Wood as Killing Machine

Was going to be a comment but got unwieldy. I guess treat this as a Wood Appreciation Thread.

0603play-wood-3-650_medium
"You think I juggle well? Should see my heat."

...a fastball once clocked at 102 miles per hour and a devastatingly hard curve/slurve that tumbled a foot in its journey to home plate; Astros first baseman Jeff Bagwell once said of the pitch, "I got no chance." —Buzz Bissinger, NYTimes

In 2006, I knew everything there was to know about building a baseball team; seriously-go back and read my posts. Bullpen was easy-just find some K's and some run suppression and slide them in there. Our roster and minors were littered with future closers: Mastny, Mujica, Miller, Sipp, Betancourt, whoever. I wasn't an idiot and I wasn't going to put on a hooded robe and dance around the stone monolith of Closer Mentality. I was going to meet mysticism with steely realism, just like Shapiro would, and I was going to laugh when what was obvious to me became obvious to everyone: if Bob Wickman could do this job incredibly well, then talented farmhands, proven setup men, and confident fathers from coast to coast could at least do it adequately.

Jamime_medium
Suggested closer for 2006.

I was an idiot. Everything that Tim McCarver says about closers is true. They shorten the game, they intimidate the opponent, they impose their will, they breed an attitude. They're born to parents of hell and brimstone, they drink the townspeople's blood to whiten their teeth, they eat vegetables raw or not at all. In short, they're different. Anyone who has watched the Indians' over the last 3 seasons cannot possibly deny that there is something distinct about closing. Exceptionally talented relievers cannot always do it. That's the fact as I see it.

As a fan, I want a championship more than I want anything; that's the company line and, outside of the liberated fandom espoused at FreeDarko, few are diverging from it. But, if I had my druthers (has anyone seen my druthers, by the way?), I don't just want to see the Indians win it, I want them to do it the way I've always imagined. Intimidating. Dominating. Overwhelming the opposition.

308093128_33eee8f396_medium
The 2008 Tribe's version of "Overwhelming the opposition."

I wouldn't complain if the Indians won 83 games and somehow walked away with the hardware. But it's not what I imagine; I don't daydream about Jamey Carroll winning the World Series MVP or Jeff Weaver nailing down game 5 or Eric Wedge falling asleep at a stoplight, stone cold drunk. No, I daydream about Belle. And Pronk. But mostly Belle. They're part of a group of players that I have (inappropriately) dubbed Killing Machines. This is, admittedly, a rather ambiguous definition; I could say that it's players who can OPS+ over 170 or so, and that would be a decent place to start. I could say that it's pitchers who simply feel sorry for batters, reversing Rogers Hornsby.

Star-divide

I could also say that it's about connecting to other dominating figures: for instance, Belle is our Norman Mailer-he may stab someone but when it comes to his craft he's all power and Olympian ability. I could say lots of things but ultimately I don't know what makes a Killing Machine such. I know that other teams and, especially, other teams' fans are afraid of these players. Extremely afraid. I know that you recognize a Killing Machine when you have one-you cannot talk about this player without smiling. This player is a one-word answer to all of the questions.

Norman-mailer_medium
Oh c'mon. It was a penknife.

It's stupid, nebulous, and it's fanspeak. But, I don't care what Nate Silver says I'm still allowed to be stupid about sports. I'm allowed to let my emotions matter as long as I realize they're my emotions. The Indians have had their fair share of these players in the last 15 years. Belle and Hafner are just my favorites but there's more than a handful of players that I can't even think of without grinning.

Manny_ramirez_medium
If you can't remember him fondly, it's your loss.

If Castrovince is right, Shapiro has added one more to the roster. Kerry Wood is not "sort of good" or a "value signing." Wood's FIP last year was 2.21, a number in-line with Papelbon (2.11), Broxton (2.12), Mariano (2.13), Fuentes (2.26), Lidge (2.31), and Smoltz (2.31). Francisco Rodriguez checked in at 3.14. I'm not going to waste any more time on this point—others are going to more capably point out how incredible Wood is statistically.

