Re: Game Thread: August 21, 2007
what exactly does blake hitting 2nd do for this lineup?  i think the better lineup is: Lofton, Grady, Vic, Garko, Hafner, Peralta, Gutz/Nixon/Blake hitting 7-8, Cabrera
But what do I know.  I just look at the move of Sizemore to 3rd while keeping Blake 2nd as a way of taking at bats away from Grady and giving them to Casey

Barf's indefinitely benched, with Gomez and Droob getting his starts. Dunno how long that's going to keep up, though.

Re: Game Thread: August 21, 2007
yeah I totally agree with letting AstroCab play a lot after seeing how he's played so far. But, are they just giving up on Barf now? Maybe he's the guy who is getting shipped out when we need a 5th starter.

Re: Game Thread: August 21, 2007
2B-men are a weak lot, probably the weakest hitters by position these days, but Barf's hitting declined to a level where I think Rouse might very well be his equal given similar chances.  I can't believe how bad he was.  AstroCab seems like a good bet to at match or improve upon Barfield's showing, and his glove is superior to Josh's as well.

I don't know what to make of Barfield just yet.  I find his collapse and pending demotion to be the most surprising event of this season.

by homelytourist on Aug 21, 2007 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Re: Game Thread: August 21, 2007
How soon we forget how bad Rouse was.  As bad as Barfield was, and as small as the sample was for Rouse, it nonetheless is highly unlikely that Rouse could outhit Barfield.  You might want to take a look at their prior track records if you doubt this.  There's no reason to think Rouse will ever do what Barfield did post-Break in 2006.

Also!  Barfield's benching, like Marte's demotion, is more opportunistic than anything.  If AstroCab had not made himself an option, I expect Josh would be sharing starts with Gomez.

by Jay on Aug 21, 2007 6:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Re: Game Thread: August 21, 2007
Ok, similar adjectives apply to both Rouse and Barfield but the numbers do seperate them a little.

Let's see, Josh:
K rate up.  ISO discipline and power (!) down. The trendline looks a lot like Kaz Matsui's, albeit without the league change.

The lynchpin is plate discipline.  If he restores what he's back in business as a league average 2B.  Tony Womack with fewer SB.

Not sure wht a RHH like Barfield would share starts with a RHH like Gomez, but I'll take your word for it.

i think it might just be that they played ONE 6 week stretch of phenomenal baseball at the end of 2005, and the team we've seen in the 290 or so games since then is the real one.  the end of 05 might not have been a harbinger, but an outlier.

OK, the scary part is what if this team continues to be inconsistent and overrated offensively? My point is, we're stuck with it the next few years, unless they figure things out.

Now obviously they're not this bad. They're not going to play 162 games and score 2 runs or less in over half of them. But when you struggle as long as this group has lately, it's not a slump. It's something more. Is it something inherent within these players? Are the strikeouts an indicator of having a bunch of guys that can be pitched to, thus making them prone to inconsistency?

Re: Game Thread: August 21, 2007
Fair enough, but it's sort of Baseball 101 that as a hitter you expand your strike zone with two strikes.  In a one-run game of this magnitude, that was a pitch that needs to be fouled off at the very least.

Kenny complains so frequently that outside of trusting your own eyes, it's hard to know when his beef is legitimate.

What I find disappointing is that I think this was the matchup that most favored us by far.  With the way the sticks have been, now you feel like you need a break to avoid a sweep.

Re: Game Thread: August 21, 2007
I agree with you about the matchup. I thought this was a pivotal game going in. Hopefully it is in a good way and it affects the players to get out of this funk.

But the pitch - that is a Kenny move, to play the ump and buckle back to influence the call, and to me it seemed he did - the ump called it a strike.

Exactly - and how come no one challenged it?
Not Wedge, not the coaching staff, and not the players.  Did NO ONE see that play?  I can't believe that.

And who knows if Guillen still hits the HR if Ordonez's hit is a 2B, not a HR, as Manning and Underwood speculated that maybe Carmona was upset over Ordonez's HR that he made that mistake pitch to Guillen.

It's just mind-boggling to see this offense fall apart as it has, to remain in that state, and to essentially sabotage the great pitching we've been getting, especially from Sabathia and Carmona.  Those two should have been virtual locks to win 20 games.  Chances are, neither will win 20 now, unless this offense scores at least 4-5 runs in every one of their starts from here on out, and somehow, I doubt they'll do that (I'd love it if they'd prove me wrong.)

