Philly Fans Not Treating Rays Fans Cordially
Joe Romano a sports columnist for the St. Petersburg Times is complaining that Philly fans are being none too kind to Rays fans - including the children of some of the players. It seems like a typical Philadelphia sporting event - complete with the pelting of Joe Maddon's granddaughter with packets of mustard.

Typo fixed. I can’t say the same for your British accent.

The second-best part is the Philly Phan comments on the Tampa article, ranging from cinspiracy theory (“there are no mustard packets at CBP, so it’s all a lie!!!”) to belligerent drunk (“what did those kids expect – that’s what you get when you where [sic] opposing teams’ hats to our stadium!”) to insulting (“yeah, we harass children, but at least we have real fans and not bandwagon jumping, mojito drinking, pansies.”).
The actual best part was Joe Maddon calling out a Philly fan for drinking the wrong beer.
Philly can be a tough town, and its sports fans are not known for being polite, classy, or least of all sober. Having said that, the report is not very substantiated, and even if it’s totally true, not many fan bases would make a good impression after three hours of beered-up rain delay.
It reminds me of all the reports I see from NFL games now where disgruntled parents are complaining that the fans in the stands said the F word around their child. Know the environment you are putting yourself in
I’ll vouch that Clevelanders are not “cordial” even after rain, let alone a delay. I was at the home opener two years ago and an idiot in a Steelers jersey took the full venom of a very cold and wet crowd. He left considerably less well dressed and smelling considerably more of beer and stadium mustard. It happens.
Hey, I have something useful to say!
I actually teach a kid whose father is a part owner of the Rays. He was at the games in Philadelphia and got back to school at 2:50 today, which meant he was in class for 20 minutes. So that was useful.
I asked him how it was and this 13 year old boy went ashen. Somebody yelled “We will r__e all your bit____” at his mother and similarly terrible things were yelled at the other people in his party, including a lot of underage boys and girls. Somebody screamed at a pre-teen girl until she had to put a coat on over her Rays’ t-shirt.
He also got hit with mustard packets but he thought that was funny.
So, yeah. I don’t think there’s much of a defense here.
Your censored comment was so horrifying, it actually took several readings for me to comprehend.
At first, I thought, why are they yelling about releasing bitterns? Is this some sort of environmental protest?
