2005 White Sox vs. 2007 Indians, 2007 Sox vs. 2009 Indians

Don't know how else to caption this. I really don't want to compare the teams.

Watching tonight's game and realizing what a train wreck of 2007 both the White Sox and Astros are having just two years after the World Series, I wondered how many of you would take a 2007 Indians World Series win if a 2009 was guaranteed to be just like the White Sox season this year (not that we could ever see Wedge call out his team like Ozzie).

Would you take a 2007 WS win knowing 2009 would be a train wreck
Heck yes, are you crazy Indy Dave? After 59 years I don't care what it takes.

No - nothing is worth being as miserable as the Sox are this year

Who voted against a WS victory?  Are you kidding?

Re: 2005 White Sox vs. 2007 Indians, 2007 Sox vs.
You must be joking.  After 46 years of losing in my lifetime, nothing could ever spoil my enjoyment of a World Championship.  The Tribe could be a train wreck in '09; they could move to Columbus in '09; they could become a Yankees farm team in '09, and I'd still have warm, golden memories of the '07 title.

Ask any randomly selected White Sox fan (if you can't find any, try the nearest prison) if they'd trade the 2005 title for a 2007 contender, and see what kind of an answer you get.

I think you should redo your poll options.

Win the World Series, and get punched in the nuts two years from now,

or

Continue getting punched in the nuts for all eternity.

CHOOSE WISELY

I really want the two people who voted 'no' to fess up.  Was it a mistake?
Absolutely GIDDY that Michigan lost today. Now calling all my friends who went to App State to personally thank and congratulate them.

Re: 2005 White Sox vs. 2007 Indians, 2007 Sox vs.
All right, I'll fess up.  Personally, I'll take sustained success over a long period of time rather than a flash in the pan for the whole enchilada.  Example:  would you rather be a Marlins fan for the last 12 years, or an Indians fan?  I would take the latter.  Every year except for '03 and '04 I thought the Tribe had a chance to make it to the postseason... and we all know it's a crap shoot after that.

Also!  the question is stated, "Would you take a 2007 WS win knowing 2009 would be a train wreck?"  One, we could definitely win the World Series this year and still be a formidable team in 09, 10, 11, etc... I'm just as excited about that senario as I am for the next month and a half.  I think this club is setup to be championship caliber for the next 5 years.  Two, the White Sox are doomed for the forseeable future.  They have one of the worst farm systems in baseball and perhaps the least talented big league club in all of baseball.  Not only that, but they're led by abrasive, stubborn personalities that are delusional enough to think they'll be in contention again soon, so they're extending contracts instead of rebuilding.

My conclusion: if we happen to make it to the ALCS or even win the pennant but ultimately fall short this year, I'll be fine with that knowing what the next 5 years probably holds.

I understand the arguments against this, but spend a few minutes over at SouthSideSox to see how they're handling it.  There's only so many times they can watch that '05 season review dvd.

Also!  Also!

I bet Shapiro would vote "no", as well... just my opinion.

That's because if we won a WS one year and stunk for the next 4 he'd probably get fired.  By if we teases Dolan for 5 years he keeps his job.  I'd go for 5 years of $1M/year employment over a three and out every time.

Re: 2005 White Sox vs. 2007 Indians, 2007 Sox vs.
Once you're in the tournament, winning a World Series takes a lot of luck (Sox, Cards).  We preach small sample size, and the playoffs are exactly that, a small sample, where anybody can get hot and succeed.  Thus, the results of the playoffs are largely out of the control of the GM (not totally, but mostly).  So the best he can do is field a consistently good team to get in that crap shoot called the playoffs as many times as possible, in as many years as possible.  This is not a "tease", it's a strategy, and I for one love it, if it's successful (ie, a club that can consistenly win b/w 85-95 games most years).

I have no idea how the income analogy applies.

You would never trade a WS away no matter how you look at it.

Re: 2005 White Sox vs. 2007 Indians, 2007 Sox vs.
Of course it's just a fun excercise, because no one can ever "trade away" a World Series, b/c a championship is never guaranteed.

But say Joe Table had a one-two-three ninth inning in game 7, in 1997.  Let's also say for the next decade after that the Tribe was run like the Pirates have been.

No, I most certainly would not take that senario over reality.

Re: 2005 White Sox vs. 2007 Indians, 2007 Sox vs.
I'm guessing you're fairly young, part of the generation that has seen mostly competitive Indians teams.  I watched the Tribe get run "like the Pirates" for about 3 decades, and I would unhesitatingly sit through 3 more decades of it in exchange for one World Series title.

Put another way, I'm envious of long-time Pirates fans.  Sure they suck now, but jeez, they won 2 championships in in my lifetime (1971, 1979) and a third in my gestation (1960).

We were talking hypotheicals here.  Here's your choice: you can win one year but then you're the Royals for the next four years or you're the Braves.  Which one would you chose if you're Shapiro?  My guess is he'd pick the one that made him the most money - just like everybody else.

Re: 2005 White Sox vs. 2007 Indians, 2007 Sox vs.
The hypothetical we're talking about is in the question.  Would you take a world series this year, only to have one of the least talented organizations in baseball two years later?  I voted no, b/c I'd rather see what happens in the next 5-plus years with an organization that is stacked, talent wise.

Shapiro probably could have made more money with another organization, but he stayed (in part due to working environment).  Beane turned down more money offered by the Red Sox.

A WS is eternal, you have that right. And that's why a couple years of losing doesn't bother me. The Sox will be remembered for that WS more than a crappy year in 2007.

Re: 2005 White Sox vs. 2007 Indians, 2007 Sox vs.
My brother-in-law has been a crazed fan of the Boston Red Sox for all of his 55 or so years on this planet.  Since October 2004, he's had an entirely different personality.  After losing for his whole life (and then some), finally they were winners--once and forever.  He still sweats out every game, every injury, and every trade rumor, but now he's playing with house money. I understand that the Red Sox have continued to be contenders and thus don't fit this hypothetical, but I can assure you that this does not matter; he'd be miserable if the 2007 Red Sox sucked like the 2007 White Sox, but it would not diminish in the least his continuing elation over that one championship.  And that's approximately how I feel about the possibility of a title this year.