I'm talking about how Kerry Wood makes me feel (save it-I've seen about one half of a good boner joke today). I'm going to be excited to watch him pitch. I'm going to feel like the Indians are obviously at an advantage against nearly every hitter. I'm going to giddily tell everyone within earshot that Wood has some of the best pure stuff of all time. I'm going to scream when he gets the third out, not exhale with relief or take my hands from my eyes. I'm going to feel like we have Achilles except his mom remembered to switch hands. And she dipped his right arm twice. Kerry Wood is a Killing Machine.

Bts_03-06_medium
Irving, Texas circa 1977.

In short, Wood makes me cocky. Very cocky. When I tell my kids, I'm not going to laugh and say that Joe Borowski or some other footnote closed out the Game 7 that changed a franchise. I'm going to glare back from under my McCarver-inspired druid hood, steely-eyed and say "Kerry Wood went 1-2-3."

Hey Nick, nice comment.

Since you’re so awesome, you might want to know where to watch some inspiring Kerry Wood videos. Well, here’s some of Kerry’s highlights on hand at MLB.com:

I collected baseball cards between primary school and late adolescence. Kerry Wood’s ‘97 Bowman rookie came out of what might have been the last pack that I ever bought, and it’s the only one I ever enshrined in a hard plastic jewel case. The year after I bought it, I lost interest in collecting cards and I began to give them away. I decided to keep only the Indians and the Hall of Famers, and I included Wood in my final cut. I’m happy to see that he’s part of the set.

Thank you. Excellent.

Seeing Manny there makes me realize that this may be the first time we actually ripped a favorite player from another fan base while he’s still potentially good. Am I forgetting somebody? Justice maybe? I picture thousands of Wood jerseys that are going to stay in Chicago closets for the next few months, until they’re finally tossed out. I’m sure most Cub fans knew that he’d be gone next year, but still had some irrational piece of hope in the back of their mind. Hey, that supposed to be our role.

I don’t remember being on the other side before.

But that’s all just trivia, it doesn’t add or subtract from this.

by dgcambridge on Dec 10, 2008 12:57 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not irrational — I still don’t understand why they let him walk. It’s kind of crazy, considering how expensively they are buying other talent.

I can’t figure this out also. This is the only negative that has been gnawing at me. When something seems to good to be true, it usually is.

Maybe because the Tribune Co. just declared bankruptcy?

by mrich on Dec 10, 2008 11:33 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No, the Cubs business isn’t part of the filing.

Which, incidentally, proves my point in the other post, that the high-spending teams aren’t spending out of their owners’ own pockets. The Cubs owners literally are bankrupt, but Cubs spending has not slowed.

by Jay on Dec 10, 2008 2:11 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

But the Tribune Co. is going to have to sell the Cubs as part of a bankruptcy settlement, and so I doubt they’re going to take on any big new liabilities, like free agent contracts. Seriously, I think that’s exactly why they let him walk.

by mrich on Dec 10, 2008 2:55 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That is exactly my point. The owners of the teams don’t take on any liabilities directly and aren’t concerned about losing money. The high-spending clubs are self-supporting based on higher local revenue. They do not have billionnaire owners who generously spend down their fortune for better players.

by Jay on Dec 10, 2008 3:47 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I’m just saying that when you consider the fact that Hendry’s hands are tied with respect to taking on payroll, their decision to let Wood walk makes sense. I’m not saying I think it’s a good decision — it’s stupid and unfortunate for Cubs fans, clearly — but it was obviously not a pure baseball decision.

(I don’t think the Cubs are “buying other talent”, as you state above. In fact they’re not players at all on the free agent market this offseason, other than kicking the tires on the likes of Milton Bradley.)

by mrich on Dec 10, 2008 4:06 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The FA market is not the only way to take on payroll. You think the Padres are going to pay Jake Peavy to pitch in a Cubs uniform?

Check out their contracts on Cot’s — they have some $25 million in contractual salary increases coming this season, plus several guys hitting arbitration. If they acquire Peavy, their payroll will approach $160 million, more than $40 million higher than it was in 2008.

Laughed out loud, ferreal.

I sympathize with Cubs fans only in that this was their guy, a guy that did great things for them but also fell short of a lot of expectations. This past season had to be a real feel-good situation with Wood succeeding as closer for a great team, and now, for no good reason, he’s just gone.

