From Yahoo.com:

Former Indians pitcher Stanford pleads not guilty to disorderly conduct charge

September 21, 2007

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Former Cleveland Indians pitcher Jason Stanford pleaded not guilty Friday to a charge of disorderly conduct involving an alleged scuffle in a nightclub district.

Stanford, 30, who was designated for assignment by the Indians on Aug. 4, appeared in Cleveland Municipal Court with his attorney.

He was released on $250 bond, and the case was scheduled for an Oct. 30 trial.

Police arrested Stanford about 2:45 a.m. Thursday in the Warehouse District after he allegedly scuffled with a man, knocking off his glasses.

Stanford was arrested in the same area two years ago on a disorderly conduct charge that was cleared off his record after he finished a diversion program for first-time offenders, according to court spokesman George Yarbrough.

Stanford appeared in eight games for Cleveland, going 1-1 with a 4.78 ERA.

Re: Jason Stanford
Why is he hanging around Cleveland after we let him go?  Doesn't he have a market as a left-handed starter?

Re: Jason Stanford
He was assigned to Buffalo (he passed through waivers I think). But you have a valid question anyways.....why is he hanging around Cleveland?

Get lost Stanford.

Re: Jason Stanford
Stanford had the option to decline the assigment, since it was not the first time he'd been outrighted.  He accepted the assignment to Buffalo -- I assume no other offers were immediately forthcoming, and there is a small but steady paycheck to continue collecting from the Bisons.

Re: Jason Stanford
Why so hostile towards Stanford?  Did he dump your sister or something?

Re: Jason Stanford
He's been an idiot for a long time. As noted in the diary above this isn't the first time he's done this. Plus, having known the reported details of the first incident (that he started a fight with another man because that other man was wearing a "pink" shirt that led Stanford to assume and publicly call out this gentleman for being gay). He's not the kind of guy I'd really be rooting for....and once again, he's hanging around the West 6th district, come on, are you serious....

Re: Jason Stanford
I guess you know a great deal more about Jason Stanford than I do.  I'm not sure I was even aware of his existence before this season.

While I dislike homophobic behavior possibly as much as you do, I'm sorry to have to suggest that it may be more common in MLB (and professional sports in general) than we might like.  Not that it's an excuse or a defense, just something to consider.

Not being from Cleveland, the reference to the "west 6th district" is lost on me.

Re: Jason Stanford
I do agree with you though about the prevalence of stupid behavior by players. He just stuck out to me with his first offense that happened around this time two years ago.

Well hanging out in West 6th district is kinda lame, it has kind of taken over for what the "flats" used to be (dance clubs filled with underage girls and terrible restaurants).

Re: Jason Stanford
West 6th is OK. It's one o the few places I've ever really "hung out" dowtown, and I can't say that I really know of any places that are too much better.

Re: Jason Stanford
There's this nice "up and coming" little side street (I think its E.3rd) basically between Flannery's and the House of Blues/The Corner Ally. There's Pickwick and Frolic, Hilarities (comedy club) and some new mexican restaruant that is nice over there. I'd also say that a few of the bars by the Jake aren't that bad (The Boneyard, The Winking Lizard, etc.). But, I still think you are better off going to Treemont, Ohio City, Coventry, and even Lakewood than going to W.6th, unless living up the old school days of the "flats" is what you are into (and believe me as a adolescent male, I lived it up).

Re: Jason Stanford
I'm a big fan of Coventry of course, and Ohio City. I just like West 6th because it's more... downtown.

Re: Jason Stanford
I don't mean to rain on the Jason Stanford hating parade, but the primary difference between him and any number of other ML ne'er-do-wells is that he's gotten caught. We may just be spoiled by the "what up, bro" mystique of this roster, but take a pretty girl out downtown to the bar the away club's at, and you'll be reminded in short order that a lot of your average major leaguers are NOT cool dudes. At least Stanford's had the good sense not to be drunk & disorderly behind the wheel.

I suppose it's also worth pointing out that the Indians have been very sensitive to character issues since Bradley -- remember how hard they worked to justify acquiring Michaels (from a personality perspective, anyway)? This team has resuscitated Jason Stanford at least three times by my count. If this incident is worth getting fired about, there won't be a fourth.

Re: Jason Stanford
I don't disagree with you at all, about the fact that he happens to get caught more often than others, at the same time, I'm not going to not "hate on him" just because other players are that way and just don't do it in public. I'm not really down with  homophobic idiots. But defend him if you want to.

Re: Jason Stanford
I don't think fleerdon was saying he's "down with" that or anything else Stanford has said or done.  I think it was more just a reality check that we don't never really know the off-field character of the men wearing the team uniform.

I would just nitpick that while the average major leaguer may not be a cool dude, Stanford is actually a below-average major leaguer, or if you prefer, a minor leaguer.

Re: Jason Stanford
I certainly wasn't defending Stanford specifically, much less homophobia in general, and I don't intend to. But if this had been any other idiot than one you've seen in an Indians uniform, it wouldn't be news here, and that's kind of my point: I have every confidence the Indians as an organization will deal with this properly. And as Jay intimates, it's not as if Jason Stanford would have a very long leash even on a less conscientious club.

Re: Jason Stanford
Is anyone else intrigued by the media habit of displaying a player's stats in news blurbs? What's the point? "So-and-so's pitcher may be going to jail, but at least he wasn't any good!" I think the most head scratching example would have to be seeing Cory Lidle's stats in his obit. As if it wasn't news enough that a major leaguer had died by crashing his private plane into an apartment complex. Weird.
