Wow. Franklin just had one of the best ABs I've seen him have against righties. Man, if he can turn it up this year to be merely above average vs. RHP, he's gonna be a monster in 2008.
What an AB.
He ended up lining out to center. But he had only 1 bad swing through the entire AB, which included 4-5 foul balls after a 2-2 count. I have been used him throwing away ABs by not laying off crap when he was down two strikes.
Sizemore needs to walk more? Ummm..... I'd like for that to happen, but it isn't exactly a weakness of his. Who are these idiots? I just tuned in.
Typical moron broadcaster talk ... they're marveling about the fact that nobody has ever heard of Victor ... when they should be marveling about their own ignorance, as apparently the only two guys who don't know about Victor Martinez.
I mean, seriously, Victor's got the idiot stats, what's it going to take?
And now they're talking knowledgably about the Indians 6 and 7 starters. That's just weird.
That is painful.
You know what would be truly exciting is if they designated three games every Saturday of the season to be broadcast through the dumbass FOX Sports blackout.
So is Hammy on depressants or something? That was the flattest call I've ever heard him make for an exciting play.
Grady made a diving catch. Hammy did his usual words - "Grady running it down and he - DIVES AND MAKES THE CATCH! Oh, what a play by Sizemore! And now he and Kotsay both have a spectacular catch out in center in this game..." but he delivered it in a comical monotone.
We need to get Francisco in LF. I'm convinced that would be the fastest outfield in the known universe.
Francisco is not an awesome defender, he's just 24 and perky.
Who you really want is Van Every (now in Boston) or Snyder or ... what's that other guy we got ... oh yeah ... Jason Michaels.
That does it. Brad Snyder '08. I'm making a flag.

Just hit a short-but-legit line drive up the middle with a broken bat, 3-0 count. I haven't watched the whole game, but I thought the broadcasters said he'd hit every ball the other way tonight.
Jay, I just re-read the "Whither Pronk" piece. Here's something I'm (possibly irrationally) afraid of: DiamondView believes the 60-degree line from PECOTA, but also thinks that Travis Hafner's extension is going to be on par with that level of production?
In other words, is there a chance we're paying the 60-degree Hafner -- call him '07 Pronk+ -- about what we think he's going to be worth?

In that vein, I wasn't able to find the instructions for posting images by searchingthe database. Could I get a refresher?
I don't really understand your question.
I think the Indians did the extension based on a mean expectation of Hafner somewhere in the neighborhood of PECOTA's 75th percentile (that's what the "degree" symbol means in this case) multi-year projection. At that level, Pronk would be something of a bargain. I'm not sure where you get the 60 out of my piece.
If he's at the 50-60 level, we've essentially bought ourselves a cheaper version of the Carlos Lee contract, i.e., it's no better of a value than the big, dumb free agent contracts. Added to which, there's a certain probability that this will be Pronk's best season from here on out, and unless his slump was 100% mental, we didn't need to extend his deal to get that season out of him.
That's because it was a bad question (60 was just me ball-parking it, both poorly and lazily), but you answered it anyway. The more accurate question would be -- for what we're paying, how much SHOULD we be getting out of Hafner?
Also! I'm familiar with statistics, but I had forgotten that notation. Thanks for clearing that up for me.
For a while, I was buying what I call, perhaps inaccurately, the Underwood Theorum: Hafner was bothering by the increasing use of the shift against him, and trying too hard to take the ball to left rather than hit it where it was thrown. But after taking a peek at the Pitch f/x data ... he was just flat-out missing sliders in and change-ups away.
Ultimately, my (hypothetical) money's on DiamondView, but you're on the mark about the general queasiness I have on the topic. Can't we just find out if he's okay and get on with life?

Probably not.
Incidentally, as for Underwood Theorem vs. just flat-out missing, why can't it be both? Can't he be flat-out missing sliders in and change-ups away in part because he was bothered by the shift? I mean, if he's materially bothered by the shift, that would have to manifest itself in the form of missing some pitches more often.
/Furrows brow.
You caught me shooting from the hip. My understanding of the physics of hitting is too rudimentary to make those sorts of pronouncements. Gives me an idea, though.

Hello everyone,
Somewhat encouraging by Hafner tonight, though I hope he can consistently put up quality ABs, have some 2- and 3-hit games, etc.
bewwolv - I'll take doubles hit hard the other way too, in addition to what you are mentioning! :-)
I suspect the fact it's Friday night and the NCAA Tournament is going on - Davidson(!) and Texas have both advanced (over Wisconsin and Stanford, respectively,) with Kansas up 19 at the half on Villanova and Memphis up 30(!) on Michigan State at the half - is why the game thread is sort of quiet tonight. Plus, they're probably waiting to get "wild" on Monday! :-)
Just my 2 cents.
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
One negative about Hafner tonight though - 2 more strikeouts. I hope he keeps his strikeouts in check this season, as I believe he also had one 3-strikeout game within the last week. At times in 2007, his tendency to strikeout repeatedly and on horrible pitches was maddening. If he can make improvement on that this season, he should have a considerably better season and more consistency like he did from 2004-2006. Hopefully, it happens!
Just my 2 cents. :-)

Hello gahnki,
I didn't have that in my bracket either, though I'm not totally surprised after Davidson took out Georgetown in the second round. I actually had Wisconsin taking out Georgetown in the 3rd Round, but neither part happened (Georgetown doesn't get to Round 3 and Wisconsin loses in Round 3.)
With all due respect to Dick Vitale, I bet he is very surprised that Michigan State isn't even in the game against Memphis (Dickie V thought Mich. St. would win that game) - right now, it's 61-31 Memphis, and they're doing virtually anything and everything against Mich. St., while Neitzel has been a total non-factor (I think he still hasn't scored with 14:40 left in the 2nd half.)
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
And beat them by 18 - it never got under a 15-point lead for Memphis (I believe,) and I think Memphis lost some of their concentration after the lead ballooned to 34 points, which was arguably the main reason why MSU went on a 17-0 run to cut it down to a 17-point lead.
As mentioned on CBS, some analysts thought Memphis was a prime target to be the first #1 seed knocked out, especially after MSU ousted Pittsburgh, but that was certainly NOT the case tonight.
For the record, Neitzel finished with two late 3-pointers (when Anderson wasn't guarding him) for 6 points, but that first 3 didn't come until around 1:49 left in the game. That was another major reason why MSU lost - without Neitzel being a factor, MSU's chances of winning this game was near zero.
Just my 2 cents. :-)
