Maybe when they say, “in the picture”, they mean we are the team that’s walking past sort of awkwardly in the background

You know those guys in news broadcasts who stand behind the reporter and jump around and make faces? That’s us.

Given the state of the Indians’ bullpen last year, I think Fuentes’ agent would not be doing his job if he didn’t at least invite Shapiro over to kick the tires and take a test drive, and maybe establish a baseline offer that he can take back to the Mets.

Fuentes would definitely by an upgrade for the tribe. I’d be happy to get him.

Am I the only one who doesn’t want to spend $12 million on a closer?

I’m serious, one of Meloan/Miller is going to be awesome as the closer. I really think our bullpen will be awesome next year without any huge acquisition.
Awesome. Have I mentioned awesome?

I really think there’s a third “Rafael” out there somewhere to solidify the bullpen. There’s strength in numbers. Plus we can confuse the other team.

I think Jeff Stevens could be that guy, and who knows, maybe Sipp will see some time in the majors this year

+1 – I think Stevens and Sipp could both be surprises and important pieces to the 2009 bullpen, much like Perez and Lewis were to the 2007 bullpen.
Just my 2 cents.

He’d probably be a scrappy shortstop.

I wonder if Shapiro himself leaks our faux-interest in these high profile Free Agents, or if he delegates it to his secretary.

Isn’t it possible Joshua Fields will be available in the draft again in June if the M’s fail to sign him?

just found this tidbit on mlb trade rumors:
Joel Sherman says the Mets also want to speak to the A’s about Huston Street. However, his sources say the A’s feel they match up better with the Indians, Rockies, and Brewers (all interested parties).
I’d much rather trade for Street than sign Fuentes. Obviously it depends on Beane’s asking price, but atleast Street is a young closer who’ll be under control. Fuentes is pretty good, but the money he’s asking for is ridiculous.

You did not find this on MLB Trade Rumors. You found this from Joel Sherman and the New York Post, linked from MLBTR.
This is not difficult.

wow, I just quoted part of an update from MLBTR. The part itself says where the information came from. What’s the problem?

There’s just no reason to cite them when you can simply cite the actual source of the report.
Should I go onto another site now and report that JP_Frost has reported that MLBTR has reported that the NY Post has reported something? Of course not. The NY Post has reported something, the rest of us are just repeating it.

well, without turning this into a big issue, I didn’t see a link to the actual article. So I figured it maybe came from a chat or whatever. Looking back, the article was linked in the part above Huston Street.
I’ll try to be more careful next time.

I didn’t mean to sound harsh if I did.
But look, here’s an example. I found this story on Rotoworld, but I’m going to link to the original NY Post article and say that the Rays seem open to trading Andy Sonnanstine or Edwin Jackson.
In a related story, I’d like to trade for Sonnanstine or Jackson.

Ick, not Jackson.
I’d loooove to get Sonnanstine though.

Obviously they don’t represent the same piece, and I’m not presenting them as interchangeable. There’s still talent there with Jackson in my opinion and he would obviously cost considerably less.
That being said I like Sonnanstine a lot. BenFran+?

I don’t think I’d want Jackson out there every fifth day for a team that hopes to compete in 2009. I don’t deny his potential, but he’s unlikely to be even somewhat-useful in 09, I think.
Unfortunately, the Rays are too smart to accept BenFran, I imagine. They need the same things we do: a middle-of-the-order masher, and a reliever or two.

Positionally they need a right fielder. That’s where I came from.
If the asking price is right I would put Jackson in the bullpen. But I guess so could they.

I understand that, and just to be clear, this is a preference that goes back well before the whole Laffey-is-not-getting-trade controversy. MLB Trade Rumors does not deserve credit for merely repeating a story. In all cases, both the credit and the link should go to the original reportage of a story. The most a link aggregator deserves is a hat-tip in parentheses — if that.

rotoworld on closers situation
Huston Street – OAK
According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Huston Street “drew strong interest from the Indians this past season and is still on their radar.”
The newspaper reports that the Indians “have ruled out nothing in their pursuit of a closer,” and are in the mix for Street, Trevor Hoffman, Francisco Rodriguez, Kerry Wood and Brian Fuentes, among others. “At this point we haven’t determined if anyone is out of our price range,” general manager Mark Shapiro said. “Until it goes there, I won’t assume anything. That would be a mistake. You never know what can happen in this setting.”
