A place for J-Mike?

The Cubs are looking like a reasonable trade partner for Jason Michaels.  Of course, just because a bunch of people here think he should be traded doesn't mean the Indians are seriously exploring it.  Still, I think you have to assume it's on the table.

According to this story, Felix Pie is doing a good job of challenging for a starting job in CF, but the Cubs continue to explore other options.  Coco Crisp is getting mentioned -- is this because the media is name-obsessed or because the team is? -- but the story says they'd like to have a righty bat as a platoon partner, and to provide depth if Pie struggles.

Marlon Byrd would also qualify and might be available, but it seems like a damned good fit for Michaels over there.  If Pie wins the job, the Cubs will have lefty starters in CF and RF, where Fukudome has the job, and depth guys Fuld and Patterson are also lefties.  The lone righty in that mix is Murton, who some believe is likely to be traded in a package for for Brian Roberts.

Re: A place for J-Mike?
Could a J-Mike trade be the best outcome ever for a case of testicular torsion (which Felix Pie has to have minor surgery for)?

Re: A place for J-Mike?
That seems like a good fit, as I for one would much rather have Michaels than Marlon Byrd.  I am wondering if this isn't a situation where what we get back is of marginal importance, as long as we feel like we get value.

Most likely it'd be a position player prospect of middling C+/B- value, right?  I'd be fine with that, as the main upside here is clearing out space for Ben Francisco to "breakout" in BP parlance.

Re: A place for J-Mike?
I don't think you have to settle for that kind of prospect.  Michaels still plays good defense, performs as advertised against LHP, and is signed for peanuts ($2.15M in '08, $2.6M club option in '09).  He's not a fringe outfielder/failed prospect just trying to cling to a job.  He's an ideal fourth outfielder.

I can talk him up all I want, but I think the Cubs, and others, recognize what Michaels is.  I'm not saying it's probably, but I don't think the Indians should start by inquiring about less than the likes of Ronny Cedeno (who'd make Jamie Carroll's '09 option unnecessary), Michael Wuertz (the guy Jorge Julio was supposed to be), or, more realistically, somebody like minor league starter turned reliever Kevin Hart, or Jose Ceda, a hard throwing right-handed relief prospect who'd figure in at Kinston to start the year.

Just a few suggestions, and perhaps the first two are more wishful thinking than realistic.  But in dealing guys like Michaels, the Indians need to find other organizations' Maicer Izturises and Ryan Churches.

Re: A place for J-Mike?
Michaels is raking right now. I'm not sure if that's an argument for or against trading him.

Re: A place for J-Mike?
I'd prefer to see the Indians be the team to put together a package for Roberts (moving Droobs to ss and Jhonny to 3b), but if that's not going to happen, okay, let's send Michaels to the Cubs. You're right, it would seem to be a perfect fit. If I were the Cubs, I'd certainly prefer Michaels to Marlon Byrd.

Re: A place for J-Mike?
Oh, it's no big deal.  It's just I've had this running joke that I love Matt Murton and we should totally trade for him.  You should look his stats up some time.  You'll probably have to look very deeply  to find things you like. You might find that he's a hard worker and you'll love him.  You might even ask him out via text message.

Wouldn't the Mets be another possibility for J-Mike now that Moises Alou is already in mid-season form in Spring Training (i.e., injured)?

Re: A place for J-Mike?
I'm still holding out hope that the Michaels "situation" is resolved by something that Rosenthal reported:
"The Mariners had flirted with adding a veteran right-handed hitting outfielder, but club officials apparently are satisfied with the four players competing for their final outfield spot -- Wladimir Balentien, Charlton Jimerson, Mike Morse, and Jeremy Reed".

Please, please, please...can we make another trade with the M's where we trade a platoon player for a "blocked" young player in their organization?

Re: A place for J-Mike?
As much as I'd like to keep Michaels and deal Dellucci... if the Mariners want to talk...

Re: A place for J-Mike?
A FO friend gave me a credible argument yesterday for keeping JMike.  My thought was that they BenFran needed to be a plan B in left AND right but that rotating Blake in to left took care of that.  Their thought is that JM has the ability to be a true platoon and backup.  He can sit for a week, roll off the bench and play good D and whack lhp.  Ben Fran probably can't do that and needs consistent AB in Buffalo in case Gutz is a mirage or neither part of DeMichaels pans out...

Re: A place for J-Mike?
I can see it, but it isn't much more convincing than the sign-Kenny arguments.  That is, I believe completely that it's a real plus, but how big of a plus is up for debate.

And in any event, if Choo gets healthy and Dellucci, Michaels, Gutierrez, Sizemore, Blake and Marte all remain healthy, then somebody is going to have to go.  I don't think anyone in the front office is going to claim that there's enough room on the active roster to have seven guys playing those four positions.

Re: A place for J-Mike?
I think you start rotating Blake and J-Mike into the last bullpen spot.  Then it's 7 guys for 5 spots.  Plus you have 8 bullpen guys instead of 7.  Not to mention the fact that if there's an automatic Circle of Trust member......it's Blake.

Re: A place for J-Mike?
I'm all for trading Michaels if we can get something useful in return.

But if not, I think we can be pretty confident that someone (maybe more) out of that group of seven will work himself out the bottom by either injury or failure.

by dgcambridge on Mar 12, 2008 2:51 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I think another reason why J-Mike could be a
logical trade partner is the fact that I really can't see the Indians keeping him long-term (i.e. beyond 2009.)

Hello everyone,

As rick mentioned, he has a club option for 2009, so his greatest value could be right now, since he would belong to the team he would be traded to beyond this year.

Granted, I wouldn't give him away for nothing or for peanuts (i.e. some weak, older-relative-to- league Minor Leaguer with virtually no chance of being useful,) but if a solid value deal came along for him, I'd certainly consider it, since I think Francisco could fill most to all of the role Michaels is doing now (despite the somewhat debatable splits Francisco has in his hitting statistics) in the very near future, if not even be more of a factor than Michaels has been (i.e. Francisco will play more often than Michaels has and will likely provide more power than Michaels has.)

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

May the Tribe be great in 2008! :-)
