Jim Leyand's post game comment last night was:

"If anybody thinks we're going to win anything playing and pitching like this, they're out of their minds."

Let's hope that we can extend Detriot's insanity with this series and end ours.

First I am more or less a Wedge supporter.  Still, I think this is a good opportunity to point out that the above quote might be a good example of what the average fan is looking for and not getting out of Wedge.

Leyland isn't necessarily going all Lou Pinella or acting like an idiot.  He is just confirming that he realizes the obvious.  Sometimes I think Wedge sounds as though he has his head in the sand, and doesn't realize how bad things have been lately.

Re: Game Thread: August 14, 2007
I feel the same way about Wedge, but I wish he would have chastized Peralta more for getting picked off on Sunday or do something similar to show his disgust with the way the team is playing.

I remember Leyland's comments about the Tigers after the day game with the Tribe early last season.  That team went on a tear after that, and our season was over.

I don't think Wedge needs to throw bats in the showers and call these guys a bunch of lolligagers, but I think they need some sort of kick in the pants.

(Taking the video games out of the clubhouse - or atleast cancelling the tournaments might be a start.)

Re: Game Thread: August 14, 2007
I'm sure a lot of folks would have been satisfied, and few surprised, to see Peralta publicly rebuked by Wedge.  There is another side of this, however.

Wedge called out Peralta -- publicly, repeatedly and forcefully -- last season, after months of struggle.  And Peralta without question manned up, worked his ass off, and has been more than a solid contributor all season.

No doubt Wedge appreciates and respects that -- I know I do.  And I think it may make Wedge think twice before making Peralta a public scapegoat after one mental error.  Peralta may have cost us that one game -- maybe -- but if we make the playoffs, it will be in large part because he stepped up this season.

Re: Game Thread: August 14, 2007
I don't need to see Jhonny cruxified for the move, and I know he's doing MUCH better than last season.  I'm sure that the laser eye surgery has played a part in that.  But some expression of dismay, indignation or concern would have been nice.

That was just plain bad baseball, and I wouldn't have stood for it on my 13 year old son's recreational team.  A comment like, "Jhonny's gotta keep his head in the game," would have been nice.

Wedge has always been low key, but his concept of putting the past behind us and focusing on the future brings to mind the saying that those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it.

Hopefully tweaking the lineup tonight will shake things up a bit.

But it's not necessarily that play that needs to be called out.  Just DO SOMETHING to try to shake these guys out of this funk!

I'm not asking him to take an ad out in the PD that says "Jhonny Sucks" or anything close to it.

An, "I talked to Jhonny, and he knows he has to keep his head in the game," would have done fine.

And I don't want to get too hung up on one play.

The offense is in a funk!  I started this thread with Leyland's comment about how bad the Tigers have played lately.  Wedge has taken a deciededly different tack.  I'm not sure which one works better.  What happens tonight and tomorrow may sort that out.

I just listened to the manager's show.  He stressed that the players need to comforatable and confident to break out of their slumps.  He exudes confidence in all of the players - and seems to be trying to send that message to them.

Leyland's approach is markedly different.

I know I'd rather have my kids play for a manager with Wedge's approach.

Fan's appreciate when the manager gets fired up - and motivates the team by embodying their disgust.

But fans appreciate it even more when their team wins!

Re: Game Thread: August 14, 2007
With Blake struggling like he is now, would it not make sense to only move Grady down one spot to the 2-hole and move Vic and Pronk up to 3 and 4? I guess this would give the illusion that you're somehow demoting Grady by having him and K-Love simply switch spots, but late in games I want Grady and Friends coming back to the plate as early as possible.

The one advantage I see to having Blake between Kenny and Grady is in a tight game having the option of having Casey move Lofton over into scoring position for our mashers.

by supermarioelia on Aug 14, 2007 5:07 PM EDT reply actions

Re: Game Thread: August 14, 2007
I was thinking about this when I was "working" today.  I like Casey Blake as a player, but he's probably only about the 6th best hitter in the starting lineup.  Ideally, Blake would be anchoring the bottom portion of the lineup.

That being said, it's clear that there's none of the better hitters (Garko, Peralta, Hafner, or Martinez) fit in the 2 spot better, unless Wedge decides to go with one of the radical lineup approaches that have been advocated.  Blake can hit enough, run some, is solid on the basepaths - he's OK in the 2 hole (but I HATE when he's hitting third).

