Cubs fan here. It’s been big news on Cubs boards. Speculation is, we’d send DeRosa over to get some pitching to potentially flip to San Diego for a Peavy deal. Dealing DeRosa/Marquis helps clear off payroll room to allow us to potentially add Peavy/Bradley, and we added Aaron Miles as a utility guy today.

by toonsterwu on Dec 31, 2008 1:01 PM EST up reply actions

If this is the case, shouldn’t we just trade our young pitching for Peavy? Not necessarily directed at you but, in general, you know, Peavy’s good.

by NickFantana on Dec 31, 2008 1:02 PM EST up reply actions

was about to write this exact thing.

Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.

by westbrook on Dec 31, 2008 1:07 PM EST up reply actions

I must say, I like the sounds of DeRosa – with the obvious ‘hope we didn’t give up certain guys’ caveats. I think he’s a good fit. Depending on who emerges/demerges he can move around too.

by Brick. on Dec 31, 2008 1:00 PM EST reply actions

DeRosa has a one year deal worth $5.5M (which fits our supposed remaining $$ for this year).

I doubt the prospect(s) involved would have to be as costly as to what Roberts would have cost us. Although I am not sure how that helps the Cubs in the Peavy deal if we send them a Sowers type instead of a Huff type.

by talonk on Dec 31, 2008 1:03 PM EST reply actions

If we trade Huff, I will sob and consider not going out tonight

by Roger Dorn on Dec 31, 2008 1:04 PM EST up reply actions

San Diego probably wouldn't care for a Sowers type

Just my speculation, but in the last go around, they were looking for higher ceiling youngsters. I’d imagine guys like de la Cruz, rondon, miller, Huff could get speculated on.

by toonsterwu on Dec 31, 2008 1:04 PM EST up reply actions

No way Huff is included as “filler”.

by talonk on Dec 31, 2008 1:20 PM EST up reply actions

This I could live with

yea, depending on what ‘filler’ means. I assume it isn’t Laff, Huff or Atom.

by westbrook on Dec 31, 2008 1:09 PM EST up reply actions

based on the last go around of Peavy rumors

I’d imagine that they’d want an upper level arm, so Huff could be in the mix as a mid-end of the rotation type lefty for San Diego. Just something to keep in mind.

by toonsterwu on Dec 31, 2008 1:10 PM EST up reply actions

but Stevens would be considered the ‘filler’ IMO, in a deal incl. Huff.

Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.

by westbrook on Dec 31, 2008 1:11 PM EST up reply actions

just speculating

but maybe chicago wants to ask san diego who they prefer?

or maybe this is getting leaked out to see if a better offer can come up?

I understand your point, but it’s not as if Huff is that much of a standout prospect that would demanding that much attention (although maybe I’m going to get the wrath of Indians fans for saying that). He’s a nice mid-end of the rotation lefty, valuable, but not someone that may necessarily pop up on radars. His best asset is that he’s lefty and he’s ready.

it was a joke. huff is highly thought of around these here parts

by Roger Dorn on Dec 31, 2008 1:28 PM EST up reply actions

gotcha, sorry first time here today

I like Huff, but not as much as you guys I guess.

Well, we’ll have to wait and see what the final reports are. Chicago rumors/spec suggest/indicate that this might not happen for a couple of days, to give the Peavy trade time to work itself out.

by toonsterwu on Dec 31, 2008 1:29 PM EST up reply actions

This make some sense

Stevens may fill that pen need the Padres are searching for, and add in a minor league starting caliber arm, and that does make some sense.

I will be curious if talks of a DeRosa deal getting close spurs other teams, such as the Twins, to offer something. Could be an interesting side note to follow.

No official word on this at the moment, but the Indians have traded right-hander Jeff Stevens and two minor leaguers to the Chicago Cubs for infielder Mark DeRosa. No word on who the other prospects are the Indians are giving up, but it sounds as if the deal is in fact centered around Stevens.

by westbrook on Dec 31, 2008 1:14 PM EST up reply actions

I’m not sure how long he’s signed for, but DeRosa is 33 yrs old… Valbuena could use a year in AAA… This looks like a good short term solution. Depending, of course, on who we gave up.

by Wahoo25Ben on Dec 31, 2008 1:16 PM EST up reply actions

this allows Valbuena not to be rushed into the job this year, since DeRosa only has a one year left on his deal.

ooc

means out of curiosity. And we wouldn’t need Valbuena THIS year, which I think was everybody’s hope anyway. Besides, Valbuena can still get time at second if DeRosa needs to play the outfield or third base or first base or wherever. This actually makes the Gutierrez trade look better in my opinion.

by jefftribe on Dec 31, 2008 1:17 PM EST reply actions

this is true about his versatility, but if D-R is a short-term solution, we’d really better not be giving up much more than Stevens.

Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.

by westbrook on Dec 31, 2008 1:18 PM EST up reply actions

I suspect it will be an A ball arm, not someone like Huff or Lewis

by talonk on Dec 31, 2008 1:19 PM EST up reply actions

if this is for Peavy

then I doubt it’s an A level arm. If It’s not, then maybe. But the Cubs specifically didn’t want to part with Sean Marshall in a Peavy deal, and the Padres wanted ready arms instead, which the Cubs are thin with at the top.

by toonsterwu on Dec 31, 2008 1:20 PM EST up reply actions

Just an FYI, if we gave up Huff and Stevens, that would be a more fair deal for Roberts than for DeRosa

by talonk on Dec 31, 2008 1:21 PM EST up reply actions

that would be too much for Roberts too.

Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.

by westbrook on Dec 31, 2008 1:22 PM EST up reply actions

Roberts is going to cost more

than Huff/Stevens, IMO. A lot more. A lot of teams would go after a top of the order, 2nd baseman.