Me: That we stole your closer? Of course.

Him: He’ll probably get hurt again anyway.

Me: Probably. Or not so much. Probably he’ll just dominate so completely that you’ll cry yourself to sleep.

Him: Yeah. (pause) He’s going to close out the winning game of the World Series against us, you know.

Me: Yes. Yes I do.

Before the Tribe / Yanks ‘07 ALDS I called in a local sports talk show to explain why Andy Pettitte was not, in fact, clutch. I was nearly run off the show, but the host let me talk, and subsequent callers waxed about how sad it was that I didn’t understand what baseball is all about.

I think the record is Dean Chance, with a 116. Wood’s best game (which was, well, you know the one) was a 105.

by FredOx on Dec 10, 2008 9:43 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Odd.

Dean Chance did in fact get a 116 GS in 1964 (going 14 innings) but two sources I just looked up—admittedly one is Wikipedia—say Wood’s 105 is the highest.

Maybe it’s a 9-inning game deal?

Anyway Kerry Wood is good.

I actually got to watch Wood close just this past season at Wrigley. The Cubbies were playing the Brewcrew (pre-Sabathia, and we still had Borowski) and were really mashin’. By the 9th inning, everyone was a little loaded and looking to see the complete pwnage of their cross-town rivals. Wood came to the mound and the place went CRAZY. Of course, Wood shut down the Brewcrew 1-2-3, striking out the last batter. Total insanity. Wood screamed with excitement and the place just blew up. Again, we had Borowski at the time, and I just shook my head in dismay that we could never have a guy like Wood to mop up the last three bad guys.

Guess those days are over.

Bleed Cubbie Blue has a reference to an article in the Tribune following Wood’s first save. (The Tribune article is no longer on line.)

He entered that game to AC/DC’s “Dynamite,” which was apparently picked by the Cubs marketing department. He was quoted as saying, “I’m indifferent, really. ….I’m sure it will be changed at some point,” then noted a preference to have Wrigley organist Gary Pressy “tickling the ivory” rather than music coming over the loudspeakers.

(I like this guy more and more every day.)

Am I the only one that’s worried about having over $31 million sitting on the DL next year?

Westbrook – $10 mm
Hafner – $11.5 mm
Wood – $10 mm

I’m saying it’s definitely going to happen, but I’m just trying to prepare myself for the worst, and be pleasantly surprised if it doesn’t come true.

Well.. I do take one drug now – for fun – and, maybe you’ve heard of it, it’s a new thing, I don’t know if you have or not. It’s a new thing, it makes you small. [ indicates size with fingers ] About this big. And, you know, I’ll be home, sitting with my friends, and, uh.. we’ll be sitting around, and somebody will say, “Heeeyyy.. let’s get small!” So, you know, we get small, and uh.. the only bad thing is if some tall people come over. You’re walking around going, “Ah hahaha..!” Now, I know I shouldn’t get small when I’m driving.. but I was driving around the other day, and I said, “What the heck?” You know? So I’m driving like.. [ extends arms high in the air like he’s reaching up to a giant steering wheel ] And, uh.. a cop pulls me over. And he makes me get out, he looks at me and he says, “Heyyy.. are you small”? I said, “No-o-o! I’m not!” He said, “Well, I’m gonna have to measure you.” They have this little test they give you – they give you a balloon.. and if you can get inside of it, they know you’re small. Now, I’ve already talked it over with the cast – they’ve been working all week, it’s a tough thing to do, come out here live. Immediately after the show, we’re all gonna go out.. and get really small!

Burn on, big river, burn on...

by Turkmenbashi on Dec 11, 2008 10:59 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, there is something wrong with it. Wickman is the all-time Indians leader in Saves, and he put up one or two of team’s best seasons ever as a reliever. Borowski in his “good year” was not as good as Wickman in his worst.

You might as well lump in Trot Nixon with Manny Ramirez.

by Jay on Dec 12, 2008 12:04 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Wick and JoBo were lumped together for one reason – neither was a shutdown 1-2-3 guy. Nobody ever said “uh oh, _ is coming in. It’s game over man. Game Over!” I appreciated, then and now, that Wick could do what so few could do – be a closer. tabler84 & I talked about it in college. I liked Wick. But he and JoBo would give 40,000+ a heart attack every time the got the ball because they weren’t shutdown, 1-2-3 guys. (Simply put, yes Wickman > Borowski.)

