A co-worker is the biggest Cubs fan I know. I walked in this morning and it went like this:
Him: So have you heard?
Me: That we stole your closer? Of course.
Him: He’ll probably get hurt again anyway.
Me: Probably. Or not so much. Probably he’ll just dominate so completely that you’ll cry yourself to sleep.
Him: Yeah. (pause) He’s going to close out the winning game of the World Series against us, you know.
Me: Yes. Yes I do.

I had the same experience.
Me: Thank you Cubbies.
Cubs fan response: Are you being sarcastic? Let’s not forget the long history of health issues. A bad hangnail, he’s out for a month.
It must be their natural reaction to poo poo everything.

Riiiiiiight … because nobody here would ever talk up C.C.’s injury risk after he threw 500 innings the last two years.

Yeah that is true.
By the way, I heard Sabathia has weak knees.

I love how meta this post is. It’s a Fanshot of a comment in a Fanpost that was orginally meant to be a comment in a Fanshot.

The other Wood thread is sinking my battleship, so might as well post here — or start a new official Wood thread.
Of course, some official news would help.

Castrovince is now reporting on his blog that Wood will arrive in Cleveland tonight, for a physical on Thursday which, if passed, will result in a 2 year contract worth just under $20 million.
He also notes that the Tribe also continue to show interest in Putz, in case the Wood deal falls apart.

That last part is a bit concerning.
Dear Kerry,
Please pass your physical. Out of our dreams and into our lives, you are the one.
Just click here if you’re feeling what we’re feeling.

Re-posting from the Got Wood thread
So…next step. Do we trade Shoppach or keep Shoppach?
How do we acquire an IF? Are we actually going to start Andy?

Just to throw this out there… Depending on whether the Red Sox sign Texeira, they could have Lowell to trade. I’m not saying Shoppach for Lowell straight up, but that could be the start of a deal.
Of course, any decision on Lowell will have to wait until Spring Training and he proves that he is healthy.
Additionally, doesn’t Hafner’s health have an influence on this decision?
All-in-all, I don’t know if a Shoppach decision can be made until ST.

That deal would most likely include prospects. Prospects for a one year rental is a no-no.

Quietly, the Brew Crew might be looking for an upgrade over Kendall. Not sure how much more of their farm system Milwaukee would be willing to ship down here, or if we even match up all that well anymore. But it’s a thought.
Boston does seem to have most gaping hole at catcher. And, yes, Bendix, I think I would take Masterson.

KG’s writeup at BP says they still have five four-star prospects — although they also badly need young talent to replenish at this point. Still, that is incredible considering how much top talent they’ve given up over the past 18 months.

If the Brewers truly want a catcher and if they are willing (as was reported on the Goldstein Top 11 Prospects at BP) to trade Hardy to make room for Alcides Escobar, that could be an intriguing start to a deal. Hardy steps in a SS, with Jhonny moving to 3rd. Not sure that Shoppach is enough, but it should be close. Both guys play premium defensive positions with valuable bats and both are potentially expendable for their current teams.

Actually, I couldn’t think of a better WS matchup than cubs v tribe. Winning that series would actually make losing in 07 worth it. Beating the cubs to end the streak and prolong theirs is better than beating expansion team rockies.

Only after beating the White Sox to a pulp in the division, defeating the Red Sox in the ALDS (with PEDroia nearly losing his head to Wood in Game 1), and demolishing CC, Justin and company in the ALCS.

Tell me why I shouldn’t be concerned that Kerry finished 19th in the league in WXRL in between Chris Sampson and Geoff Geary. Is it because it doesn’t have much predictive value? Small sample? Not that great of a stat to begin with?

That, and this Fangraphs post are tempering my enthusiasm. I still going to believe that Marcel is missing on Kerry Wood turning the page as a reliever, and that the Cubs had kind of a weird year in leverage (Marmol came into games with almost as high a leverage as Wood), and maybe its just dumb apprehension, but I’m not ready to jump into the “Wood as killing machine” group yet.

WXRL is really overrated. The say they play the best hits from the 80’s, 90’s and today, but really it’s just mostly stuff that was popular around the time Friends was still on.