Interestingly, batting Lofton first was the only reasonable alternative I could come up with to Sizemore.  Sizemore already bats a couple spots behind the bottom of the lineup guys, so there's really no difference in switching one of them up.  The question had to be then is Lofton-Blake-Sizemore better than Sizemore-Lofton-Blake?(Or Martinez).  Let's hope it's yes.

Interestingly, what is the plan against Lefties?  Is Wedge moving Sizemore to third only in a platoon-type role?  Would Michaels lead off?  Is Lofton going to play more?

by dave @ Let's Go Tribe! on Aug 14, 2007 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Re: Game Thread: August 14, 2007
Whether we've noticed or not, Blake has not been great at the plate this season.  If he were at 1B/RF and not playing a solid 3B, we'd probably be calling for his head.  Based on RC/G (runs created per 27 outs made), he's behind Michaels, Gutierrez, Nixon (!) -- pretty much everyone but Barfield.

And that's without even getting into the unfortunate RISP stats.

I can understand if you want to put one of your not-best hitters near the top for "role-based" reasons or even just to adhere to conventional expectations.  But with Lofton-Blake at the top, we're doing that with two such hitters, and it seems to me you're just giving up too much at that point.

So I say, either get Garko into that mix somehow, or just plug Victor into the two-hole and let everyone else move up a slot.  It's true that he's a GIDP threat, but with the way he makes contact and the speed of everyone in the 9-1 spots, you should be able to start the runner most of the time.

It wasn't really applicable to that atbat, but one of the reasons I like moving Grady down is that he doesn't have to take pitches just for the sake of starting the game off with a quality atbat. Too many times this season Grady has taken a few pitches to start the game, gotten down 2 strikes, and we all know how that story ends with Grady. Hopefully now he can feel free to swing at pitches he likes.

Solid play by the infield so far, very impressive.

Does anybody know how to get the STO and WTAM feeds running simultaneously on MLB.tv?  I don't think it lets you, but if anyone got that to work, that would be awesome.  I miss Hamilton's play calling.

Re: Game Thread: August 14, 2007
You can get them both going, but the key word is "simultaneously" -- the radio's always at least a pitch, maybe two pitches behind. If you're listening to Hawk Harrelson or something, it's worth it, but otherwise it gets pretty annoying. I've looked for ways to delay the video to match the radio feed, but haven't found anything.

As a Canuck I'm constantly bombarding with the theory that seeing your goon fight their goon gets the team going. Yeah this typically works for about 5 minutes. Then the team goes right back to sucking huge. They've gotta find it within themselves ultimately.

I would not be opposed to the Tribe signing Ulf Samuelsson for the explicit purpose of charging the mound on the first pitch thrown to him. Doesn't even need to hit him or anything, he just needs to stand in, take a pitch, and start a brawl.

If Bucknor is at first tonight, that means he's got the plate tomorrow, and he's the worst balls-and-strikes umpire I've ever seen.  I hope it doesn't unnerve Carmona to have his pitches called randomly, although I suppose it will be worse for Jurrjens, making his MLB debut.

"I told (Kinston manager Mike Sarbaugh) that Josh Rodriguez was going to be a better hitter than Wes Hodges," Indians defensive coordinator Ted Kubiak said. "It's still early so who knows, but it's just taken him a little longer to get going . . . Defensively, he's a little short going to his right side, but he's getting better. The power is what's surprising. It seems like he hits a home run every other day. You have to give him credit for sticking to his work after struggling for so long."

I'm really bad at breaking down mechanics, but that's an interesting observation.  I've never paid much attention to Granderson's swing, do they flow the same way or tend to have the same holes?  Sizmore has that really short, uppercut swing right?  How does Granderson look to you?

Back to reality though, Wedge may have better liked Jhonny and Gutz getting their swings in.  If Gomez gets moved over to third, it would not have surprised me to see Gutz intentionally walked to face Barfield. . . .

Gootz didn't exactly negate it, but it does remind us that the bunt play presupposes decent bat control from everyone involved.  You not only have to have a guy who knows how to bunt, but the next guy has to be able to get it out of the infield reliably.  That second skill may be even more obsolete than the first.

Yeah.........first post of the game thread (though I've been watching). What a joke though. You've got to be able to get a man in if he's on 2nd with no outs. Of course giving up 4 runs isn't exactly conducive to winning. Not really sure what to say....

