Indians sign Scott Elarton

According to cleveland.com, the Indians have signed Scott Elarton to a minor league deal and he will report to Buffalo.  He was 2-4 with a 10.46 ERA in nine starts for Kansas City this year.  The site says that Elarton will pitch out of the bullpen, which I find interesting.  He has pitched as a reliever before, for Houston in 1998 and 1999 when he first came up to the majors.

I'm not really sure what the Indians see in Elarton, other than just to provide some depth in AAA.  His ERA+ hasn't been over 100 since 2000.  I do remember Elarton pitching fairly well for the Tribe down the stretch in 2005, but he's been pretty horrible the past two years.  Maybe they think he can successful as a long man out of the bullpen when necessary.
