Schilling may be hurt

There are numerous reports that Curt Schilling has a serious shoulder problem and may even be lost for the season.  Full story here.  If true, it is just another reminder of the importance of having pitching depth. Of course, the Red Sox do.

Let's hope they decide to give Julian Tavarez another 23 starts this year.

Mm.  Will the Yankees counter by giving Pettite a strained hamstring?

Re: Schilling may be hurt
Turmoil in Bean Town.  Perfect!  Maybe now we can dangle El Gugundo in front of them for Buchholz and Ellsbery.  Kinda like Coco Crisp.  But then again we might end up with another Marte.

Re: Schilling may be hurt
It's a combination of poor conditioning and poor mechanics, similar to what led Hafner to get surgery on his arm after the season.

Re: Schilling may be hurt
Rather selfish of Schilling to want to sit out a year with surgery, while getting paid by the Red Sox.  This is a no-win situation for the Sox.  I can't imagine Schilling pushing himself extremely hard to do the rehab when he preferred to get the surgery.

No big deal for the fans.  Most in Boston are happy that Buchholz will now be in the rotation, and don't care if Schilling doesn't pitch until August.

Re: Schilling may be hurt
I can't judge how selfish it is without knowing the physical demands of the two medical options.

Whatever Schilling's faults, he seems to have some integrity and certainly some competitive pride.  He'll pitch this season.

Re: Schilling may be hurt
Many of the fans are positioning it as Schilling telling the Red Sox: "Let me have the operation this season while you are paying me $8 Million, and I hope to return next season."

You're right about his competitive nature - I still get goosebumps from his 1993 postseason with the Phillies.  And taking 4 months off at the start of the season can leave him fresh for the pennant race.

Re: Schilling may be hurt
By the way, I disagree with the idea that this doesn't hurt their depth.  Their rookie pitchers aren't automatic machines, they're unpredictable rookies.  They are going to find themselves a starter short at some point in the season.

Re: Schilling may be hurt
Yep.  The Red Sox and Yankees have no worries as they enter the season with two young stud starters on their staffs...  Not only would these guys be number 2s on most other teams, they come cheap!

Re: Schilling may be hurt
I am taking from this comment, you think Keith Law is overrating the Red Sox prospects.  The notion that Red Sox prospects are overrated within the scouting community strikes me as bs.  Who is it that you think has recieved unwarranted praise?

Re: Schilling may be hurt
I still think he may have negotiated his contract in bad faith. It was odd how he signed pretty quickly at a slightly below market price.

If the Red Sox manangement knew of this condition, the contract probably would have been for less with more incentives built in.

Re: Schilling may be hurt
They say they gave him a medical exam before signing the contract.  (I don't know what constitutes a medical exam, though)

An extreme-flyball, left-handed pitcher, with failing stuff, in Fenway.

Re: Schilling may be hurt
I thought lefties did better in Fenway, no?

by Jay on Feb 8, 2008 10:46 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Re: Schilling may be hurt
Well, conventional wisdom is that Fenway favors right-handed hitters, because of the Green Monster in LF and the fairly deep dimensions in RF.

This article in The Hardball Times concludes that the conventional wisdom is right.

Typically, a LH starting pitcher will face more RH hitters than a RH starting pitcher would, because of platoons and switch-hitters.  If RH hitters have an advantage, then a pitcher facing more RH hitters is at a disadvantage.

Re: Schilling may be hurt
Interesting.  It looks pretty solid, and your inference about pitchers seems logical enough.  That said, their research really didn't look at pitchers at all, only hitters.  The word "pitch" isn't even in there.

Re: Schilling may be hurt
I heard this news while on my way to a board meeting for the little league that I'm involved with.  I walked into the meeting late and - in the midst of a heated discussion about whether 7 and 8 year olds should play together - made the off handed comment to the Sox fan in the crowd, "sorry to hear about Schilling ..."

The look of confusion and concern on his face was priceless - my little dig into Red Sox Nation. :)

From the reports I've read, there was difference of opinion between the Red Sox' doctors and Schilling's.  They settled it with a consult with a third doctor.  From what he posted on 38 pitches, Schil seems satisfied.  While he wouldn't disclose what surgery his doc wanted to do, he stressed that it was not a rotator cuff repair.

If that's true, and the intended surgery was minor, it seems that the media is trying to make more of this than there is.  He would probably be back by the All Star Break either way.  Certainly, the Red Sox have enough arms to get them to that point without him.

Re: Schilling may be hurt
Don't worry, guys!  The Sox are going to be ok.  According to the Globe (courtesy of MLBTraderumors.com), CC Sabathia is an option for them to fill out their rotation midseason if Schilling doesn't work out.

Re: Schilling may be hurt
Apparently those young pitchers are good enough to be worth "proven" starters, but not quite good enough to actually pitch for the Sawx. After all, who wants to deal with the inconsistancy of young pitchers?

Re: Schilling may be hurt
What was that wholly unsubstantiated speculation supposed to mean?

(a) the Indians will be so bad they'll trade C.C. before the deadline

-or-

(b) C.C. won't sign a long term deal and will go into the free agent sweepstakes after 2008.

If it's the former (and the Indians are that bad) wouldn't C.C's performance probably be a part of that, so why would you want to trade him?  If it's the latter, how is it relevant to the 2008 season that Schilling will be missing from?

I've gotta send a resume to The Globe.  I have no qualifications in journalism, but apparently, that didn't stop Nick Cafardo from getting a job there.

Re: Schilling may be hurt
But I thought the Red Sox were about to be priced out of the pitching market?
"We'd better enjoy [Josh] Beckett the next three years," one Boston Red Sox official said, "Because we won't be able to sign him after his deal is up after 2010."

(I really like Gammons, but letting himself be used to float the Red Sox "poverty" balloon yet again made me lose a lot of respect for him.)

Oh, and here's another peach from Adam's article:  "The Sox really didn't want Santana, not for the outlay of young talent he would have cost."

Re: Schilling may be hurt
This is why Gammons is such an effective tool for them. He plays up the prospects so much that I think some other GM's actually buy into the hype. Pedro Martinez for Tony Armas, Carl Pavano and a third that I can't remember?

Re: Schilling may be hurt
But Gammons gushes about every team and player that he personally likes.  Does it for the Indians all the time.

Re: Schilling may be hurt
It's really certain GM's who cause Gammons to gush. He has never lost his New England prep schooler's reverence for the Ivy Leagues, so Epstein and Shapiro are halfway to brilliance on alma mater glow alone.

Another way to earn Gammon's approbation is to provide him with off-the-record information. I would bet that Epstein and Shapiro are frequent chatters with Gammons. It's not totally one-sided, however. Gammons may reveal what he has heard from his A's and White Sox sources. It's not a big edge: most of it comes out on ESPN a day or two later anyway.

Speaking of pitchers I dislike, Keith Foulke signed with the A's today, apparently.  I hope Hafner hits a 500 foot homerun off the guy on his first pitch to the Tribe.

Re: Schilling may be hurt
As satisfying as that would be - I'd rather he sit on his butt though every game the Indians play against the A's.  Meaning they have such a lead there's no need to put Foulke in.