I believe (please correct me if I am wrong) that we had the winning run on 2nd in the 7th, 8th, and 9th innings with less than 2 outs and scored NADA ZIP ZILCH.

I'm sorry to be the 'negative troll' type (I listened up until the 6th inning on the radio, so no access to the board), so all of the bad stuff has transpired while I've been at home.

I'm sorry folks, but this season is over for us.  Wrap it up, ship it out and get ready for next year (again).  I'm tired of everyone turning every stat into a positive spin.  Flat out, this team is not very good.  It's not managed very good and we do not deserve to be in the playoffs.  The bottom of the ninth inning was the icing on the cake for me.  Why on Earth do you not bunt in that situation is beyond me, especially with the next two hitters coming up.  Look at the bright side, at least we have Wedge here for a few more years.  What a great signing, when it should have been done after the season.  I'm sure someone will reply with a positive stat to throw in my face.

Good thing we had that day off yesterday.
An embarassment.  All the way around.

I think the saddest thing for me is how unlikable this team has become.  It's just tough to be so positive and upbeat on a squad when you can't move a guy to third.  Or better yet, have a manager that thinks he should fucking pinch-run for Garko in the 7th when you absolutely KNOW his turn will come up again, yet feels un-compelled to pinch hit for Barfield (TWICE), or for Peralta when you need to move a guy over.

Borowski, look, I'm sick of the sample size shit.  How many times are we going to bring him into a tied game when his recent track record says otherwise?  He's not the best reliever on the bench not yet in the game.  Perez is.  And after that, you could argue we should go to Lewis.

That's a very good point. But yes, pinch running in the 7th for one of the better hitters of late is a bit questionable in my mind.

The book on Barfield has to be attack, attack, attack. He has to swing at everything, even if it's close, because no one needs to waste their time with painting the corners with him. I would have thought that Cabrera could have saw an at-bat.

Re: Game Thread: August 14, 2007
JoBo has not struggled in tie games.  He has in fact been very good in tie games.

Prior to tonight, JoBo had been used in six tie games this season.  In those six games, he gave up -- wait for it -- two runs.  Six innings, six strikeouts, one walk, six hits -- no home runs.

You want to ridicule sample size, fine.  You want to believe things about a handful of innings, fine -- but sadly, JoBo had great stats in those six innings, so your theory collapses anyway.

You want obsess over a "non-save situations" stat, that's you're right, I guess.  I don't know what a tie game situation has in common with having a 4+ run lead, but maybe someone can explain it to me.

Venting... to a degree, if only to have some voice of reason call me out.  But OK, I'll bite.  All things being equal, your choice of reliever going into the bottom of the 9th was none other than Joe Borowski?

I don't know, sometimes I think you have to have a bit of feel for what a letdown of an inning that top of the 9th was.  With the Tigers chomping at the bit, and seeing cement mixer Joe coming in instead of shutdown Raffy Perez... well, if we're not going to use arguably our best reliever on the team in that situation, what are we waiting for?

And I was screaming for that as the inning started.

Re: Game Thread: August 14, 2007
Borowski, yes -- obviously.

Wedge, not so sure.

Biggest mistake I can see is not pinch-hitting for Barfield in the 7th.  I can't get behind asking Peralta to bunt if he's not that good at it -- it's just not that good of a play.  Giving up an out to get the guy from 2B to 3B, the chance of scoring goes up -- but only from 63% to 67%.

It only helps if the next batter gets the ball out of the infield.  The other team can also walk the next batter -- Gutierrez -- to put Barfield into a GIDP situation.  How's that going to turn out?

So I can get behind the bunt there, but only if you have the right personnel in place to do it.  I don't see how anyone can say that was the case here -- not just JP, but Gootz and Barfield as well.

Thoughts on tonights game:
Hafner looks hurt.
JoBo should not be allowed near a tie game.
Wedge needs to rethink his approach to in game decisions.
Peralta needs to be capable of bunting.  He is not a good enough hitter to be that deficient at bunting.
Shelton should be less than a week away from being fired.

I hate to say it, but Wedge's decisions tonight have made me wonder if he's the right man for the job. I've always supported him, but I have to question his sanity. Has he not noticed that our offense is in a slump? Why wouldn't you bunt? It's not like we're raking out there. Borowski, I blame separately. I don't blame Wedge for using him, but I wonder if he knows how much we're struggling. We have to use the best man for the job until we start winning again.

