Game Thread: World Series Games Three and Four
Game Three: Jamie Moyer vs. Matt Garza
Anyone else working tonight?
Fan promotion in Philly tonight: if you can throw faster than Moyer on the pitch speed machine, you get a free jumbo dog. Moyer is old ... very old. He debuted in 1986. I'm pretty sure a few of the Rays weren't even born then. Looks like the Phils are already up 1-0 as Garza is starting the game off shaky.
Game Four: Didn't seem like we needed a whole new thread for it. Carry on. [Jay]

I’m pretty impressed the Phils have been doing as well as they have with very little contribution from Ryan Howard.
Seriously. I know this is a common overture, but Tressel’s play-calling has just been way too conservative tonight.

You know, I cheer for OSU because I figure, like, it’s the one big, bad, hated, bandwagon team I can legitimately cheer for. And even then, I suffer an inordinate amount of ball-crushing bedshittery.

I lived in Nebraska as a young kid. Grew up a Cornhuskers fan during the era where we lost every year to Miami or Oklahoma. Moved to Cleveland around 1st grade. Was a casual OSU fan through school, but didn’t have any connections to it and maintained my Nebraska ties (while becoming a dedicated fan of all things Cleveland). Ohio St. fields a lot of great teams but loses to Michigan just about every season. Go off to college (Atlanta), watch a lot of SEC football, get some mild satisfaction out of Nebraska’s championships. Start grad school at Michigan. Given that I’m actually directly tied to Michigan, become a big Michigan fan. They proceed to lose to OSU basically every year I was there. I am not someone you want rooting for your college football team. Although at this point, given I actually have two degrees from there, I’m pretty much a Wolverine fan for life.
Garza hasn’t been nearly as locked in as he was in Game 7.
If he could become more consistent, he could become a very good #1 starter, but his inconsistency is his main weakness (and that partly stems from him being an “emotional” player).
Just my 2 cents.
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
Seriously, Moyer is feeling it tonight.

Man, no kidding. Diving & then a flip with the glove to the barehand by Howard, he should’ve gotten the out for the style points alone.

I’m listening to the radio, couldn’t take McCarver & Buck anymore.

I’m in Philly, so I get to listen to Harry Kalas, which is awesome.

Considering the non-HBP of Rollins and the “ring him up & send him to first” on Baldelli in the last game, I think the Phillies might be a little pissed at the umps.
http://hasthelargehadroncolliderdestroyedtheworldyet.com -- just in case.
That’s possible, though I think Culbreath’s strike zone benefited Moyer much more than Garza tonight.
In other words, Moyer essentially needed that strike zone to be as effective as he was tonight; the larger strike zone is less important for Garza, so the larger strike zone certainly worked in the Phillies’ favor tonight. (Along with the wind).
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
Right. Although “CC” was very out.
Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.
Hello westbrook,
I’m not sure I know what you are referring to, unless you’re saying that CC needed a larger strike zone, even with his power stuff, because he couldn’t command it.
It’s true that a larger strike zone can benefit a power pitcher as well, but a power pitcher can work just as well in a smaller strike zone; a soft-tosser like Moyer working with a smaller strike zone would likely have led to him giving up many more hits and/or walks than he did tonight.
Just my 2 cents.
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
They’re getting the runs in “fundamentally,” so they’ve taken full advantage of this inning to get back to within a run.
It will be interesting to see if Baldelli and/or Perez gets in there, now that Moyer is out of there. Gross hasn’t done a bad job tonight (2 RBIs), though he’s arguably not the hitter Baldelli is and doesn’t have Perez’s speed.
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
Granted, it’s a SSS, but Gross was considered a pretty good hitting prospect at one time.
So far, I haven’t been impressed – he looks almost as much like an automatic out as a pitcher.
In his defense though, Longoria (among a few other Rays, like Iwamura and even Pena) also looked overmatched by Jamie Moyer in his first 2 ABs before he crushed a pitch that would have easily been a HR 99.9% of the time.
Just my 2 cents.
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
I’ve gotten into that show recently. I thought most of the first season was great, but it’s been getting on my nerves since… Seems like they’re doing a lot of recycling.

