Interesting lineup. Gutz in the 2 spot, Gomez at 3B hitting 8th and Droobs getting the start at 2B. I like it.

Wedge eventually comes up with a starting lineup we like, given the number of different lineups he has tried.  Even with all that tinkering, it still seems like he is excessively cautious.

Salaries aside, which player would you want to have around for the next 6 seasons, Alfonso Soriano or Gutierrez?

Re: Game Thread: August 19, 2007
I don't know how you can say salaries aside. But, I still think I might go with Gutz either way.

Re: Game Thread: August 19, 2007
a dull and silly way of illustrating my Gutz favoritism.
It's a provocative comp, but the two players have quite a bit in common outside of reputation and salary.

Wedge says he would love to keep 5 on the bench if he can swing it.  So it's not a done deal that a position player will be sent down/dropped when Lee (most likely) is added Saturday.

A guess a lot will depend on how the pitching goes this week.  They won't have a choice if the bullpen has been stressed -- or if it gets stressed a few days later.

My only concern with Gutz in the 2-hole is his K-tendency with Shields on the mound. He didn't strike out, and thus I am pleased.

OK  Go to this web site.

http://myp2p.eu/index.htm

Download the Sopcast player.

The first page gives you a choice of sports you can watch.  Click on MLB and you'll see a list of games available.  Click on play for the game and it might takea while, but the player will come up and will show the Indians game from Channel 3.

It's free and I watched the Browns game last night.  Sometimes the feed freezes up but have patience, it'll come back.

The picture isn't the greatest but it's better than nothing.

Re: Game Thread: August 19, 2007
I have a question.  Watching the Lofton AB, Reyes held the ball on the mound, waiting for the batter to call timeout, to throw off the timing of Cabrera.  After the fiasco with Betancourt earlier this year, why isn't that an automatic ball?  Its a relatively common situation in baseball, so why isn't that a ball after 12 seconds?  I'm not trying to be smart here, I'm just wondering what the difference is, because he was clearly past 12 seconds in at least two pitches when he was trying to keep Cabrera close...

Re: Game Thread: August 19, 2007
I wouldn't say he's having an excellent year, but the conventional defensive stats don't tell you much about a player's performance.  He's misplayed a bunch of balls that should have been handled by the 2B.  But he's done a fine job and, as you note, has committed very few errors.  Not really surprising as a converted catcher -- he must have good hands.

by Jay on Aug 19, 2007 5:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Re: Game Thread: August 19, 2007
Here is a ranking of all qualified 1B in the majors in Revised Zone Rating, a much better defensive stat than fielding percentage.  Garko is 10th out of 22, so he's about middle of the pack.  As you said, not too bad for a converted catcher.

By the way, Pujols is first.  I hear he's a pretty decent hitter, too.

Darn Borowski!
Hello everyone,

Disappointing loss and another game we gave away, or should I say, Borowski gave away - 2 outs, bottom of the 9th, the #9 hitter who was  hitting .204 coming into today's game, who was 0 for his last 8 and 1 for his last 12, and who hasn't hit .250 since he came over to TB in 2006, and Borowski walks him.  Ugh!

Of course, the offense should have done more, especially against that Devil Rays' bullpen.

It would have been really nice to go into Detroit up 2.5 games; 1.5 is not bad, but it still stings to know we should have been up 2.5.

Somehow, someway, this offense must be more consistent.  Borowski needs to "stop making mountains out of molehills" out of saves so often either because, every so often, like today, it comes back to bite you, and at this point of the season, you can't keep giving away games you should be winning - it could mean the difference between playing in October and staying home in October.

Let's hope the offense can find itself in Detroit and we can win the series (or more) beginning Tuesday.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Go Tribe! :-)

Re: Game Thread: August 19, 2007
i'm going outside the box on this one.  this is on CC and that meatball he served up to pena.

by Brick. on Aug 19, 2007 5:51 PM EDT reply actions

CC did no worse than Santana, who has given
up a few solo shots in some of his starts, and nothing else, and those are usually considered solid to very solid starts.  Besides, Pena does have power, as does Upton - it's not like he gave up a HR or walked the weak-hitting Dioner Navarro like Borowski did.

