Game Thread: March 17, 2008

Lineup:

Cabrera
Dellucci
Peralta
Martinez
Garko
Francisco
Marte
Snyder
Lee

The annoying electronic hum on XM went away just in time for the start of the game.  Drubs starts it off with a hit.  Dellucci gets the walk to follow.  Good times.

i couldn't agree more, but he is constantly having "i shoulda been outa this inning next thing you know 5 runs are on the board issues"  what was that game where the spring training umps were squeezing him?  "Waaaah, It's not my fault!"

Re: Game Thread: March 17, 2008
I thought Cliff made some pretty good pitches - he should have been out of that inning before any runs scored. Delucci watches a ball trickle out of glove, over his wrist and onto the grass. Marte makes two ole plays where he turns his back completely to the play and sticks out his glove hoping fried chicken will fly in it. An infield hit that dies behind the mound.

Cliff ain't no Santana, but that inning wasn't his fault - he was putting his pitches pretty much where he wanted them.

Yeah I see that. He's still at what, like 5 walks in 7 innings? I don't really care how sexy his stuff is or how many K's he gets. His walk rate is ridiculous, especially when comboed with his career HR problem.

Re: Game Thread: March 17, 2008
Gutz has presumably engaged in fun clubhouse banter (not playing today).  Cabrera's 1-3 with a BB.  Marte is 0-1 with 2 BBs and from the accounts above, some questionable defense (though no Es).

Re: Game Thread: March 17, 2008
Yeah, I think that's really been the case all spring. I was just hoping that he would actually "win the battle" as opposed to being handed the job by default. It didn't sound (only listened to the game today) like he was helped much by some shitty fielding, so maybe he didn't pitch as poorly as the line would indicate.

Re: Game Thread: March 17, 2008
Elarton will not start for us, barring catastrophic series of events such that would have us out of the race.

I like our lineup, but it's not the 1999 lineup, meaning, we can't go through 45 pitchers and still make the playoffs.

Re: Game Thread: March 17, 2008
but i DO want him to take the last spot in the bullpen.  and i'm fine with Julio, too with the worlds shortest leash.  I like having Mastny and Francisco with options in buffalo - whatever they deserve or not.

Re: Game Thread: March 17, 2008
"The world's shortest leash"...but that sounds like a choke collar (or Wedge's hands around Julio's neck).  And I thought that was what we were trying to avoid...

Re: Game Thread: March 17, 2008
well, i think there's a way to use a guy like julio, and it's not necessarily how he's been used in spring training - and it's probably not what we need.  if we need a long man, i'd go with elarton and mastny waiting till he or someone else needs replaced (or injury).  if we need a 1 inning guy, i think julio would be useful, again with mastny waiting by.

say you go with masnty.  fultz sucks and gets RHA'd.  someone else gets hurt.  i just don't like the two or three deep as well when masnty isn't one of them.

Re: Game Thread: March 17, 2008
I agree, we shouldn't pretend we have quite the same young stable of just-about-ready power arms in Buffalo that we did a year ago -- in 2007, Perez and Lewis were among our depth guys.

And just an aside, isn't it unbelievable that J.D. and Ferd-Cab totally bombed out, Oldberto wasn't much better, JoBo was shaky all season and we still ended up with an effective bullpen?  It's hard to believe it was only nine months ago that J.D. and Cabrera were on the team, that just seems like a whole different era.  Now we have new, young, talented guys, not just live-armed dudes who suck for four years off and on.

As for Lee, I think either he sticks with an adequate #4 guy line or he goes on revocable waivers pretty quick.  If he's claimed, we likely work out a trade with the claiming team, and everybody goes away happy.  If he's not claimed, we stick it out with him for another month and then try again if need be.

I would not rule out that at some point, he sucks bad enough but gets claimed anyway, and we stick his contract on the claiming team.  But I really think the likeliest thing is that he does okay, and the next likeliest thing is the claim-and-trade.

Re: Game Thread: March 17, 2008
Sorry, foggy-headed moment ... obviously if he's not claimed, he goes to Buffalo and sulks.  Speaking of which, are the Reds dumb enough to trade for this guy?

Re: Game Thread: March 17, 2008
Just think -- we're busy debating who's going to be the last guy in our bullpen, while Todd Jones has a 14.85 ERA for Detroit this spring. Always remember: it could be worse.

Re: Game Thread: March 17, 2008
But look at it this way - we're counting on two key cogs of our pen to be pitchers who have less than a full year of service time (combined?), Joe Borowski, Raffy B to have another insane year, and someone who's never thrown a pitch in MLB. Oh yeah, and Fultz.

I'm always going to be worried about the pen, until Facebook Boy and Stick Figure turn out to be real.

Re: Game Thread: March 17, 2008
Perez has more than a year of service time, actually.  Jensen has 80 days.  Oh, hell, here's all the pre-arbitration guys:

2009 arbitration class
Shoppach - 2.021 (that's 2 years + 21 days)
Carmona - 1.169 (will be a 2009 Super 2)

2010 arbitration class
Barfield - 2.000 (must spend < 60 days in the minors in 2008 to reach in 2009)
Garko - 1.091
Gootz - 1.080
Mastny - 1.070
Marte - 1.038
Perez - 1.028

2011 arbitration class
Sowers - 1.012 (must spend < 70 days in the minors over 2008-2009 to reach in 2010)
Mujica - 0.159
Lewis - 0.080

2012 arbitration class
Francisco - 0.071 (must spend < 125 days in the minors over 2008-2010 to reach in 2011)
Laffey - 0.058 (must spend < 110 days in the minors over 2008-2010 to reach in 2011)
AstroCab - 0.055 (must spend < 105 days in the minors over 2008-2010 to reach in 2011)
Lara - 0.054
Slocum - 0.038
Snyder - 0.031

All days-in-minors thresholds are estimated but are pretty close to the mark.
