A place for J-Mike?
The Cubs are looking like a reasonable trade partner for Jason Michaels. Of course, just because a bunch of people here think he should be traded doesn't mean the Indians are seriously exploring it. Still, I think you have to assume it's on the table.
According to this story, Felix Pie is doing a good job of challenging for a starting job in CF, but the Cubs continue to explore other options. Coco Crisp is getting mentioned -- is this because the media is name-obsessed or because the team is? -- but the story says they'd like to have a righty bat as a platoon partner, and to provide depth if Pie struggles.
Marlon Byrd would also qualify and might be available, but it seems like a damned good fit for Michaels over there. If Pie wins the job, the Cubs will have lefty starters in CF and RF, where Fukudome has the job, and depth guys Fuld and Patterson are also lefties. The lone righty in that mix is Murton, who some believe is likely to be traded in a package for for Brian Roberts.

Re: A place for J-Mike?
Most likely it'd be a position player prospect of middling C+/B- value, right? I'd be fine with that, as the main upside here is clearing out space for Ben Francisco to "breakout" in BP parlance.
Re: A place for J-Mike?
I can talk him up all I want, but I think the Cubs, and others, recognize what Michaels is. I'm not saying it's probably, but I don't think the Indians should start by inquiring about less than the likes of Ronny Cedeno (who'd make Jamie Carroll's '09 option unnecessary), Michael Wuertz (the guy Jorge Julio was supposed to be), or, more realistically, somebody like minor league starter turned reliever Kevin Hart, or Jose Ceda, a hard throwing right-handed relief prospect who'd figure in at Kinston to start the year.
Just a few suggestions, and perhaps the first two are more wishful thinking than realistic. But in dealing guys like Michaels, the Indians need to find other organizations' Maicer Izturises and Ryan Churches.

"The Mariners had flirted with adding a veteran right-handed hitting outfielder, but club officials apparently are satisfied with the four players competing for their final outfield spot -- Wladimir Balentien, Charlton Jimerson, Mike Morse, and Jeremy Reed".
Please, please, please...can we make another trade with the M's where we trade a platoon player for a "blocked" young player in their organization?

And in any event, if Choo gets healthy and Dellucci, Michaels, Gutierrez, Sizemore, Blake and Marte all remain healthy, then somebody is going to have to go. I don't think anyone in the front office is going to claim that there's enough room on the active roster to have seven guys playing those four positions.

But if not, I think we can be pretty confident that someone (maybe more) out of that group of seven will work himself out the bottom by either injury or failure.
I think another reason why J-Mike could be a
Hello everyone,
As rick mentioned, he has a club option for 2009, so his greatest value could be right now, since he would belong to the team he would be traded to beyond this year.
Granted, I wouldn't give him away for nothing or for peanuts (i.e. some weak, older-relative-to- league Minor Leaguer with virtually no chance of being useful,) but if a solid value deal came along for him, I'd certainly consider it, since I think Francisco could fill most to all of the role Michaels is doing now (despite the somewhat debatable splits Francisco has in his hitting statistics) in the very near future, if not even be more of a factor than Michaels has been (i.e. Francisco will play more often than Michaels has and will likely provide more power than Michaels has.)
Just my 2 cents. :-)
