Latest Farm Report with Ross Atkins!

Hello everyone,

On the latest Farm Report, Ross Atkins talked about two players in particular:

3B Wes Hodges - had 7 RBIs, a go-ahead Grand Slam that turned out to be the game winner against Binghamton (NYM,) and a clutch 2-run single up the middle after a quality, tough at-bat.  He's also playing good defense at 3B.  The main points with him are to continue to get him to focus on the process and not think he's ready for the Majors right now.

LHP David Huff - he's progressing at the rate the Indians thought he would.  His command of his three pitches has improved; is doing well after a good stint at Kinston and in the Arizona Fall League.  The Indians will reevaluate him after 5-6 more AA starts to see where he is at, so it sounds like a possible promotion to AAA Buffalo is not out of the question if he can demonstrate he's ready over the next 1-2 months.

Hodges had another homerun this afternoon, as well.

Sure, but does he really think we’re going to give him a free pass on that crappy walk rate just because he’s slugging 740?

If so, he has sadly underestimated us.

What’s he supposed to do with baseballs that have ‘HIT ME’ written all over them? Walk for the sake of walking? If its there, KILL IT!

p.s: I reserve the right to retract these comments if Jay was, in fact, being facetious.

NBR (No Borowski Run): Refers to that run which puts the Indians up by 4 over an opponent, thereby drastically reducing the chances of Joe Borowski pitching in a game.

Of course I was. If he did it for a full season, one might how that’s going to project. But when the ball’s begging to be hit hard, you hit it hard. Even our patience-loving hitting coaches would say that.

I wish someone would explain why Lofgren is worthless.

total lack of control

Well, ok.

I kind of meant, you know, why. Though I guess if they knew he wouldn’t be having the problem.

Me, too. The mystery is that he was dominating at Akron this time a year ago. Since then, he’s been worthless.

No offense, Andrew, but who said Lofgren was “worthless”?

I’ll admit I have some concerns about him, and worry he may never have good enough command to reach his ceiling, but admittedly, he’s still young and could find it. It’d be nice if he could put some solid outings together and gain some consistent command, but I certainly wouldn’t call Lofgren “worthless.”

ASP mentioned Hodges; I mentioned in the game thread that Huff had this line from Wednesday night:

5.0 IP/4 H/2 BB/8 K – not bad for a guy who wasn’t striking out too many (SSS understood.)

Just my 2 cents. :-)

Umm. I don’t think I meant it to be taken literally. I don’t want Lofgren to be put to death or anything.

FIRING SQUAD LOFGREN!

Hello Andrew,

Sorry – I didn’t mean to make it sound like you got that from the report I provided. I was only curious as to whether you heard someone say “Lofgren was worthless” or not.

No, I highly doubt Lofgren will be “put to death” any time soon. As mentioned above, I have some concerns about him, and his early season command struggles are not helping allay my concerns, but certainly, it’s too early to give up on him (remember that we didn’t give up on Guthrie or Dan Denham too quickly, and I’m not sure either had the ceiling Lofgren did, though Guthrie probably was close, and finally did turn out. Still, my point is that if we waited that long on them, we’ll certainly wait that long on Lofgren unless some MAJOR deal that improves us immediately came along.)

In other words, I wouldn’t worry about Lofgren falling into the “mists of oblivion” at this point. He does have work to do, though, to make sure he stays out of the “mists of oblivion” down the road – let’s hope he makes progress in his next start. :-)

Just my 2 cents.

He probably got some sage advice from CC this offseason.

I’m doing this as a test, in an old post, to see if I’m doing this right. Sorry.
