“Hello, Kerry. How was your trip to Kohl’s?”

Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.

What a deal. CC could buy over 3 million Axcess Polytech™ Jackets—one for every adult man in Finland, Iceland, and Estonia—build a warehouse for them, and still be a millionaire many times over.

as long as its not Old Style

Anti-Ben Fran before it was cool.

I think you have to be wearing khakis and a polo to and ignoring baseball to enjoy Old Style

the only good dive bar in Ann Arbor always had Old Style on tap, and it was cheap, and late in the evening it was tasty

as far as crap beer goes, i’ve had none better than old style. the key is only having one or two. i’ve always said it tastes like the first time you ever sipped your dad’s beer as a kid. which was unpleasant at the time, but when you are reminded of it – in a way only old style can – that it somehow becomes a fond memory.

Or Leinie’s original.

by fleerdon on Dec 19, 2008 11:24 AM EST up reply actions

original is a solid beer. all the others pretty much suck.

by Brick. on Dec 19, 2008 11:45 AM EST up reply actions

Schaffers is the one beer to have if you’re having more than one.

In college, my fraternity bought 21 cases of Schaffers and consumed all but 4 cans over the course of the night as part of the “Schaffers 500.”

by Harry Doyle on Dec 19, 2008 11:58 AM EST up reply actions

Talk about some brews that don’t bottle well. They’re better on tap, but still kind of flat and sugary. Leine’s is one of my favorite summer shandies, though.

by fleerdon on Dec 20, 2008 12:41 PM EST up reply actions

it is actually pretty hard to find OS at wrigley now. there are a few stands and a few vendors, but the vast majority of the beer there is the big boys.

Asked about the thoroughness of the day-long physical, Wood laughed and said, “Somebody asked me about it and I told them, "If every player had to go through a physical like that, there would only be seven or eight teams in the big leagues.’”

Said GM Mark Shapiro, “We pride ourselves on doing on medical due diligence.”

I understand. Drop your pants please Mr. Wood.

Really, we don’t have to, you know, I feel a lot better in this position, maybe I just haven’t been doing enough calisthenics.

by cheech99 on Dec 18, 2008 9:41 PM EST up reply actions

Well then explain to me how in the hell they signed a certain DH/1B with a shoulder injury to the largest contract in the history of the club. When it comes to medical “due diligence” Shapiro’s full of strunzo. And to think, his brother’s a interist!

by mauichuck on Dec 20, 2008 1:39 PM EST up reply actions

Again, there is no reason to think that they didn’t do the due diligence on Hafner, and based on that, we have to assume there was no evidence of an injury. Certainly he didn’t play like a man with an injury in September of 2007.

please move these discussions to the DEAD TOPIC page.

by talonk on Dec 24, 2008 12:25 PM EST up reply actions

“Every free agent pitcher has a level of risk,” said Shapiro. “Inherent in that risk you look at the role, the contract, the amount of the contract, the length of the contract. In the end, if we made a decision to move forward, it’s safe to say we felt comfortable with the risk. Aware of it, but comfortable with it.”

And this is why they signed Wood and not Furcal. He is happy to play here. I like this move.

by oxforddave on Dec 19, 2008 1:23 AM EST reply actions

“It never crossed my mind about switching leagues when I entered free agency. What was important was coming to a solid organization. All I heard was great things about the fans, the front office and everything top to bottom.”
“To have the bases loaded and none out is not the greatest situation to be in,” Wood said. “I look at it as, hey, I’m out here. There were times when I wasn’t sure I’d pitch again. Now that’s pressure.”

Sabathia should take note: this is how to handle a press conference. Kerry Wood is a class act. He instantly replaces the affection I’ve lost for Sabathia. As long as the team is run as it is, its players will be easy ones to like and admire.

Sabathia was a class act for as long as he was here, especially considering how young he was for half his tenure here. I give him full credit.

Having said that, K-Wood said an awful lot of great things in that press conference, both on and off the standard script.