Okay, let me rephrase, I think Baltimore would want a lot more, and I think other teams would offer more than a mid-end of the rotation lefty prospect and a pen arm for Roberts.

by toonsterwu on Dec 31, 2008 1:22 PM EST up reply actions

No chance.

Hard to find players more valuable than a pre-arb quality starter.

by jhon on Dec 31, 2008 1:25 PM EST up reply actions

put it this way

Maybe you guys are right, but my guess is that Baltimore wouldn’t do that deal if it was offered to them.

by toonsterwu on Dec 31, 2008 1:26 PM EST up reply actions

It’s hard to figure those guys out

by jhon on Dec 31, 2008 1:26 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

My honest 2 cents, since I'm not an O's fan

is that, if Shapiro could’ve netted Roberts for Huff/Stevens, then he would’ve done it in a second. As valuable as a mid-end of the rotation lefty like Huff may be, you net two potential picks for Roberts and you already have Valbuena in line at 2nd base.

by toonsterwu on Dec 31, 2008 1:28 PM EST up reply actions

Picks are a fickle mistress.

by Brad D on Dec 31, 2008 2:28 PM EST up reply actions

Ok, let me rephrase it then, if we were going to trade a higher level ceiling guy like Huff, it wouldn’t be ina deal for DerRosa, but rather in a deal for Roberts (or Peavy for that matter).

No way Shapiro gives up 2-3 high ceiling prospects for Derosa, just so the Cubs can flip him for Peavy. Shapiro would just flip those prospects to the Padres instead.

Best guess, you get one quality prospect, Stevens, that you can flip for Peavy. You’ll have to find others from different sources.

by talonk on Dec 31, 2008 1:29 PM EST up reply actions

we'll have to wait and see

but we didn’t need Stevens as a pen asset to do a deal with San Diego. We have more than enough pen assets that are similar to Stevens level.

Looking at the defensive stats

UZR has him as below average at 2nd base (-4.2), and above average at 3rd (2.2).

BP has has him as slightly above average at both positions, so I guess overall he’s got a solid, but unspectacular glove.

by JP_Frost on Dec 31, 2008 1:24 PM EST up reply actions

that's fair

DeRosa was slightly above average last year at 2nd. I think 2nd is his best spot, but his best asset is his versatility.

I like DeRosa, but his numbers last year are a tad inflated. He’s not a .200 ISO guy, which was a career high at 33. That normally doesn’t happen and isn’t likely to be repeated next year. His career high in homers were a result of 9 lucky homers, according to Hit Tracker.

by Roger Dorn on Dec 31, 2008 1:35 PM EST up reply actions

The Indians and Cubs have come to a New Year’s Eve agreement on a four-player swap that brings infielder Mark DeRosa to the Tribe.

To get the versatile DeRosa, who will likely move from second base to third, the Indians are giving up three Minor League pitchers — right-handers Jeff Stevens and Chris Archer and left-hander John Gaub.

Though the 33-year-old DeRosa played primarily at second base for the Cubs, the Indians will probably move him to third to avoid disrupting their infield. The Tribe had considered moving shortstop Jhonny Peralta to third and second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera to short.

The Indians did not have to give up a single proven Major Leaguer to acquired DeRosa, who is coming off his career-best season, because of his contract status. DeRosa is entering the final year of a three-year $13 million contract that will pay him $5.5 million in 2009. He is eligible for free agency after the season.

The concept of trading contracts which has a really great understanding around here is still something that is probably not well understood yet across baseball. Someone on a one year deal is just not worth giving up good players that are going to be under control for several years

Though the 33-year-old DeRosa played primarily at second base for the Cubs, the Indians will probably move him to third to avoid disrupting their infield. The Tribe had considered moving shortstop Jhonny Peralta to third and second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera to short.

From mlb.com.

It might just be me, but if Peralta can play an average 3B, I’d very much rather have Asdrubal and DeRosa playing their best positions, SS and 2B, respectively. Our overall defense would be a lot better.

Isn’t DeRosa better at 3B than 2B?

by JulioBernazard on Dec 31, 2008 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

YEA… I think Peralta to third is the right move… altough I am not sure JHONNY is happy about that much….. I wonder if this mean Barfield and minor leaguer for 3rd starter??

by NCTRIB on Dec 31, 2008 1:56 PM EST reply actions

That would have to be some minor leaguer to make that trade.

The best thing probably is to hit [Grady] 2nd -- Jay

Man, it’s fun being a fan of a team which knows what it’s doing. We’re very spoiled.

I envy you all in Cleveland……your GM has been on quite a roll since just before the deadline.

He’s done an admirable job-every one of the players he acquired have something to offer. He fleeced the Dodgers for some nice players-I think Santana and Meleon will end up in the bigs-LaPorta and a ML ready arm, Reyes for nothing you all wanted-and all he had to do was be better than Paul Byrd, so you win that trade too-he was better than Paul Byrd.

I have seen De Rosa play when he was with the Braves and the Cubs-he’s more than adequate in the field and the man can hit. You all are going to love him. Plus he buys you time to sort out the infield.

Impressive, indeed. Kudos to Mr. Shapiro! Give him another week-he’ll have your new #3 starter.

You all have a fun team to watch, even if it doesn’t work out. But it all just might work out….great, great moves.

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.

Anti-Ben Fran before it was cool.

wooooooooo

Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.

In Shap…ya’ll know the rest.

By the way, Stevens is going to dominate the NL and we can’t be upset about that. Roberto Guerillmo Mota is pretty good in the NL.

Especially if he shuts down “what’s his face” in a Reds game :D
