Indians make offer to Joe Nelson?
cleveland.com is reporting that the Indians are one of the 4 favorites of reliever Joe Nelson. They are also saying that the Tribe has made an offer, but his agent won't provide details.
Hey, if we aren't going to load up on starters, load up relievers. Works for me.

Whose the better/more cost effective reliever? Will Ohman or Nelson?

Also, I’m excited about the possibility of having two relief pitchers named Joe.

whoever this guy is, he has a distinctively New Jersey look about him

And a distinctly “dark seeker” look, too.

Anti-Ben Fran before it was cool.

if i didn’t play in a fantasy league where set-up men were really important, i wouldn’t have…

I admit to being baffled by our continued interest in more FA relievers. I’m still of the opinion we have four young guys (Miller, Sipp, Meloan, Stevens), all of whom have a chance of being good relievers, already fighting for just one spot in the pen. Adding Wood and Smith, good. Anyone else just seems like overkill.

i bet the plan is to let those guys pitch down in c-bus regualarly, rather than mastney themselves into one game a week in cleveland so that when/if we need them, they jump right in…

I think avoiding Mastny-ing anyone should be a goal. Obviously that means putting together a collection of arms that are all atleast within sniffing distance of the COT. I wish Wedge gave more a benefit of a doubt to the young relievers who deserve a little benefit of doubt.

Agreed. I still feel like we move our prospects from AAA to the big league club very slowly which tarnishes the value of the prospects in terms of their ability to help in Cleveland or net something in a trade. But its entirely possible I’m just impatient.
Regardless, I can see why Shapiro is targeting another reliever. Throwing out a couple of million to a this tier of reliever is a low cost high reward move that’s likely to give us more bang for our buck.
Though I wonder, if we should take this as a sign that the amount of money we have in this years budget is smaller than we think.

I don’t have a problem systematically with the way we treat prospects. But I did wish Wedge had given Mastny and Mujica more regular roles in the pen when they came up. Mastny, in particular, had a track record worthy of that.

I guess I see the two as somewhat related. If Wedge doesn’t play prospects, then there’s no reason to promote them. And if they are promoted, it seems like forever before they get a shot.

and surely sipp and miller with both start the year down, don’t you think

Seriously – why are we spending FA $$ on relievers?
Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.

because they stopped accepting FA credit.

It’s smart not to count on Adam Miller for the last spot. But I guess this also blocks Meloan, Stevens, and Rundles. There will be injuries, and the depth will be valuable. If Nelson is signed, I have to believe somebody is getting traded.

Shoppach + reliever + top 10 prospect = ?

The answer had better be Peavy, or I’m not listening.

Lincecum isn’t going anywhere. As for Peavy, I’m sure most people know how I feel about him.

Given the volatility of relievers and especially of relief prospects, I can’t believe anyone can talk about a relief prospect being “blocked” with a straight face. (Maybe you didn’t have on when you wrote that.
Number of Indians relievers by season:
2008 – 17
2007 – 15
2006 – 17
2005 – 12
2004 – 22, including Tim Laker
Let’s not kid ourselves, people … you can’t have enough.
Now, whether this Nelson guy or anyone else is worth spending any money on, that’s another question.

“blocked,” as in, not fighting for an open spot in the bullpen out of spring training (health assumed). shapiro is going to make the young arms an entire tier of depth. on re-read, i can see that i didn’t make myself clear. i wouldn’t be shocked and somewhat expect all those guys, sipp, maybe newsom, and one or two others we’re not even thinking of to join the pen at some point.
as for nelson, he turned down $650K from FL and asked for $800K. now that he’s on the market, maybe he’ll grab a million?

Is that all? At that price, why not? He looks pretty good.

I don’t think Shapiro would do it, but Vic maybe one of the top 5 at 3rd in the AL.

You can never have too much pitching, with our starting staff unsettled, we may need a ton of arm out of the pen.

Looks like the Rays signed him for $1.3 million.
