Game Thread: ALCS Game Two

I'm too lazy to post the lineups. Plus it's not like we're actually gonna talk about the game anyway.

Oh that's right, there's that 75-word limit. Hmm...

So I ordered Chinese food and I'm still waiting on it. Think I'm gonna cheap it up and go with Bud Light tonight, because my (Trojan) fridge is still overflowing with it from my last party. What's everyone else's food/drink combo for the night?

already ate some pizza (pepperoni and eggplant) and will be drinking some Magic Hat IPA. Can’t do much, though, as I’m very unfortunately working.

That’s cool. I’m working on some blog stuff and a cover letter for GLBC. I hate cover letters.

I used to hate cover letters. But then I learned the pain of writing recommendation letters…

I bet. I’m struggling with how to make myself sound appealing to a brewery with a background in political science.

play it the other way…use your political science degree as an expression of your intelligence and ability to communicate, but communicate about your passion for Cleveland and beer

Yeah, that’s probably the best way to go.

“just about everything”

I’m essentially neutral on Tampa (although I kind of like Joe Maddon for some reason), but Boston deserves no more sports accomplishments for quite some time.

but as a beer drinker, i’ve drank lots of different kinds of beers in lots of different kind of settings and found them all to be “drinkable”. it just seems to me like they’re advertising for the high school crowd, saying, “drink me and you’re less likely to awkwardly boot in your friend’s mom’s passenger seat”

by APV on Oct 11, 2008 8:45 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

This isn’t one of my essays but I like what I wrote.

There are a number of efforts that could be implemented to better U.S. foreign policy. Central amongst these efforts are greatly enhanced cultural diplomacy programs. The Strategic Language Initiative is an excellent path to not only provide current U.S. governments with better understanding of foreign lands and cultures, but to breed new generations of policy makers and thinkers. The U.S. government should make it possible for nearly any recent-college graduate, with interest and relevant commitment to an interest in foreign affairs, to learn valuable languages abroad. Young Americans are able to better serve their own futures, and the future of their country, by personally living a foreign context. We should strive to seek out dedicated adherents to cultural diplomacy amongst our youth, and do so with an entirely greater magnitude of urgency.

These new disciples of American foreign policy, upon their return, will carry a spillover effect into the public. Expertise, not ideology, must once again dominate our foreign policy discussions. If not, we will continue to chart a disastrous course for both this great country and the world at large.

Anti-Ben Fran before it was cool.

by Gradyforpresident on Oct 11, 2008 8:46 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Pretty good. Really like this:

Expertise, not ideology, must once again dominate our foreign policy discussions.

But I’m not so sure about these phrases:

an entirely greater magnitude of urgency
new disciples of American foreign policy

I was thinking…

Young US Americans are able to better serve their own futures, and the future of their country, by personally believing that a foreign context is necessary for people to be identified on a map in the Iraq.

my unsolicited advice: collapse the first two sentences into a single sentence. as it stands now, your opening sentence serves no purpose. secondly, that structure “…not only…, but to…” is one I use all the time. and I don’t think it is a good one. You can write that sentence without those words and it’ll be better.

back to drinking beer.

spaghetti and meatballs from a can sounds unappetizing. root beer sounds tasty, though…which brand?

by APV on Oct 11, 2008 8:53 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

It is unappetizing. I ran out of ravioli in a can.

Mug rootbeer. Love it. Cooled in the Trojan fridge.

by Voltaire on Oct 11, 2008 8:54 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I like Mug, too. i recommend frozen ravioli. super easy to make. I used to live off that stuff. I typically find things out of a can gross.

The kitchen is two floors down and communal. I will eventually grow so sick of canned stuff I’ll start using it, but I’m trying to stay far, far away for as long as I can.
