Cancelled Games this weekend

Just an FYI, havent seen anyone post this so far in regards to the bridge collapse affecting this weekend's series in the Metrodome. From the Star-Tribue in Minny "No decisions have been made about the four-game series with Cleveland, which is scheduled to begin Friday, but today's scheduled groundbreaking ceremony for the new Twins ballpark also was postponed indefinitely." Re: Cancelled Games this weekend
Obviously, this supercedes any concerns about baseball.

However, if I can look through the lens of the Cleveland Indians for a second, what a weird and difficult season this is becoming.

Re: Cancelled Games this weekend
I agree, this is infinitely more important than trying to get that next series in.  I can see why the games would be canceled with the emotional and logistical strains the city is going through right now.

Re: Cancelled Games this weekend
What, exactly, is infinitely more important?

I understand why today's game was cancelled.  There is a sense of shock, I'm sure, and probably some very difficult practical decisions to be made regarding the infrastructure.  But at a certain point, and sooner rather than later, continuing with public events becomes a positive part of dealing with the tragedy rather than a negative thing.

Re: Cancelled Games this weekend
I agree, but I was referring to the immediate future.  I'm not sure exactly where the accident happened in relation to Minneapolis, but if it's nearby it's probably putting quite a strain on the highways, cops, etc.  It would probably be pretty difficult to have 30,000+ people work around that kind of mess going to and from a game each night.

But yeah, baseball could certainly help out some of the people up there right now as far as something positive to turn to.

Re: Cancelled Games this weekend
I'm still in Cleveland, heading back to Minneapolis tonight.  But what I can tell you is that the collapsed 35W Bridge leads right into downtown Minneapolis and is just blocks from the Metrodome.  True, there are other ways to get downtown (e.g., I-94), but this is sure to create a real traffic nightmare for some time to come.

In fact, for many traveling from northern suburbs and even parts of St. Paul, 35W is the most efficient way to head to a Twins game.  For those coming from the south, they would not be as affected.  Nevertheless, and just from a pure logistical standpoint, I'm certain this is creating a traffic nightmare.

Re: Cancelled Games this weekend
Mplswahoo is right--35W is THE major north-south artery in Minneapolis, and the collapsed bridge is right by the Metrodome.  I'm guessing we'll see much lower attendance for these games than usual.

It was very weird here in the Twin Cities yesterday, seeing a bridge that I've driven across thousands of times--an integral part of everyday life, but so mundane as to be invisible--suddenly transformed into a scene out of a disaster movie.  There was a distinct feeling of unreality about it all.

I am OK (I was still at work) and I hope everyone else in the area connected with LGT, as well as their friends and loved ones, are safe and sound also.

Re: Cancelled Games this weekend
Series with Twins will be played as scheduled (per Twins).  Of course, Santana is now pitching in it.

Re: Cancelled Games this weekend
No doubt the Twins engineered the bridge collapse purposely, just so they could have Santana face the Indians.  Jeez.

Facing Santana could be a positive in one sense!
Hello everyone,

While facing Santana wasn't the original plan before the I-35W collapse, facing him would give us a taste of playoff baseball, as these are moreless the types of pitchers we'll be facing in the postseason, and in a similar situation where every win and loss is magnified, due to the fact that the AL Central and WC races are so tight.  Therefore, in one way, it might be a positive - if we're going to reach the postseason and proceed in it, we need to hone our game against this type of pitcher.

Plus, our ace is countering him, just like he would in Game 1 of a 5- or 7-game series, so this should give us good experience.

Besides that, two other factors should be noted:

  1. I don't know if Santana can get much better than he did his last time out, so that might also be a positive.  And with CC going, and seemingingly back on track, that may be enough to eke out a victory.

  2. You have to wonder what Santana's mindset is after his outburst the other day; while I'm not saying he'll totally collapse or not try his hardest, I wonder if it will be enough to throw him off just enough for us to score 3-5 runs off of him; if CC can deliver like he has his last few starts, that may be enough to beat him.

And, we've beaten him twice before this year, with Carmona pitching, so it's certainly doable.  Now, we just have to go out there and do it, and that's by playing our best ball (little ball and big ball mixed with good fundamentals - any way to scratch out runs against Santana and their bullpen.)

Hopefully, facing Santana will turn into a positive stretch for us because we'll have to really focus and execute in order to win - maybe this will get us into the hot streak we've been waiting for.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Go Tribe! :-)