So I’ll just take the easy way out and say Turkmenbashi said it best, I’m “looking forward to Wood a lot more than ever did to Wickman or Borowski”

by afh4 on Dec 12, 2008 10:30 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Come on, Jay, I don’t think you’re giving lenred or me enough credit. Of course we realize Wickman was light years better than JoBo. Wood is, however, as lenred says, a potential shutdown guy, unlike Wick or JoBo. Plenty of reason to be excited about him, and simply acknowledging that he will be more fun to watch than those two is not discreditig Wickman’s achievements, at least in my mind.

Were you ever really excited to see Wickman come out of the pen with two guys on? Like, Rick Vaughn Wild Thing blasting on the PA excited? Doubt it. Many of us will feel that way about Wood.

Well, OK then. Agree to disagree. I never felt that way about Wickman. I always liked him, but I feared him.

Well, then, you weren’t paying close enough attention that season. Month after month of real domination. It did take a while to realize just how much he was dominating, but that was equally true of Mesa in ’95 or Betancourt in ’07. Wickman gave up just one run in the final six weeks of that season.

by Jay on Dec 13, 2008 2:59 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Again, fair enough, and you’re probably right I wasn’t paying close enough attention to that season. There was a period when I got out of watching baseball regularly for a while before I found this place and got really into it again.

Plus Wickman was, and I never felt like he was dominating. As we know, baseball is all about feeling. Wood will dominate. I can feel it.

he pitched 62 innings that year with 41k and a 1.26 whip. the final 6 weeks he pitched 15.1 innings ceding 10 hits and 5 walks, striking out 15. in his 5 appearances prior to the 6 week mark, he blew a save and gave up the only run in a tie game for the loss. one could probably be forgiven, if during those last 6 weeks of 2005, one didn’t notice wick had become joe nathan on a bad day.

They let me get away with way too much, probably. But I choose my targets carefully. Every morning we’re contractually obligated to run an Oprah and Rachel Ray 1-minute recaps. I loathe Rachel Ray with a fire that can be weaponized. So every morning I rip her in some fashion, and I’ve had viewers write and say, “Thanks for making me laugh every morning at that egotistic woman…”

Never seen The Godfather of The Godfather II? (You can skip part III, I know I did.)

How is that possible, don’t you get A&E or AMC on your cable network? One of those movies is on one of those networks every third night, between showings of Pulp Fiction and The Shawshank Redemption. (In fact one of them ran The Godfather on Thanksgiving day, which may have been a bit too much)

You would have to be actively avoiding those movies to have not seen them.

Challenged her to explain whether she thinks that, given the housing crisis, it’s a good idea to tell her followers that she and Joel bought a dilapidated house in a bad neighborhood and doubled their money because they asked God if he would help them flip it for a profit.

Guys, it’s on the website. Here’s a link, and I encourage you to watch until the end.

Also, I put a couple of blog posts up about the affair, but our not-so-awesome software kills blog posts after one month. Long story short:

I was very cordial to Victoria. I asked the questions in a straightforward manner. We were given three minutes, but I ran long and I knew they were going to pull the plug; my producer was begging me to wrap in my ear. And I’m not going to shout at her during the interview; viewers can make up their own minds.

After the interview, the head communications director for Lakewood Megachurch sent me an angry, sarcastic email. His name is Don Iloff.

I wrote about the exchange in a blog post titled “Megachurch Rips Me,” but only after I responded to Mr. Iloff and he ignored my response. It sucks that I can’t pull the blog post up, but aha! Via google I’ve found a website that apparently caught wind of the whole thing and blogged about it. It includes excerpts from my blog post.

You can check it out here.

Obviously the megachurch was claiming that I was wrong and that the Osteens had never said God wants people to be rich. In my follow-up email and blog post I referenced a handful of videos in which Joel and Victoria specifically tell their church that God wants to take them to higher places financially. At one point Joel says that struggling with money is not the “victory” that God intends for followers.

The church never responded to these points and my subsequent questions.
