Scratch Nick Punto Off the Available Infielder List
He's back with the Twinkies for $8.5 million over the next 2 years. Yep, that's right, Piranha Punto will be making a cool $4million per for the next two years, with a 2011 option.
Not that he was really ever on our list, but this is money that the Twins can't spend to actually get better.

the bigger concern is that the Twins seem intent on acquiring Beltre to pay 3rd base despite being on his partial no trade list.
Is it just me, or does one year of Beltre look even more appealing now that we have a 2nd baseman who probably needs another year in AAA?
Of course, much like Dunn, this is a mere pipe dream.
Is this really that much worse than $4mil/year for Dellucci?

Yeah, it is. Go back to what we thought of the DD signing the day it happened — now it’s hindsight.
That’s, like, our worst free agent signing over the last few years. This one is typical for them.
I suppose I just have a soft spot for Nick Punto. He’s the only MLer I ever successfully got pulled from a game by severely taunting him into three errors.

Oh most definitely. All I’m saying is I love this signing for the Twins because I get to see Little Nicky 18 times a year for at least two more years.

Also!
You’re right, I remember being fairly pleased with the Dellucci signing. He had put up some good power numbers in limited time in Texas. And there was this one guy on the video game message board I used to frequent who did all these artistic pictures of DD.

I think I remember Rob Neyer saying he thought DD would provide the best value of all the players signed that offseason.
And they let him in the BBWAA. No member of that fine institution would ever write anything as ridiculous as that statement.

Totally,
But there’s no sense in this case making that comparison unless you could be reasonably certain at the time of the signing that those two years would immediately lead to years of .230/.296/.382 and .238/.307/.405 baseball.
Hey. Does anyone else see what I see there? An upwards trend!

Sweet, next year he should hit .246/.318/.428! I smell everyday player!

I wonder if we might target Jack Wilson as a one year defensive stop gag. Of course the pirates would have to quit smoking dope before they make their trade demands.
Still, Wilson seems like a waste of $8 million.