Just my 2 cents.

Hello fwembt,

If you're looking at it from the standpoint of looking back on the season schedule and results, then yes, I'd agree.  However, playing and losing to your closest rival does have a bit more significance in a pennant race because, you can control your own destiny defeating them and lose control of your own destiny by losing to them.

Winning and losing to KC or TB doesn't have the same effect - you don't control or lose control of your own destiny with wins or losses against them because you still have to factor in what the Tigers did on the same night.  That's why I think these games against the Tigers do take on more significance.  Yes, they may only count as 1 win or 1 loss in the standings when you look at the season schedule, but in reality and in my opinion, they do count for more because you still have control over what happens because you are facing your direct competitor head-on.  You win, you automatically improve your standing; you lose, you automatically worsen your standing, without factoring in any other games.

Just my 2 cents.

Go Tribe! :-)

I'm getting tired of seeing this putrid offense
waste solid to great pitching performances night after night, against guys they should be doing a lot more damage against.

Hello everyone,

Another frustrating, disgusting, putrid loss.

In Carmona's last 8 starts, he's 4-4 with a 1.80 ERA.

I didn't hear exactly Sabathia's record of late, but I think it was something like 1-2 with a 2.11 ERA.

In the last 26 games (since July 23 vs. Boston,) the Indians have scored 2 runs or less 14 times in 26 games.  That's 53.8%!

If this offense doesn't pick it up soon, we WON'T reach the postseason.  It'll be like 2000 and 2005 all over again.

And, I'm starting to wonder, which offense is the real deal and which is the fluke?  The offense that scored

5.23 runs/game in April and
6.00 runs/game in May

OR

4.86 runs/game in June
4.65 runs/game in July
3.44 runs/game in August

I'm starting to think the latter is more reminiscient of this offense's true ability, sorry to say.  As I've said before, this offense has struggled for 2.5 months, not just for a few weeks, which is why I don't think this is the type of slump that most teams endure - most teams would have broken out of this by now, unless, this offense isn't as good as we originally thought it was.

Again, we can't score without the HR ball, which is NOT a good habit to get into.  The HR should be part of the offensive arsenal, not the whole arsenal.

And Jair Jurrjens?!  The one with these AA stats?

7-5, 3.20 ERA, 19 G, 19 GS, 1 CG, 1 SHO, 112.2 IP, 112 H, 43 R, 40 ER, 7 HR, 31 BB, 94 K, 9 WP, 1 BK

8.95 H/9 IP
0.56 HR/9 IP
2.48 BB/9 IP
7.51 K/9 IP
1.27 WHIP

That is reminiscient of a guy who should be shutting down a ML offense to 1 run?  I'm sorry, but just about any competent ML offense should be able to score 3-4 runs off this guy on most occasions.  Right now, our offense is anything but competent.

One final thing:  Why didn't Wedge and company challenge Ordonez's HR?  I doubt that ball gets out.  Maybe Guillen still hits the HR and it's still 2-0, but still, what does it say about a team's coaching staff when no one suggests challenging that questionable HR call?  Even the players - no one suggested it.  Are these guys paying attention or not?

I'm sorry for the long post, but obviously, this is extremely frustrating.  If this team fails to get to the postseason in 2007, I think some serious questions will come up about these players, Wedge, and the coaching staff in regards to being able to deliver when it comes crunch time.  They failed in 2005, they failed in 2006 when they were expected to contend, and right now, their grip on controlling their own destiny is slipping.

Is this team as good as we really think it is or did this team overachieve the first two months of the year and we're seeing our "real" team now?  Great frontline pitching, very poor fundamental hitting, and very poor fundamental play (Lofton's baserunning gaffe.)

Just my 2 cents.

Go Tribe! :-)

by GermanysTribeFan on Aug 21, 2007 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions

It scares me too!
And while Kevin Keane is controversial, he's bringing up a good point about whether this team "plays too tight":

August of 2004 - falters after tying the Twins for the division lead.
Last week of 2005 - plays so poorly that an almost locked up playoff spot is lost.
First half of 2006 - get off to such a poor start that we fall out of the race by the trading deadline when we were expected to contend.
June-August 2007 - the offense suffers a catastrophic meltdown, going from 5-6 runs a game, down to under 3.5 runs/game in August.

It makes me wonder - will this team ever be able to deliver in crunch time?  Keane keeps saying that this team is too tight.  I agree with that, and also with the idea that this teams needs to be looser, have fun, and enjoy the game.

