Yokohama was reportedly interested in Mastny’s Indonesian trout right arm. No word yet on holocene slaughter bonuses.
Tomo Masutoni. Comedy gold.
The real question is: can the Yokohoma coaching staff coax out Mastny’s latent Death Ball potential?
They’ve apparently already calculated that he can “throw the ball, long ball” 150 kilometers. Maybe Luis Isaac was fired for failing to make proper use of Mastny’s superhuman trout arm.
This is kind of off-topic, and maybe I’ve been watching too much soccer since the CC trade, but does anyone know if there’s any precedent for baseball teams loaning players out to other leagues a la Beckham to Milan this winter? That’s a high profile example, of course, but moves like that are more often used to get gifted young players extra playing time at a lower level.
I imagine this must be impossible in baseball, or else I’d have heard of it, but could the Indians get, say… Marte an extra year in “AAA” by loaning him to the Hiroshima Toyo Carp or something like that?
I don’t know the terms of Beckham’s loan because I don’t follow soccer, but MLB clubs have often loaned players to the Mexican League. I don’t think you can “loan” a player to the Nippon Professional Baseball (Japan’s league)…the player has to agree to play over there, and then he has to be released from his MLB contract. MLB and NPB do recognize the other league’s contract as valid, so I think a loan would be impossible. MLB teams used to have exclusive working agreements with NPB teams, but those agreements became illegal after the posting system was instituted after the Irabu mess with the Padres, their “working agreement” with an NPB team, and the Yanks. I’m not sure if the working agreement allowed loans, but NPB players used to come and spring train in the US with the MLB team with which it’s NPB parent club had an exclusive contract.
So what happens with the Roster spot?
Does Brown get rostered? Seems unlikely with Aubrey still on the roster. Perhaps this signals moves about to be made and/or the possibility we could pick someone up in the rule 5 draft.
The timing of this seems kind of interesting. I wonder if they’re interested in taking someone in the rule 5…maybe a guy like Alan Horne (who we previously drafted). Or maybe we’re just planning on making a signing or two.
Mujica throws harder and has a strikeout pitch (splitter). Mastny has that curveball and get his strikeouts, but I think his fastball leaves too much to be desired. Best of luck to him, though, if the report is true.
I wonder if Mastny is a good case for what happens if you really don’t have an effective fastball. By most accounts his curveball was the best in the system. But the team had enough doubts about his stuff to move him to the bullpen after being an effective starter, and now to ship him off to Japan.
Plenty of relievers get by throwing as hard as Mastny. What compounds Mastny’s lack of fastball in inability to locate the one he does have. I really think that pitchers who can’t rely on speed need to have a pitch that looks like the fastball coming out of the hand. A curveball is just too distinguishable from the fastball, whereas a changeup or splitter isn’t. That’s just my theory…
I’ve heard of players wanting to play closer to home, but this seems a bit extreme.
You know Selig? Ombudsman.

MANNY.
ORTIZ.
LOWELL.
Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.
The glare. Everybody forgets the walking-off-the-mound glare into the Boston dugout. It was a God damned Clint Eastwood poster is what it was.

I would love to see this. No love from Google and my memory of the moment is hazy at best. Anybody have that game recorded and want to photograph their TV?
i wish. it was epic moment, and hell i’m going back to the game thread now to read what it was like.
Anti-Ben Fran before it was cool.
