Weak competition? Don't underestimate a team willing to spend money.

Re: Smartball through 2012
Yes, that cash they laid out for Erstad and Macdougal has killed us this year.

Re: Smartball through 2012
Since 2.25 million dollars is big money. Which is their combined salary this year.

Re: Smartball through 2012
If that 2.25 million is representative of how they spend money, I am not terribly concerned. And, given they are paying a 107 OPS+ player $11 million a year, I think it is. Spending money like an idiot gets you 61-83.

Re: Smartball through 2012
We have had plenty of crap signings like those so don't hold your head so damn high. A team that is willing to spend ridiculous money can afford bad FA decisions. I don't think that 2.25 mil is going to kill their piggybank either.

Re: Smartball through 2012
$109.6M gets you into a battle for worst record with the $95.1M Orioles.

Re: Smartball through 2012
Correct, therefore that $2.25 seems rather indicative of idiotic management. Spending $200 million on scrubs assures you nothing.

Re: Smartball through 2012
By your logic, Shapiro is a terrible GM. He was such an idiot that he spent 3.3 mil on Roberto Hernandez. I demand that he be fired.

Re: Smartball through 2012
No, by my logic, spending over $100 million in that manner would be. Either way, I think we agree that we have nothing to fear for now. I think that so long as the current regime is in place we are fine, you think that they may just throw enough money at the problem to fix it. I guess time will tell. Until then, let us join in rejoicing at their expense this year.

Re: Smartball through 2012
Shapiro also spent  over $4M this year on guy who's hitting .253  .376  .436

Then he extended him for another $57M.

Re: Smartball through 2012
It's interesting to see that a lot of people having sub-par years by their standards got extensions.

Dye, Hafner, Zambrano, Ozzie.

We also saw earlier extensions for Westbrook and Vernon Wells, neither of whom exploded out of the gate.

Off the top of my head, Ichiro is the only one earning his new contract.  Of course, Jake has been himself of late.

Re: Smartball through 2012
They earned those contracts with their previous years efforts.

Re: Smartball through 2012
See, that's the trick.

CC's earning his $20M a year now for us.  Now in 15 months let somebody else pay him the salary, not us.

Re: Smartball through 2012
That is an interesting way to look at it. And if it weren't for his young age I'd completely buy into that line of thinking (which would suggest basically avoiding re-upping players). I think CC has certainly earned whatever he will make after next year, but I also think theres a good chance he'll earn whatever he makes in his second FA contract year as well [may not have came out right, I basically saying that after his contract that he signs after '08 his next contract (5-7 years later) will have been earned by what I expect to be similar numbers through what should be the peak of his career.]

Re: Smartball through 2012
I keep forgetting this.  The best chance we have of a hometown discount is if we can sell to CC that he can cash in even more after his next contract is up.

Re: Smartball through 2012
And this is just one more reason not to root for him to win the Cy Young.

Re: Smartball through 2012
I'm actually holding my head so high for that very reason. Our bad decisions have not made us the worst team in baseball. Actually, we lead the division so I guess I miss your point.

Re: Smartball through 2012
My point is that the White Sox can be competitive because of their willingness to spend ridiculous amounts of money.  Writing them off as terrible for the next five years because of an Ozzie Guillen contract extension.....I just don't follow that logic. I think you are misconstruing my point. Just because th White Sox don't have a good farm system or Mark Shapiro as GM doesn't mean they can't be dangerous to us in the future.

Re: Smartball through 2012
It's important to add that I doubt that the White Sox will seriously contend for the division in the next few years. I just think that writing them off  is a huge mistake.