What will allow them to do this?  Without ripping Wedge, I keep wondering, can this team relax with Wedge and this coaching staff and perform up to their expected capabilities or will we keep doing this season after season as we have from 2004-2006, and unfortunately, are on that path again in 2007?  Can Wedge and company get this team to relax and perform under pressure when it's all on the line, or will they keep falling short, whether it's due to poor hitting, poor pitching, poor fundamental play, etc.?

And, yes, we're still in first place, but the season doesn't end for over another month.  Will we be in first place then?  That's the only question that really matters, not where we're at right now.  And with the way this team has been playing for the last 2.5 months, I'm anything but confident at this point that we will make the postseason, regardless of having a .5 game lead right now.

They have the chance and the ability to turn it around and make the postseason.  The question is, will they?

Just my 2 cents.

Go Tribe! :-)

Re: It scares me too!
That analysis is so all over the board (Keane's) that any bad stretch the team has qualifies as 'playing too tight.'

by emd2k3 on Aug 21, 2007 10:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree that Keane's analysis is often off the
mark, but in this case, I'm not sure I can dismiss it.

Hello emd2k3,

The reason I say that is because, he says he knows how hard the guys work, so they do care, even though the results might lead some people to think that they don't (and some of Keane's callers have come to that conclusion,) which is why he's thinking that they're playing too tight.

The reason why I think there might be some truth to that is the track record over the last 4+ seasons, as I stated in my other post.  Not once have the Indians come through in crunch time and made it to the postseason, even when the odds were in their favor (i.e. 2005.)

Plus, like I've hinted elsewhere, how many teams show that type of offensive output (5-6 runs/game) over the first few months of the season, then totally tank the next 2.5 months without some key injuries to main offensive performers?  The only one who's really underperformed all season is Pronk, and yet, the Indians were averaging 6.00 runs/game in May WITHOUT Hafner's normal production (.228/.394/.455,) so the Indians showed it CAN be done, yet, they haven't come close to that production since.

I think we all know they care, but I do have to consider Keane's reasoning and think, maybe there is something to that.  Like I said before, this slump doesn't strike me as your "normal, every-ballclub-goes-through-this type of slump," which is why I don't think his idea of the Indians playing "too tight" is far-fetched.

Is there another explanation that explains what the Indians' offense is going through?  I don't buy the "every-offense-goes-through-this-type-of-slump" - this offense has too many established players who have performed before to be totally inept for 2.5 months - they're making virtually every pitcher look like Johan Santana, even inexperienced pitchers like James Shields and Jair Jurrjens.  To me, that's more than your "normal, down-time" slump.  Keane's explanation makes some sense, and one I could see being a real possibility.

If that is the case, how can that be fixed?  That's the $64,000 question in my mind.

Just my 2 cents.

Go Tribe! :-)

The connecting thread that I read about (in the PD of all places [!]) is that the Injuns do not win once expectations become high. I agree, although they did much better the first half of this year.

I think Wedge is trying to keep morale up, but
like Kevin Keane mentioned, even he's trying to figure out how to handle the pressure of the pennant race.  Keane's not sure Wedge knows how to relax, which might help to explain why this team always seems to "play tight" anytime they are expected to contend or in contention, just like they are now.

And, mind you, I don't agree with Keane very often, but in this case, his reasoning makes sense to me.  I just wish, somehow, this team would start playing loose, having fun, and letting their natural ability take over - I don't think it would lead to them playing any worse than they are playing right now, and quite possibly, could lead to an improvement in their play.

Just my 2 cents.

homelytourist - I know Keane promotes some beer (can't remember if it's Pabst or Miller,) so that wouldn't be totally out of the question, but I still think his reasoning makes more sense than usual, or at least, provides an alternative explanation to what is going on with the Indians' underwhelming and underperforming offense that has been present for the last 2.5 months.

Hello homelytourist,

Regarding the Indians' deep slump/drought, etc., I'm not sure really anyone understands it; we're all trying to make sense of it (Wedge included) and wondering if the Indians will ever break out of this offensive slump.  They're fortunate they still have a chance to make the postseason, despite their struggles.  Let's just hope they take advantage of it, beginning tomorrow.

Just my 2 cents.