It does matter. I don't know how much JP is making but it should stipulate in his contract that, unless  he hits 40 homers and drives in 120 RBI, he should know how to bunt. He is not a super slugger that doesn't need to know how.

I don't disagree with you at all.  I do wonder what happens in the event that Asdrubal gets the job done though.  My guess, as I stated earlier, is that Gutz is intentionally walked and we're stuck with Barfield in a first and third, one out situation.  Not sure that works either . . . and that may have factored into Wedge's thinking. . . .

Wedge may have preferred 3 chances to get one hit . . . just speculation on my part, however.

I think you are really vastly overestimating the kinds of edges you're gaining here -- if any.  JP has a reasonably good chance of hitting for extra bases, and so does Gootz for that matter.  If either one does that, then the game is over -- but you expect the manager to lift a 20 HR guy so his four-day veteran can bunt?

I really don't think any big league manager does that.

I know it's a tough call to make. I'm pretty angry right now and I just wanted Wedge to do something to help us get out of this funk. I still think that bunting is the right call. Especially with Peralta being 0-8 against this guy. I just don't know anymore. I'm almost up for drawing names out of a hat to determine the lineup. Romeo Crennel advocates this method, anyway.

Re: Game Thread: August 14, 2007
I think Peralta's track record against the guy -- not so much the o-fer as the K's -- is the best argument for the bunt there, but you still have to be prepared for it to suck.

I guess the main case that I would make is that given that he's a good hitter, you can't pull Peralta in that spot just so AstroCab can bunt.

Re: Game Thread: August 14, 2007
I'm reposting this from above; I want to make sure everyone sees it.

TangoTiger published real "run frequency" data from 1999-2002, and I was using that.  That was a higher run-scoring environment than we have now, but the difference would be negligible for this particular comparison.

Re: Game Thread: August 14, 2007
WPA does use those stats, though I'm not sure over what time period.

For this sample, we're talking about almost 10,000 games, so the particular players involved would have to average out.  I will try to find stats specific to 9th + extras, which might be a little different.

There can be little doubt that the particular players involved affect the probabilities significantly.  If Lofton is up, he bunts -- not just because he knows how, but also because he might not give up an out in the process.

Re-read my post.

Even if AstroCab bunts successfully, it's not a good situation for us.  Gutierrez -- four-time minor league K champ -- isn't the best guy to get the ball out of the infield, plus they can just walk him to set up Barfield for the GIDP.

Re: Game Thread: August 14, 2007
Here's where overreactions are unnecessary tonight:

  • We had a PECOTA-adjusted 56.9% chance to make the playoffs coming into tonight. With tonight's loss, we don't drop to 0%. We're only one game out.
  • With a current 65-54 record, and 33 games left to play, a .500 record gets us to a 81.5-70.5 record. On average, it takes 90.8 wins to win the AL Central. If we finish 91-71, we only have to win 6 out of every 10 games (.605 winning percentage). We can achieve this.
  • With tonight's loss, that puts us nearly identical to what our expected W-L record should be. The Tigers are right around theirs too. So it's not like we're trying to overcome a vastly better team, Pythagenport-speaking that is.

But, of course, things need to be improved to achieve a playoff berth at this point... such as:

Let's talk strikeouts.

  • Since the All-Star Break: 255 Ks, 31 GP, 8.22 avg K/GP
  • During a 33-19 April+May: 396 Ks, 52 GP, 7.61 avg K/GP
  • From June up until the ASG Break, with a 19-17 record: 259 Ks, 36 GP, 7.19 avg K/GP
How about bases on balls?
  • Since the All-Star Break: 102 BBs, 3.29 avg BB/GP
  • During a 33-19 April+May: 234 BBs, 4.50 avg BB/GP
  • From June up until the ASG Break, with a 19-17 record: 130 BBs, 3.61 avg BB/GP
That puts our OPS at...
  • Since the All-Star Break: .698
  • During a 33-19 April+May: .804
  • From June up until the ASG Break, with a 19-17 record: .772

I wouldn't say we're dive bombing into the ground, but I don't think I can quite put my finger on what the offensive problem is. No, it's not that "these guys just don't want it"... because who in the MLB doesn't want to win? Not sure if it's mechanics, as I haven't been able to view an Indians game all year. But that stats aren't really telling a great difference, other than things like OPS are declining as we move on. But I don't think I see it as something alarmingly negative, just cooling off after a hot start out of the gate.