I’ll say once again that I can’t imagine an ump being in a better position and making a worse call (in reference to the Rollins situation).
Sour grapes.
Steel Nick
That was a terrible call. The one last night where the baserunner was out at first on Moyer’s diving throw, I could at least see that he maybe was shielded by Howard. That play, though, was about 3 feet from him and he had the world’s clearest view of it. I don’t really understand how it’s possible he missed it. And as a Phillies fan, I don’t even like it as a “make up call” or whatever. A terrible call is a terrible call, whether it’s for you or against you.
http://hasthelargehadroncolliderdestroyedtheworldyet.com -- just in case.
Interesting thing is, the ump had a better view than the camera, he was right on top of the play. How could he not see that Longoria’s glove was practically right up Rollins’ ass? Is it possible the camera lies?
Pat Burrell has Victor Martinez-esque speed, which is impressive for an outfielder.

Guys, I am doing BIG THINGS over at Royals Review. We are all like best friends with them now and we’re going to get to go to doublestix’s bar mitzvah. I told him had to invite all of us or none of us. He’s going to have a donut making machine he said.
Interesting comment from McCarver, he says managers never give the runner on 2B the steal sign, he’s always on his own. Can that really be right?
i don’t know. You generally would only even attempt to steal 3B with one out, never zero or two outs, so who knows?
given how painful baserunning outs are at 3rd, this just can’t be true right? and don’t you always see the guy on 2nd checking with the 1st and 3rd base coaches?
I doubt it. You tell me Sciosia has never told a guy to steal third…?
Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.
No, either they reach 3B after rounding 2B or they get thrown out. The Angels don’t believe in stopping at 2B.

Yeah. Weird. How many little things like that do mods actually control? Is there anything else we don’t realize?
I’ve grown more patient for slow writing, which it certainly is. The show can get a little monotonous at times, as well, but it is very well done. Not awesome. But for regular television, pretty damn good.
the show puts together some very good scenes. you sometimes have to wade through a lot of crap to get to them, but there are some good ones.
for me the show’s failing is its attempt at nailing down a BIG THEME in the context of social changes, both public and domestic, as the 50s fade into the 60s. It achieves this spectacularly at times in individual scenes. But the whole plot/narrative of the story is just to repetitive and to blunt to be exceptional. You end up viewing it as comedic rather than serious. But it’s a good show, just not an awesome show.

Is there some kind of modal distribution on when vampires are popular? It seems like we’re trapped in a sinusoidal vampire wave, starting with that Cruise-Pitt movie, Interview with a Vampire or whatever, then down, then up with Buffy, and then down, and now back up with two Vampire movies this fall “Let the Right One In” and “Twilight.”
I can’t help but assume everyone looks like their avatar. The avatar’s become paired strongly with names when I’m reading.

“The Phillies undefeated so far this postseason in their own house— House, that’s a good show on Fox —so Jimmy, what was it like….”
I mean really, are there execs in a room looking at numbers that suggest THIS BOOSTS RATINGS? Really?
While we’re on the topic of House, I chuckle a little every time they show the preview for the next show and the woman is like, “Come on, cry! Cry!”

I am in a fully student-produced play. She is the same year as me, and is the director. Let’s just say we have completely differing personalities.
I needed a costume, and she had the money for it, and the car to drive to the thrift store. She also had the authority to order that I accompany her.
So we get to the store. My character needs a tweed suite, a shirt, and a tie. I pick out a tweed suit, and, pausing to let the last of my spine slowly curve and melt away, bring it to her and ask if it works. She lets out a snicker and says “here, I’ll do it,” after which I must suffer through twenty minutes of her having me try on various jackets and hold up various pants to my waist. It was as though she were some demonic evil girlfriendbot.
The entire experience was humiliating, simply because I knew everyone who looked at us assumed we were a couple. The thought of dating her, um, erm, you can figure out.
In the movie version of your life, you end up in bed with her the night of the play. Or the night before.
I’m just saying.
