From the Canton Rep

Andy Marte, Juan Lara, and Mujica were all called up today.
No Choo, Sowers, or M Miller.
Lara appeared in nine games for Cleveland last year, but had not pitched in a game this season. Mujica was called up for the fifth time this summer. He has allowed 12 runs in 12 2/3 big-league innings (8.53 ERA). Marte began the season as the Indians' starting third baseman, but was optioned to Buffalo on May 28 and never returned. He batted .267 with 17 doubles, 16 home runs and 60 RBIs in 96 Triple-A games.

Re: 3 More Called Up
Okay, look at it this way. There are 21 locks to make the postseason roster:
4 starters - C.C., Fausto, Jake and Paul
4 outfielders - Grady, Kenny, Jason, Franky
6 infielders - Casey, Jhonny, AstroCab, Garko, Gomez, Pronk
2 catchers - Victor, Kelly
5 relievers - JoBo, Rafael, Rafael, Aaron, Jensen
We actually don't need anybody else except for depth and in-game flexibility. So who gets the last four spots?
Barfield, Nixon, Mastny, Francisco, Rivas and a half-dozen other possible pitchers. But it does bear mentioning that the first three guys have been on the roster for the entire season, and that they'd more than adequately fill the depth roles required of them. I think Barfield in particular is a lock, because they're not going to want to have Gomez as their only backup option for 2B, SS and 3B, and I can't see them taking Rivas over Barfield.
That basically leaves Francisco competing with Rivas and a bunch of relievers -- including Cliff Lee -- for the last spot. And while there's a case for Francisco, given the others already on the roster, there isn't anyone critical. I think you could make the case that the best thing to do with that 25th spot is to use it for a long reliever -- if if it's Cliff Lee.

Any other Chicago-type persons are welcome to join as well, lemme know.
Re: 3 More Called Up
Hopefully, Wedge will be able to give the starters a few days off here & there, to keep guys fresh.
We have enough LHP's in the pen to do a lot of lefty-vs-lefty, righty-vs-righty matchups in the later innings; it will be interesting to see whether Wedge goes that route, or sticks with the 3 guys he trusts. If goes for the matchups, be prepare for some really long games.

Re: 3 More Called Up
Miller's had trouble throwing strikes this season, and it's not just him avoiding left-handers. He's walked 13 righties in 21.2 IP against RHBs.
Koplove's had a much more manageable walk rate, a better ground ball rate, and he doesn't have the freakishly low BABIP that's arguably been holding down Miller's ERA.
If the Indians aren't going to use Miller, I'd love to see him get a chance somewhere else. In a world where Rob Bell, Gary Glover, John Wasdin, and Dave Borkowski keep getting MLB jobs, it's a travesty that Matt Miller is a seemingly permanent fixture in Buffalo.
Re: 3 More Called Up
It definitely sucks for Miller that he's not getting a cup of coffee this year, but I have a feeling there's a pretty good reason for it -- like his velocity and location are probably off because of the elbow injuries. It's not like we're drowning in right-handed relief pitching and can afford to just toss him away.
Anybody know if the Indians control Miller's rights for 2008?
Re: 3 More Called Up
So basically, if we want to pay him 600K and try to keep him on the major league roster all year, he's ours. The other option will be to non-tender him, save a 40-man spot for a prospect, and try to get him on a minor league deal.
I'd opt for the former. As old as he is, good relievers are not easy to come by, and I tend to think he's a cut above the usual minor-league-deal fodder.
