The article also mentions the Yankees might be interested in Hudson. If they signed him they could look to trade Cano for a centerfielder. Could the Indians get Cano for a package of Gutz and other guys? If so, what would it take?

Is Cano really worth that much more than Gutierrez? Cano isn’t cheap.

Tempting, but I think Laffey is the “depth starter” most likely to contribute next year. I also think the Yankees will want more. Probably Gutz and Laffey. Not worth it of course, given cano’s down year.

The Yankees won’t have any interest in Laffey.
Especially not for Cano.

Good I don’t want that Yankee trash anyways

I think Shapiro is prepared to offer more in years than he wants to get this done, it is probably our only chance.
I think the Indians will try but Hudson will go for contract length. He is 32 after all.

And he’s not 32. He turns 31 next month. Born latest in the same year as Brian Roberts, Mark Ellis and Rafael Furcal.
Of those guys, I think the only one who might have a decent amount of value left in five years is Furcal.

This just doesn’t seem like a signing the Indians would make. It’s almost as if it would make to much sense for it to happen. I would love for it to take place, I just have my doubts.
It’s not a signing the Indians will make at 5/50. Hudson’s perception of his own value will have to come down substantially for him to be in the Indians’ price range.

How much do you think the Indians would be likely to pay. I’m guessing that it would have to be a 3-year contract – I doubt Shapiro goes 5 years on an infielder over 30. Would the Indians go 3/30? 3/27? 3/24?

I guess I’d parse it a little differently.
The Indians have a general sense of what the market will be for Hudson. They also know their own internal evaluation of the player and his health situation. So the first question is, will they even seriously consider Hudson? If they will, that means that they feel he’s above some certain acceptable-risk threshold. If they won’t, then they won’t bid on him at all.
So if he’s above that threshold, then I could see them going 3/30 on him. I think as a position player, he’s of comparable value to Westbrook, or not far from it.
I’m just not sure 3 years would be considered a serious offer unless the $$ per year was greater. Furcal will get at least 4 years and will definitely influence Hudson’s deal.
And on a somewhat related note, Jhonny’s been playing 3B exclusively so far this winter. I believe he’s done this before, so its not a huge brow raiser, but still…
I don’t know what Furcal will get, although it seems like 95% of the surprises come on the high side when it comes to free agents. Furcal missed 80% of the season this past season and was occasionally injured and generally terrible the year before. Where does a longer deal at a higher salary enter into that picture, exactly? I’m not taking for granted that he can get that four-year deal with an eight-figure salary.
I’m looking at your tags and…well ill let Nick comment
Also, I said it before and I’ll say it again, I’d rather have Furcal than Hudson. (Cheaper annual salary, fewer years, fewer question marks…arguably the better player and defender too)
Funny thing — when I first saw the headline here, I thought it referred to Tim Hudson. For a moment, I thought the plan was to stockpile Tommy John guys for 2010.

Her skills have seriously declined. Unsustainably high BABIP during the “Almost Famous” filming season.
How to Lose a guy in 10 days and Fools Gold were entertaining for their genre.

You may be confusing liking Kate Hudson with liking Matthew McConaughey

From what I’ve read, that high BABIP was achieved mostly in the editing stage.
Strangely, I too first thought of Tim Hudson.
well add me to the growing legion that initially thought of Tim Hudson….I wonder what that says about us as Cleveland Indians fans….
Um, that we know we really need more starting pitching?

While were off topic, I just want to say that the Browns cost me $70 today because they couldn’t beat the Texans.

If we’re going to go off-topic I would very much prefer we stick to a discussion of adorable and sexy celebrities rather than how frustrating the Browns are.

But also, beer is good.
Though that’s not even really off topic here….

would Aaron Hill be an option?
I haven’t read anything about him, so this is just pure speculation on my part, but it seems like the price is low after his injury. That also means that the Blue Jays may not want to trade him and he obviously only had 1 good season. However, he could be worth taking a risk on.
I wonder what the Blue Jays hope to accomplish this year. Not sure if it matters per se in regards to acquiring Hill, but they seem to be in between pushing for contending and not really being a factor yet in that division.
All indications are that the Jays are going to try to win in 09. Aaron Hill will almost certainly not be traded. And if he was, he’d probably command a lot more in value than we’d be willing to surrender. And the Jays probably wouldn’t want prospects, either.
Hill is very, very good.

If the Indians are interested in Hudson, they must feel confident about moving Peralta to 3B. This is not bad if you ask me. Peralta has to go there sooner or later, so why not make it sooner. I’ve heard doubts about Peralta playing 3B, but if he can play SS (below average, but still it is SS), my guess he can handle 3B no problem.
