Raiding Shapiro's Cabinet

According to espn, the pirates are close to signing neal huntington as their gm today. Link.

Before reading this I must admit that I did not know who Neal Huntington is. But after a quick check of indians.com, he is listed as the "Special Assistant to GM". So I don't know important he was to the tribe, or what he exactly he assisted with, but I guess this is something us tribe fans should begin to get accustomed to. As Shapiro and the Indians continue to have success, others are going to continue to want our brains.

Re: Raiding Shapiro's Cabinet
I can't really forsee Antonelli staying with us much longer either. He seems to be at the top of every list when it comes time to hire a new GM.

Re: Raiding Shapiro's Cabinet
I heard a rumor that he just built himself a big house in the suburbs, which would counter your fears. Not everybody wants the stress of being a GM.  Though I'm sure Antonetti has plenty of sleepless nights, ultimately he's not going to be held publicly accountable for the Indians' decisions (unless it's one of those contract negotiations he's obviously in charge of, a la Hafner). That may be worth a cut in pay. He might also just really like the organization and the owners. You can't buy that -- particularly not in Pittsburgh, Seattle, Baltimore, Arlington . . .

Re: Raiding Shapiro's Cabinet
Personally, I'd wait for a big market team with the right owner to have an opening. Even the slightest mistakes get exposed if you're working with a shoestring budget. Money can help cover up those mistakes. Look at how a $200M payroll turned a previously mediocre manager (Joe Torre) into a legend! I don't doubt that the benefit of a big payroll would help Antonetti keep his first GM job longer than if he worked for the Pirates or some other small market operation.

Re: Raiding Shapiro's Cabinet
There may be some truth to that, though I wonder if big market teams are less likely to roll the dice on statsy assistant GMs since the Dodgers and DePo.

Re: Raiding Shapiro's Cabinet
Paul DePoesta got canned pretty quickly, but new owner Frank McCourt can be generously described as a tool who wanted to ingratiate himself to the fraternity. DePodesta's upgrading of the farm system is what's keeping Coletti's veteran disaster from looking a whole lot worse. Having the right owner matters more, I guess. I mean Dolan isn't exactly spending money hand over fist, but I'd say Shapiro has the securest job in baseball.

An example of why Ned Coletti is a retard....

Dodger's 3rd Basemen in 2007 are hitting - (.252/.326/.391)

Andy LaRoche essentially graduated AAA in 2006 going a half season with a (.322/.400/.550) line and K/BB of nearly 1.3!! Good discipline AND power!! You would think the Dodgers could afford the luxury of brining this kid up, but instead let him stay in AAA for most of the season and are only brining him up when everything seems to be going to hell. BTW, Andy LaRoche in 73 AAA games this year went (.309/.399/.589)    .

Re: Raiding Shapiro's Cabinet
I am crazy envious of some of the guys the Dodgers seem to leave hanging around in AAA for no reason. Maybe James Loney will teach them a lesson.

Re: Raiding Shapiro's Cabinet
Did indeed just build a big house on the West Side and moved in within the past 6 months.

I would think that he'd wait for the right environment (owner, facilities, arrangement, etc.) and probably consults Shapiro quite a bit for input.

Re: Raiding Shapiro's Cabinet
Comfortable by a normal standard, yes, obviously.  But in baseball terms, you don't have to be making that much money to afford an 850K home.  Someone making 250K would have no trouble with that mortgage payment.

Re: Raiding Shapiro's Cabinet
Antonetti is only 32 young.  While some young guys are getting GM jobs, he can afford to wait a few years, particularly if he is confident his stock will rise along with the Indians.

So the Pittsburgh Pirates are run by zombies? That does seem to make sense given their record over the past 15 seasons.

But seriously, it's a good sign when other clubs start looking for new GMs from your organization.

He preceded John Farrell as farm director.  One of his recent jobs was advance ML scouting.

Re: Raiding Shapiro's Cabinet
Pirates deny that they've hired Huntington:

Pirates president Frank Coonelly, on the job slightly more than a week, issued a statement that the club has not made a hiring he called the most important the club has made in years.

"It is too early to comment on possible candidates for our general manager position," Coonelly said. "We have had numerous interviews with multiple candidates, all of which would make for an excellent choice.

Re: Raiding Shapiro's Cabinet
The Pirates also deny, somewhat more plausibly, that their communications director graduated from high school.