Just got back from Detroit. A disappointing game----and a somewhat longer drive home because of it----but as per usual after one of these losses, reports of the Indians demise have been greatly exaggerated. So long as we keep getting this kind of pitching, we'll be in every game we play----even with the sleepy kitten offense. Of course, who knows how long that'll hold up, but you never know. The way we've been playing the last week or two, we'll probably tattoo Verlander tomorrow and pick up the win.

I hope you're right about tattooing Verlander!
Nothing about the offense is making much sense right now, so crushing Verlander as few, if any, would expect us to do, would fit right in with the way the offense has been mystifying us lately.

Not to pile on here, but this whole business about plate discipline was all too evident tonight.

Of our 30 plate appearances, 18 saw 3 or fewer pitches. In contrast, the only guys who got on base saw 4 or more pitches. I know it's a moronic statement but I couldn't help it.

Re: Game Thread: August 21, 2007
It's not just that, though.  It's also a significant reassessment of how good this team really is.  We thought we had a team that could threaten 100 wins, probably get to 95 and definitely over 90.

Regardless of the aggregate record (or cumulative first-place status), the team right now is coming off 2-3 months at or below .500, depending on where you want to contrive the line.  If we make it in, we're going to sneak in.

This might be lunatic, but from a fan's perspective, there is a benefit to getting swept by the Tigers this week.  It would put us in a position where we can only make the playoffs by getting hot, not by proving our team was (barely) the least incompetent in the second half.

Worst months of AL team batting this season, by OPS:

  1. Twins, August
  2. A's, April
  3. White Sox, June
  4. White Sox, May
  5. Indians, August
  6. A's, July
  7. Rangers, July
  8. D-Rays, August
  9. Rangers, August
  10. Mariners, July
  11. White Sox, April
  12. Royals, August
  13. Royals, April
  14. Royals, May
  15. Twins, June

Notably missing from this list:  every other contender except the Mariners, who were never an offensive force to begin with.  It is tempting to say this is no different than the Yankees' struggles early in the season, but the Yankees' worst month by OPS was 768, back in April, which is order of magnitude different from 676.

We have dropped from 792 in the first half -- clearly in the top group of offensive teams -- to 700 in the second half -- clearly in the lowest group.  That's a team-wide drop, meaning that each individual hitter has dropped 92 points, as an average.  It is remarkable.  It ought to be enough at least to spook even the most chiseled stat-minded skeptic.

by SpringTrainingFun on Aug 22, 2007 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I think we ALL want the Indians to beat the crap
out of the Tigers.

Hello SpringTrainingFun,

I think Jay's main point is that if we get swept by the Tigers, the only real way the Indians will make the postseason is if we get hot and start playing like we did the first two months of this season.

While you can make an argument that if the Indians make the postseason, they'll turn it on and be fine, at the rate this team is playing over the last 2.5 months, can we be even somewhat confident that would happen?  I can't say I'm even somewhat confident that this team will be a force in the postseason if we reach there, even with Sabathia and Carmona, with the way we've been playing offensively over the last 2.5 months.

That's what Jay is saying - if we don't start playing better, we won't reach the postseason, and who really wants to back into the postseason, only to get totally rocked and knocked out, and with the way we're playing right now, we wouldn't last long into the postseason, even with Sabathia and Carmona.

I'm not sure the Tigers will be that pathetic where we could back into the postseason even if we don't get swept, but at the rate we're playing right now, I don't see how we can be a postseason force; we can't win great games pitched by Sabathia and Carmona now - why should we think that all of a sudden this team is going to figure out how to hit and score when they haven't been handling the pressure of a pennant race this season or in past seasons?  The postseason is just more of a pressure cooker, which signifies to me that this team might play even more tight, and thereby, struggle more offensively, and we can't win games now with our weak offense.

Therefore, I think Jay's main point is this: If we don't turn the offense around now, we have NO business in the postseason; the Indians need to hit to get there - if we don't, then we don't deserve to be there because we likely won't do anything even if we did get there.  If you can't score, you can't win, no matter how good your pitching is, and lately, scoring runs is like pulling teeth for our offense.

Just my 2 cents.

Go Tribe! :-)

Re: Game Thread: August 21, 2007
Its not the fact that were in first place; its the fact that the only reason were there is because the tigers are scuffling worse than we are, and we know whichever team snaps out it first will win the division.

The best analogy is a browns game; you watch and you wonder when the seams will come apart. I don't want to sound negative, but after the last two weeks, it seems most LGT'ers and Cleveland Fans in general just want to see a spark of something that seems like they are fighting.
