Mike Jacobs for Leo Nunez nearing consummation

I think Mike Jacobs is a hilarious model for a player. Hitting 32 HRs and OPS+ing 109 has got to be relatively unique.

Cory Snyder once did it!

So did the Rock. And Hawk Harrelson.

It’s pretty much a list of the most overrated players of the last 30 years. Minus Colavito.

I wouldn’t want to go anywhere near Jacobs

I would give up Crowe for Leo Nunez. Hell, maybe even Garko.

Mike Jacobs, when you have this guy ready to play 1B at the major league level?

by xrickx on Oct 30, 2008 2:50 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

At least he’s not about to hit arbitration with gaudy homer numbers, and the Royals didn’t give up a solid reliever.

It’s hard to hurt your team offensively when you hit 32 bombs, but Jacobs managed to do that. Regardless of what they gave up, to make this move the Royals apparently have little faith in Ka’aihue and have to believe Jacobs will improve his .299 OBP. Otherwise, it’s off.

What’s his story? An injury?

None that we know of.

I asked because it seems he was progressing nicely until 2006 at the age of 22. He was in AA and his numbers took a dive (and he played in a shorter number of games). The following year he went and repeated high-A and AA where he performed nicely, then last year he made serious stick in AA and AAA (which, I’ll grant you, is in the PCL as a 24-yr-old).

Seems like a nice prospect who had a bump in the road of some kind.

There may be an injury/story that I haven’t heard of.

Hindsight if, of course, 20/20, but those numbers aren’t particularly impressive – he had a good year in the California League, but couldn’t prove it to be “real” until he was a 24-year-old in double-A.

Not that he can’t necessarily be better than he was in 2008, but his track record doesn’t scream “this guy is stud” the way, say, Andy Marte’s did.

BTW, what ever happened to Andy? That’s really something we should discuss…

I think he should hit leadoff and we can move Grady down.

Brilliant.

Also, may as well trade for Mark Ellis, so he can bat and play second.

If we sign enough of these “leadoff hitter types,” we can move Grady down to ninth. You know, so he can hit a home run with all eight of those guys already on the bases.

by Jay on Oct 31, 2008 1:15 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   1 recs

Yes, but some of those guys are pretty slow. He might lap them!

by peter m on Oct 31, 2008 3:50 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If Grady hits it out of the park, he can just walk around the bases to make sure that doesn’t happen. :-)

The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.

You’re forgetting — Grady never walks when he can run, gives 110%, etc.

I wonder if Kuwiahauia has ever played a little third base.

Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.

The answer, in case you were wondering, is no.

He’s listed at 6-3, 230, and I’ve heard he’s bigger than that.

Still, if there’s even a remote chance…

The defensive end for the Giants?

I guess we could give ol’ Mathias a chance. Too bad we didn’t sign him before last years SB.

Dayton Moore should be thankful for low expectations.
