Loaded with infielders
There might be 2 or 3 possible solutions to Shapiro's infield problem here.

Will Fausto and Asdrubal be enough to do it? Or will we need to throw in a prospect?

I probably shouldn’t, but “wut” makes me laugh every time.

If the Marlins are going to give up Uggla as cheaply as they gave up Olsen/Willingham—just for the sake of saving money—it’s certainly worth Shapiro’s time to see how little he can give up. But Uggla is on a higher plane than those other players even though this is the first year he’s gotten on base at an acceptable rate and his defense is still extremely suspect.
I guess I’m saying for the right price I’d be in favor, but when is that not true?

I was also hoping our infield upgrade, unless it’s at first base, would be a major defensive player. But if the offense is going to be in the 128 OPS+ range I can deal.

for what it’s worth, Uggla’s RZR was better than Orlando Hudson’s last year and in 2006 (of course, Uggz had the worst zone rating for all 2Bs in the majors in 2007). In fact, his RZR and OZR are almost identical to Asdrubal’s last year.
what would florida want that we have? they have cameron maybin, so they probably don’t care about gutz. shoppach? prospects?

My assumption would be prospects with little to no service time accrued.

Echoing the Hans sentiment, I don’t think the Marlins would go for Shoppach as their m.o. with these trades has been to avoid arbitration

I want Dallas McPherson
I have been asking for him for 6 months already….40 AAA HR should translate into something…..

You mean Huntington Field.
The best thing probably is to hit [Grady] 2nd -- Jay

Yeah…I had no idea what the Columbus stadium name is. Dunn Tire is Buffalo’s.

I want you to stop using subject lines.
Hint hint.
All 40 homeruns gets you a 27 year old in AAA.
But in all seriousness,
McPherson is marginally intriguing. If he can play decent defense I’d make a minor move to acquire him.
He’s put up decent OPS+ everywhere he’s been. In 2005 and 2006, the years he had his most AB’s he put up a 96 and 97 OPS+. respectively. Not great but still bareable. Of course his OBP is low, he’s a power hitter. But I’m surprised his SLG and homerun totals have been so low
Is he a free agent or under Marlins control still?

FWIW, McPherson’s MLE (Major League Equivalent) from this year was .201/.313/.410 with 25 homers. And 181 Ks in 463 ABs.
He had 2.164 years of service time before this season, and I believe he accumulated 30 more days in September this year.
I’d take him if he was free, but I doubt he’s worth starting – he’s probably not better than Andy Marte, taking defense into account as well.

And definitely not better than Russell Branyan. All that’s left to do is decide whether Jay or I gets to be captain of the soon to launch vessel.

Wow. I would say he’s a lot better than Marte. Andy’s career minor league ops = .824. McPherson’s minor league ops = .970. McP is 3 yrs older but still has about half as many major league ab’s as Andy, and major league ops 54 point higher. In a full season, he’d probably put up an ops approaching 800. Andy’s defense is no doubt better but could it be that much better?

sorry, 513/371 = 0.72, not “about half”
by plato on Nov 12, 2008 6:42 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yes. His defense probably is that much better.

Are you actually suggesting we should ignore McPherson’s age and his defense? Really?
You know what we never talk about? What kind of numbers Andy Marte could post in a full season.
by FredOx on Nov 13, 2008 9:57 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
His stat line is misleading once you account for the fact that he would have hit a home run in every at bat that he was pinch-hit for.

Hey, maybe the Marlins can pick Marte up off the scrap heap at age 27 and give him a starting job. Then we can all clamor to trade for him.

Don’t forget that all of Dallas’ AAA numbers also come from the PCL, which is more of a hitters league than the IL.

Not only that, but he’s been in some of the best parks WITHIN the PCL – especially Albuquerque.