Listen kids, we're playing the kind of baseball we expected in the beginning of the year (xW-L wise that is). We're one game out of first place in the Central. The sky isn't falling yet. Relax. It's August. Listen to Wedge's press conference. He's been hitting the nail on the head in every question tonight.

If he is, well, he might need to go see a psychologist or a kinesiologist or a Scientologist or something. Maybe it's just me, but I just can't see grown men/MLB players/rational thinkers going up to the plate and completing their own negative self-fulfilling prophecies.

I think he's being more nuanced than that. Re: Game Thread: August 14, 2007
Yeah, but hitters are only expected to get on base once out of every three at-bats... even if you're slumping, you gotta think you can get on eventually. Again, a disclaimer: I am not a MLB hitter, in fact, I've never even gotten out of eighth-grade baseball. So, perhaps I'm missing something, but I don't think you can will yourself into a hit. You can go up there, however, think you'll do poorly, and then do so... but who'd want to have that mindset?

Re: Game Thread: August 14, 2007
It's not exactly a mindset. It's like having that feeling that you won't get on...just because. It's a depressing feeling and you try to do whatever you can to get a hit. You start thinking about irrational things like jinxes, different bats, predetermining a pitch to swing at, etc. What he should be doing is getting back to the basics and trying to stay positive. I just think that's impossible with the team doing so badly right now. All it takes is one good game, however.

He's been in this slump so long that he expects to fail. That and the FO bringing in Gomez and calling up AstroCab. It has to just kill his confidence.

Re: Game Thread: August 14, 2007
Time to vent...this is just unbelievable to watch. After three weeks of the worst offense in the Jacobs Field era, this team takes a day off and then puts together some of the worst AB's I've seen during this stretch. THREE guys hit the ball the to the opposite field (maybe there were more in the 10th, I didn't watch), and one was in just his second game in a Tribe uni. Martinez was awful. Peralta was brutal. So was Barf. Seems like everyone is looking for a fastball to drive, and that's it. Fourteen more K's.

Hafner is really hurting...I don't know if you try to have him play through it or not. Give him credit, he still took some decent swings. But did you see where Granderson was playing him before he made that great catch? That's where you play slap-hitting singles hitters...sadly, that's what he's been for much of the past three months.

Peralta is much closer to 2006 than 2005. Behind virtually every fastball and out in front of virtually every offspeed pitch. I don't know how you can hit like that.

I didn't really have a problem with not bunting in the 9th...Gutz K's a lot against righties, so it's not like it was automatic that he would get him in.

Sadly, I just can't watch anymore of this until they start having better at-bats, if that ever happens. For the first time since the last day of the 2005 season, I won't make an attempt to watch at least part of Wednesday's game.  I'll check scores, watch highlights, etc. But I can't handle watching this stunning and total complete offensive collapse for now. I just can't.

Re: Game Thread: August 14, 2007
Brutal, just brutal.  I'm feeling like I did during the final White Sox series in '05.  Can't they win anything?

Three straight losses to the Yankee's and we throw our ace up against a pitcher in a funk and still can't manage more than 2 runs?

Sorry, but these guys just don't belong in the playoffs.

LeBron must GO!

Re: Game Thread: August 14, 2007
It was great to see a (nearly) packed house last night. Granderson catching that fly ball was just a punch to the gut to crowd, you could audibly hear the air let out of us. It seemed improbable that he could make up the distance on that last 6 feet ... some of the people attending were already celebrating the win as the ball descended.

Sure would have been nice having Gomez playing for Barfield last night.

Today's Irrational Positivity Fact:

A win tonight and we're still tied for the division lead, and no worse than 2 back of the wildcard leaders.

Re: Game Thread: August 14, 2007
Just listened to the postgame interview last night and I think Wedge is talking to Hafner when he addresses toughness.  Just a hunch but it sounds like he feels that Hafner is feeling pressure and feeling sorry for himself.

Re: Game Thread: August 14, 2007
he implied he felt several guys were feeling sorry for themselves

will it be reflected in who gets benched tonight or will he give them 1 more chance?