The offense & Borowski were the biggest culprits, with Borowski being the biggest one in my book because of the way he gave up that run - 2 outs, walks the #9 hitter, who isn't a strong hitter, then giving up two straight hits.

Borowski doesn't walk Navarro, and he shouldn't, we likely win this game.  That's why he's the #1 cause for the loss in my book - a closer is supposed to save these types of games, and while he's done it for the most part, the way he lost it today is pretty much inexcusable and heart-breaking for a playoff-contending team, especially when we could have gained another game on the Tigers and lost more ground to the M's and Yankees.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Re: Game Thread: August 19, 2007

Has the Indians grit disappeared again?

by palcal on Aug 19, 2007 6:42 PM EDT reply actions

Let's hope not, but that's why we've got to stop
losing games like this that we should win, something we've done too much of lately, either due to weak offensive outputs, weak relief pitching (especially from Borowski's meltdowns,) or both.  It stops the Indians from building some real momentum and getting into one of those tears where you win 5-6 in a row, 7-9 out of 10, etc.

A streak like that would help us put some distance between us and the Tigers, especially with how they have played of late (hopefully, that continues.)  Then, we wouldn't have to worry about the M's and Yankees, while the Tigers would.

Come on Indians - start playing your "A" game from here on out; we really haven't seen that consistent "A" game since May in my opinion.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Re: Game Thread: August 19, 2007
I'm not sure how much I agree with the Wickman comparisons.  Aside from the fact that both of them seem to always put runners on base and it is agonizing to watch them struggle for the last out, i think Wick was a lot better.
I haven't looked at their numbers, but just from observation it seems to me that Wickman was better at getting outs.  When he would put runners on base it was from a lot of infield hits or bloopers.  Those always indicated to me that he made his pitch, but either did it too well (IF hits from balls that get pounded too hard into the ground) or just had some bad luck (bloops).  Borowski appears to get hit harder, letting batters get better swings on the ball.
Again, this is a more cosmetic observation, but give me Wickman over Borowski any day.

Sorry, I'm with palcal on this.  We had three excellent starts but only one quality offensive performance and one quality bullpen performance.

Given even an average performance from either the offense or the bullpen, we'd have totally crushed the Rays this weekend.

Re: Game Thread: August 19, 2007
I could see getting held down by Shields, who has been fairly solid all season, but it looks like we picked the wrong time to go up against Edwin Jackson (who has pitched more to his potential his last 4 starts.)

However, walking a #9 hitter (.205 no less) in any situation is unforgivable in my book.

Re: Game Thread: August 19, 2007
Although the Devil Rays always seem to play better than their record would indicate, giving good teams real trouble, we could have (and should have) taken all three this weekend.

The Yankees got back into the playoff race by beating the crap out of bad teams.  That's what good teams do.  You can only play the teams on your schedule, but you have to make the most out of the games you play.

We won the series, and that's always important, particularly on the road, but we should have won all three games - and with a 'reasonable' performance from either the offense or the bullpen on Sunday, we would have.

I agree with those who said we should have won all 3 - we gave this game away against the D'Rays, by most accounts, a bad team, and in the race we're in, we can't afford to give up games like this.

2/3 is satisfying/good when you are legitimately beat in 1/3 games, but when you give the game away when your closer walks the weak #9 hitter with 2 outs in the 10th, then gives up back-to-back hits after you fought hard to scratch out a run in the 10th, 2/3 is NOT as satisfying/good, and chances are, the Indians probably feel like they should have taken 3/3.

In addition, 2/3 isn't as satisfying/good because the Indians' offense could/should have done more damage against Shields, who's not the same caliber of pitcher CC is at this point, and certainly should have scored more against the D'Rays bullpen, arguably the worst or one of the worst in baseball.

Unfortunately, we can't rewrite the past; we just have to take out our frustration on the Tigers - but when you have a great chance to sweep, you need to complete it - no more giveaways - we've been too generous in that department lately, and that won't help us, neither in maintaining the AL Central lead or trying to get the highest seed we can for home-field advantage, as we are within striking distance of both the #1 and #2 seeds.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Go Tribe! :-)
