Fultz to be DFAd; Lee the fifth starter

Link

The Indians informed Fultz on Monday morning that he will not be a member of their club this year, despite the fact that they exercised his $1.5 million option for 2008. And in a more anticipated move, the Tribe has also named the left-handed Lee its fifth starter. Aaron Laffey and Jeremy Sowers have been optioned to Triple-A Buffalo.

Recently acquired Craig Breslow will get the first opportunity to replace Fultz as the second left-hander in the bullpen. The Fultz DFA will open up a spot for Jorge Julio or Scott Elarton if the Indians choose either for the last spot in the bullpen.

Re: Fultz to be DFAd; Lee the fifth starter
W/r/t Fultz, this means that if somebody else keeps him on their major league roster this year, they pay him the minimum for his service time, and the Indians are responsible for the balance of his contract, right? Anybody know what the minimum is for a guy with 8 years service time? I'm guessing it's like $550k or something like that. So Shapiro just blew around a million dollars to have a look at Fultz in ST. Oh well, not my money.

Re: Fultz to be DFAd; Lee the fifth starter
That also presupposes somebody actually keeps him on their major league roster. Given how awful he's been, that's by no means guaranteed.

Smell ya later Aaron Fultz.

Re: Fultz to be DFAd; Lee the fifth starter
So Shapiro just blew around a million dollars

AND CASEY BLAKE GETS 6 MILLION!!!!!!! and if you trade dellucci and micheals you save 5 million or whatever and we can pay it to CC.  comeon people, we're really obsessing too much over these nickels and dimes.

Re: Fultz to be DFAd; Lee the fifth starter
The Fultz DFA will open up a spot for Jorge Julio or Scott Elarton

seems like one thing keeps leading to the next.  i think jay's right about elarton heading to buffalo and julio to the 25-man.  mastny gets featured, regular work in buffalo a phone call away.

Re: Fultz to be DFAd; Lee the fifth starter
Have to take a bit of issue with the phrasing. The spot for Julio has been there since the Lara move, Fultz's spot just went straight to Breslow.

Re: Fultz to be DFAd; Lee the fifth starter
technically, given the sequence of transations, Lara's spot went to Breslow.

and Lara's spot doesn't affect the 25-man.  only fultz opened a spot there.

Re: Fultz to be DFAd; Lee the fifth starter
The Indians started ST with a full 40-man roster.

Juan Lara outrighted (39)
Craig Breslow claimed off waivers (40)
Aaron Fultz DFAd (39)
Unidentified reliever (probably Julio) added (40)

So while Breslow is probably going to take Fultz's spot on the 25-man roster, he took the 40-man roster spot vacated by Lara.

Re: Fultz to be DFAd; Lee the fifth starter
technically this is correct, but I think mario's point is that in all reality Breslow was given Fultz's spot as a lefty reliever on the major league team.  I don't really see how this effects the competition between Julio/Elarton/Mastny for the last spot in the pen.  I hope its Julio with Elarton and Mastny going to AAA, but we'll see, as soon as Tuesday according to the PD article.

Fultz's numbers obviously sucked this Spring, but I'm assuming this also means the coaching staff felt his "stuff" sucked too...

Re: Fultz to be DFAd; Lee the fifth starter
Rumors are that Ed Wade is prepared to part with Hunter Pence in exchange for Aaron Fultz.

Says Wade, "Veteran middle relievers with spotty track records can be the linchpin to any mediocre team.  Stockpiling mediocrity ensures nobody remembers for any significant period of time the names of the pitchers I entrust to break the confidence of my starting pitchers and my team's fans."

More solid work by Shapiro.

Aghhh! - "between" = "around" in my post, supra.

(The other lawyers here may get that one.) It was a long day in Court.

The best part of the Fultz sandwich deal is that the to go order comes with a free 25 man roster spot.

Re: Fultz to be DFAd; Lee the fifth starter
I don't want to speak for Jay, but Fultz now has 3 straight years of a FIP a bit under 4.00. I know he's strictly a matchup guy now, but he has pitched pretty effectively. He has 9 WSAB total for the last 3 years, and 3 last year. Half a million per WSAB is a pretty good deal, even for your 6th reliever.

Re: Fultz to be DFAd; Lee the fifth starter
Speaking of fantasy teams ... in my AL draft last weekend, I took a flyer on Mills with my last pick (we get 6 minor league spots). Only problem is I only get to keep him if he plays in a major league game prior to September 1st. I don't think it happens ... but hey it was my last pick ;)

Re: Fultz to be DFAd; Lee the fifth starter
Am I the only one who hopes that Elarton is the final arm in the pen?  He's not a bad guy to have around and he seemed to overachieve in the past with the Tribe.

As for Fultz, I'm kinda glad to see him go.  I've been rather 'meh' on him for quite a while now, as I think many have been.  He's never annoyed like some other players, and I wish him well as a waiver wire pickup someplace else, but...  It's a good thing to free up the space.

And as for Lee making the team, I just hope this is some sort of ruse to up his value so we can trade him.  He's just standing in the way of promising arms.

Now that the Bedard bandwagon has officially crashed into the Maritime Seas, solely the local "Barfield Bounces Back Believer."

Re: Fultz to be DFAd; Lee the fifth starter
He has been just brutally bad since the latter part of 2007. I attended the Tribe game in Kansas City this past season when Fultz walked in the winning run. I'm glad to see him go. He's worse than Danny Graves (well maybe not that bad) but still...

Re: Fultz to be DFAd; Lee the fifth starter
You know, I think the Tribe determined that Fultz was in a big time decline and didn't feel like waiting around to double check.

Jay showed convincingly that Fultz wasn't as brutal as we all remember him being; however, I still like the "upside" of a real LOOGY in game situations vs. Fultz projected decline.

Nice, subtle, FO move that will probably come in handy. Vintage Shapiro.

Re: Fultz to be DFAd; Lee the fifth starter
I mentioned it in the game thread, but during the broadcast today they showed a clip from the Shapiro news conference explaining the Fultz move. The one thing he stressed was that Fultz hadn't really been the same pitcher since his injury last season. All of our breakdowns on this site have looked at last season as one large body of work that may not look too shabby, his stats after being out for the month of July are pretty grotesque.

If the FO truly does see Fultz never having recovered physically/mentally/stuff-wise from that injury, his August/September stats plus his horrendous spring certainly gave them ample reason to cut ties with him. I was certainly of the opinion that it was a tad premature to let him go right now, but presented in the context of post-injury struggles, I have to consider myself converted.

Re: Fultz to be DFAd; Lee the fifth starter
The main difference in August/September is in his BABIP.  That doesn't rule out a drop in real ability, but it makes it a lot less likely.

Re: Fultz to be DFAd; Lee the fifth starter
One has to admire that the organization recognizes a sunk cost, even if it's not a huge one. It was the right decision to pick up the option, and the right decision to let him go.

I can't believe our FO thinks that a bullpen's second lefty is some kind of interchangeable part. So disappointing - my Fultz jersey is worthless now.
