Minor Action: 8/22

The soup made me do it tonight:

Buffalo 7 (69-61)
Pawtucket 6

Box

Sowers got the start and the victory in what superficially was a good start, but in reality is a step back from his last couple of outings.  When Sowers got sent down it was clear he needed to do at least two of the following three things much better; strike guys out, not walk them, keep the ball in the park.  Lately he's done a good job with that, but tonight he went 6.1, gave up only 5 hits and 2 runs, but walked 2, struck out only 1, and allowed a HR.  Not terrible...but not a sign of great progress.  Joe Inglett was the offensive hero with 4 RBIs and a big 3B.  Marte had a decent night at the plate with two singles and two walks.  Mulhern (35) and Jason Cooper (25) added doubles, while Ben Francisco put in a single a walk and his 21st SB (and 7th CS).  Ben's tear hasn't slowed down since his demotion, .333/.389/.529 for August coming into tonight.

Akron 4 (71-56)
Erie 7

Box

After getting down 4 early, the Aeros rallied to tie it, only to see Reid Santos give up the lead and take the loss.  Santos has actually been solid all season in Akron and is something of a bullpen sleeper for the second half of next season.  Jordan Brown provided the only real excitement on offense with his 10th HR of the season in a 2-3 effort.  He's now got 44 extra-base hits on the season and a very nice 52:45 BB:K ratio.  Stephen Head who seemed like the wrong guy to promote to Akron from Kinston a couple of weeks ago still does.  He had a double tonight, but it's only his 3rd XBH since the promotion and his .167/.186/.214 line at Akron coming into tonight is thoroughly uninspiring.

Kinston 3 (34-25, 2nd half)
Potomac 6

Box

Steven Wright got roughed around in his start and continues to get roughed around in the Carolina League (8.76 ERA).  Matt Meyer, a 22-year old lefty reliever who had been putting up a very solid season till a rough patch about a week ago, put in a solid outing tonight (2.1IP,0H,0R,0BB,4K).  Matt Whitney went 1-5 on the night with 2Ks, but that one hit was his 30th HR of the season (14th with Kinston).  Chris Gimenez added three hits including his 16th 2B of the season (to go along with 25 HRs).  Uber-hot Josh Rodriguez went 1-3 with two walks, but added his 32nd error at shortstop for the season.

Lake County 2 (27-28, 2nd half)
Lakewood 11

Box

Lake County got blasted by Lakewood.  Adam Davis and Cirilo Cumberpatch each had three hits.  Luis Valdez pitched well in relief (3IP,0H,0R,1BB,2K).  Not too much else of excitement.

Mahoning Valley 7
Auburn 8 (12 innings)

Box

GCL Indians 2
GCL Tigers 3

I'll let you sort through these games...
