Cubs Spring Training Injuries

So I logged onto MLB.com because I'm bored and wanted to see the time for the game today and read the article Soriano suffers fractured finger (he's only out 3-5 days).  Anyway, at the end of the article they list all the spring training injuries so far:

The Cubs have had a variety of injuries this spring. So far, infielder Mark DeRosa was hospitalized with an irregular heartbeat, pitcher Jose Ascanio had a bruised face after getting punched in a robbery attempt, and outfielder Felix Pie missed a couple of days early because of a twisted testicle.

What is going on in Cubs spring training?

Re: Cubs Spring Training Injuries
Actually it was probably torsion of the testicle - a not uncommon condition that's usually corrected with manual manipulation.  Let the hilarity ensue.

Re: Cubs Spring Training Injuries
testicular torsion is my favorite injury to ask my recently doctorized friend now that he's in his residency. He has yet to see one.

Happened to Larry on an episode of Curb (so it has to be true).

"Ya got some long-@ss balls larry. Long-ball-larry."

As General Manager of this team, I demand to know when I'm getting a start.

In a related story, only Kryptonite hurts Matt Murton.

Would you just ask him out and get it over with?
I swear, next year is it.

I haven't checked this diary out in a while and therefore am late to respond to this.

I can't explain the man-crush.  I just can't.  I am infatuated with minor characters that can just snap and become super-producers.  I believe Murton is one of those guys.  I also carried on about Ambiorix Burgos and David Aardsma for a while until our bullpen got overstuffed.

And I know gaining Murton would only create more problems with our outfield, but I believe he's the best option for left right now and where to trade the remainders would be of little concern.  In a market like Cleveland I guess the Murtons of the world stand out to me.

To answer your question, he hasn't texted me back in like a week.

Don't you fret, you'll get to see more of Matt. Problem is he'll be playing for the Orioles rather than us. He is most likely in the package that gets Brian Roberts to Chicago.

Re: Cubs Spring Training Injuries
I don't know, the guy has over 900 big-league AB now, the great majority at ages 24 and 25, and the career OPS sits at 820.  He isn't much like Crisp, but just as with Crisp, you have to ask yourself at some point if that isn't basically what he is -- in his case, a solid-average hitter with little defensive value.

I look through his minor league numbers and see a guy who did well at age 23 in Double-A.  That says to me, very good prospect and probably a solid major leaguer, but unlikely to be an impact player.  Remembering again that guys like Peralta and Marte did the same thing at age 20 rather than 23.  Sizemore at 23 was putting up those numbers in the majors.

For what it's worth, PECOTA doesn't think much of the guy at all -- only marginally better than Dellucci in 2008, and you have to consider that this compared projection is coming off a truly disastrous season for Dellucci.  Less than 50/50 to be a starter beyond 2009, and less than 20% to be a star at any point beyond 2008.

Time to fall out of love?

Re: Cubs Spring Training Injuries
Matt is one of those guys that made me look very deeply at the stats (read: skew in my favor) to find things I like.  I'm not looking for a superstar.  I'm looking for 24 home runs, .870 OPS's, and good left field D from a single solitary cheap player.  I just think he's one of those "give him a starting job and we'll see" guys.  I know what the numbers tell me.  I know it's hypocritical to expect differently.  I know she cheated on me before, but she said it would never happen again.  Love is blind.

And anyway, for the last two months or so it's partially been about carrying on the joke.  But I still like Matt Murton.

He is a hard worker and you will all love him.

Re: Cubs Spring Training Injuries
Oh, yeah, who was that guy?  Reliever coming over from Seattle, right?

I understand it's a particular kind of crush -- you're into him because he's reasonably attractive and seems attainable.  But that modestly nice production you hope for is not just well above his mean projection, it's right around the 90° mark.  Just so you know.  I worry about you.
