Lofton Leading Off!
http://blog.cleveland.com/sports/2007/08/lofton_takes_over_leadoff_spot.html
Should be interesting to see if this continued tinkering with the lineup leads to more runs or more of the same.
Although not the biggest Wedge fan, I do appreciate the fact that he is willing to explore all the options (although sometimes he is slow to react to the problems at hand). I am certainly looking forward to seeing how the team reacts to this tonight.

Re: Lofton Leading Off!
You might get burned for that one. I worry a lot more about what Grady hasn't been doing when he DOES hit the ball, but I've never really understood the argument about strikeouts from a run-probability perspective.
I think, in any event, this move has a lot more to do with a scouting report on the opposing pitcher than it does with Grady's K rate.

Re: Lofton Leading Off!
I think more generally, I don't know why we'd want Lofton and Blake 1-2 when that pushes Garko down to 6th, Peralta to 7th. I get that they see a lot of pitches, but it seems to me there must be a limit on how valuable it is to have that guy batting in the first inning. Wedge almost acts like it's the whole ballgame.

Re: Lofton Leading Off!
I also think that it may help him mentally, because people will lay off him for striking out so much. He won't be chastised for being a leadoff K machine.

Re: Lofton Leading Off!
Seriously, though, I don't have a problem with Lofton leading off (I realize it's easy after it creates the only runs the night before). I do think we need a different #2 hitter, but I'm not sure who fits best there.

Re: Lofton Leading Off!
I mean, he's not unbelievable. Somewhere between an .800 and .900 OPS certainly seems reasonable for him at this point. A middle of the road, maybe slightly better, starting first baseman.

Re: Lofton Leading Off!
I did a little post a few months ago about how lousy his walk rate was, cautioning that his early numbers looked kind of flukey, and that he was likely to struggle if he didn't get more selective. He did struggle for a while, but he responded by getting a lot more selective.
His second-half walk rate is double the first-half, and in part because of that, his second-half numbers are just outstanding -- 1012 OPS, and even if you BABIP-normalize it, it's still 915 -- and it's not clear a full BIP regression is really appropriate for him.
Anyway, it's only 112 PA, but he's been really, really good, and unlike April-May, there's nothing all that flukey about it. It would be great to have a 900-plus hitter on the team that was more of a contact hitter. Not so much a power hitter as a "hard contact" hitter.
He also leads the league in HBP with 15.

Another benefit of being chunky - they have more meat on their bones and they're not afraid of being hit. : )

Re: Lofton Leading Off!
I would think Cabrera and Gomez may start playing side by side and not platooning.
He need to figure who to drop on August 25 when he needs a 5th starter.
