I had read a rumor somewhere (not sure where), that Oakland might be willing to part with Blanton at some point down the line.
First off I doubt it would be during this season. Second, I think it only happens if Harden actually stays healthy for a stretch.
But mainly I see that they "could" deal Blanton to fix a few of their other problem areas, mainly because they'll never deal Harden (too injury prone) or Haren (too good) right now.
I do believe Blanton is arbitration eligible next year (he'll have 3+ mlb seasons), but isn't a FA until after 2010.
"If" he becomes available, I think the Tribe could be a good match for the A's.
As much as I love AsCab's potential, I think he could be a centerpiece for trading for a guy like Blanton. Am sure the A's would want more than just AsCab, but I think a good young arm (Lewis?) could be added to the deal.
I know that Oakland is unhappy with how Crosby has fallen off and Ascab could be his replacement in a short time.
Plus the deal would allow us to let CC go (I know CC is better), but a rotation in 09 with Blanton, Carmona, Westbrook, AMiller (if healthy), and Lee/Lofgren would still be very very good. What the deal would hurt would be the IF depth, forcing us to stick with Barfield.
Just thinking out loud, nothing concrete at all here. Any thoughts? [editor's note, by talonk] Per Andrew's comments, title revised
