Randy Johnson signs with Giants
He signs a one year deal worth $8M in his pursuit of that 300 Win plateau.
Sorry, but no in game references of the Big Unit turning to Wood in 9.

If he’s after the wins, wouldn’t it make sense to, you know, NOT sign with the Giants.

The Giants have the makings of a fantastic rotation: Lincecum (2.67 FIP in 2008), Johnson (3.73), Cain (3.85), Sanchez (3.90), and Zito (4.62).
The offense on the other hand will probably not be good.
they’ll win maybe 2 more games all year because of this move. And they’ll have to be shutouts.
And they’ll still be sub-.500.
Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.
If this were any other division besides the NL West, I’d agree with you.

does this mean that Jonathan Sanchez could be traded for? I wouldn’t mind seeing him in an Indians uniform.
Why would this make Sanchez available?

I stand correct. According to Chris Haft of MLB.com, Sabean said the Giants are willing to listen to deals for Sanchez. (But not for a player who’s going to be a free agent after 2009)
I bet Shapiro is all over this one.

Unfortunately it looks like the Giants definetely don’t need a Catcher though so it looks like we’re out of the running unless the Giants will take prospects instead of a young position player.
Sadness.

maybe a deal centered around Garko can be worked out. I know the Giants have a hole at 1st base. It would take some other pieces though.
Garko and Sanchez don’t even belong in the same sentence. And I say that as a Garko fan.

I’m also eager to hoodwink someone on Garko, and if he could be traded for any starting pitcher at all, Great! sign me up.
But do we really want Sanchez? Is he good?
He’s a little off my radar. Like, what hand does he throw with?

Sanchez is a hard throwing lefty who’s fastball averages 91-92mph but can be cranked up to 95mph. If someone could teach him how to throw his changeup he could be amazing.
Here are two great Sanchez articles by Peter.

Thanks, WD. I was about to jump in and say how much of a fan I am of Sanchez, but I’ll let those articles speak for me.
And for those who don’t want to read the articles, it’s probably enough that I simply wrote two articles about the guy (and had to hold back from writing more…)

If they already have a hole at first base, what do they need Garko for?

I know Garko’s 08 season left alot to be desired, but he was pretty good the year before and if the Giants are smart they’d recognize a young, cost-controlled player with upside. However, therein lies the problem — the Giants haven’t really made any smart baseball decisions the last couple of years.
Like I said it would take some other players as well, and it may not be worth it in the end (I read they’re mostly looking for a corner OF’er), but Sanchez is certainly a guy I think warrants some interest from our side.
Not trading Sanchez for Garko would be a very smart baseball decision by the Giants.
Simply put, Garko of 2007 is not worth Sanchez of 2008.
Young, inexpensive, left handed pitchers who can throw 95 don’t grow on trees.
Yes I know you said other players would have to be included, but Garko is not a very good centerpiece for a deal.

so, in other words, Sabean might do it.

Maybe. But I don’t know why the Giants would trade young starting pitching for a bat, when there’s a surplus of bargain bats available in free agency.
I don’t think we even have a bat to trade the Giants anyways. But yeah, Sanchez would be a nice addition in an ideal world.
It looks like the Red Sox are close to signing Brad Penny to a one year deal, according to various sources.
This a very unfortunate development for the Indians, because it takes a potential bargain bin starter off the market, one who I can gurantee the Indians were looking at.
I’m still on the S.S. Ben Sheets though.
Pfft… We wouldn’t top $8M for 1 year? There really must have been no interest in him from Shapiro or vice versa.
I have nothing to base this on, but I think this was sort of a Trevor Hoffman like situation, where Johnson just wanted to stay out west, so we never really even had a shot. Other wise, i can’t imagine why we wouldnt be in on him at the price he signed for. This sort of deal would have been perfect for us.
Who says we weren’t in on him? Just because a free agent signs somewhere other than Cleveland doesn’t mean that Shapiro was asleep at the wheel.

Maybe someone should have posted “SIGN RANDY JOHNSON HE WILL WIN US A LOT OF GAMES HE’S A PROVEN WINNER. THEN WE CAN BRING BACK OMAR AND MANNY. READ THIS SHAPIRO.”

Kevin didn’t say he was asleep at the wheel. He said Shapiro may not have been interested — not the same thing — or that Johnson may not have had any interest in Cleveland, which I believe was the case.
