He caught Carlos Baerga’s first pitch last night, so he needs an off day so we don’t wear him out.

Boy, the last third of our lineup is just terrifying. Here’s hoping the other six guys decide to hit something.
In fact, a lot of somethings would be just peachy.

i want to be positive, but i just feel like we haven’t hit bottom yet. i think i’ll bow out of this one.

Just got out my Tribe hat. Wearing it proudly. It’s been missing for about a week, but it’s time to focus.
Good idea. I think I’ll put on my road grey jersey, last worn the day we beat Oakland.

i may as well address this here:
i would rather have benfran playing than michaels. and i understand that michaels is not hitting the ball at all, at all right now. but we’re putting a lot of energy into crucifying a guy over 33 ABs, and the only reason he has that many is because he subbed for Gutz while he had the sniffles. 16 of those ABs are against righties, who he isn’t even supposed to be playing against (i know, his splits in limited ABs this year against RHP are better, but man, he has an .091 babip against LHP, give the guy a break).
i think we should be saving our disapprobation for the players who really deserve it. i wont say his name.
I’ll trade a short night for a good night from Fausto. Obviously we’d love to see some efficiency, but I just want to see him settle down and throw.
If Carmona doesnt walk guys and stays around the zone, he’ll make up for it. This lineup isnt terribly patient, and he pitches to contact.

Is there a chance umps are squeezing the zone across the league? I’ve been noticing a lot of walks lately from lots of pitchers. Only random observation, not comprehensive, and certainly no explanation for CC’s troubles. Just wondering.
Hey, there are two Indians players on the base paths. What are they doing out there?

I’m gonna call foul on this one. We’re down right now, but there is talent on this team. You can’t look past Grady and Victor, Gark is coming on, and I definitely still have faith in Asdrubal and hope for Gutz. This streak sucks; our players, not so much.
I know. I like this team. I am still confident. But I’m allowed to be an asshole during times like this.

Why are we throwing at anyone. We need to fucking win a game before we decide to make any statements.
With all due respect, eff that. This team needs to light a fire, and so be it if it involves plunking some guys. I agree with underpants, that pitch from Verlander seemed a little too deliberate. Remember when Looch got up in that guys face last year?

You don’t think winning some games might “light a fire”?
While the Tigers and Indians are comparing dick size the White Sox and Royals are winning games.
Fuck this. If we’re that obsessed with it, hit somebody in the 9th. Don’t hit someone in 6th in the middle of the goddamn lineup.
Seems the Tribe is always laaaaaazy in April. I want to see them come out with some piss and vinegar and swagger. When Hafner dropped his bat after that homerun in Anaheim? Beautiful. Chirping at the ump? Means you care.
In sports, when you’re fiery, it means you have passion for the game. Kellen Winslow II? Love the kid. Huuuuuuge mouth, huuuuuuuuuge passion.
I still hate PEDroia though. Noun that verbhole.

I can’t defend the HBPs on a strategic basis, and I’m the last to buy into the whole psychology of the game, but it was appropriate to hit ONE guy. It’s good to know your coworkers are with you. Being a sport, things like this are often resolved through aggression.

My point was that Garko is, to my eyes, so good we’re never going to want Brown. I can’t imagine Brown turns out better than Garko. He is living at the ceiling for his type of player and Brown is exactly his type of player.

It’s not a claim. He played there a bunch in lower levels; it’s in the box scores.
However, everything I’ve seen is that he’s a butcher more or less. And, if he’s not playing it in AAA, the Indians pretty clearly aren’t considering it for an MLB position.

We’ve got almost a season and a half on Garko at this point, plus an easily recognizable and repeatable plate approach that fits the Indians style. I’m totally convinced that, at the least, Garko’s a 120 or so OPS first basemen and that’s pretty damn good.
On top of that, Brown is the kind of prospect anyone should feel relatively confident projecting. Guys like that don’t explode.
I don’t know, you never know what can develop, or frankly, what can go wrong. I’d want to see some combination of Aubrey and/or Whitney and/or Mills going strong for half the season before I shipped Brown off, not that I would call him untradeable. Plus, he is a lefty, which might be a better fit long-term.
But I can also see Garko/Brown as a Bard/Shoppach thing, where at some point we’re shipping off Garko to play the younger, cheaper guy with less service time and basically the same quality. But none of this comes into play unless Brown really emerges in a big way in Buffalo.
One could argue that Garko is good at getting HBP. Right?
/pushes buttons.

The cheapskate charge against Detroit ownership, which they’re discussing on STO, isn’t entirely without merit.
If all the owner is willing to spend on is big, shiny trinkets, that too is a problem. Steinbrenner for years has skimped on the bullpen, and it’s cost them, and it’s dumb.
Most unserious commentators would say that. Harold Reynolds used to talk about the Twins that way all the time, and you could just see the look on Ravech’s face, no time to stop and explain the economics of the game to this guy, it’s not like he comments on baseball for a living anyway, except that that’s exactly what he does for a living.
Do we think Steinbrenner is really cheap? Or is this the only place where Cashman was able to keep some modicum of control and he screwed it up?
Because, it doesn’t make much sense to spend big money on relievers in most free agent markets anyway does it?
Maybe not big money. But some teams seem like they don’t know and don’t care who will be in the bullpen if it isn’t their closer.
Some GM’s read LGT and take advice from Crazymoloh.

I dunno. They actually had a really impressive bullpen for years, with that 8th inning guy. Who was that? Hernandez? And then he pitched for the Red Sox?
They do make moves to address the bullpen, as opposed to trying to throw out farm arms or something (see: Farnsworth) but they get more success where everyone seems to, in weird retread players like Scott Proctor.
Well, I’ve always said, there’s no real evidence Cashman is particularly good at any part of his job other than suffering humiliations at the hands of the Steinbrenner.
And in this area as in others, they sign one big, stupid contract - Steve Karsay was one in a series - and don’t do the real grunt work to develop a full staff, let alone depth. Remember how pathetic their pen was in the playoffs?
Yeah, it’s bad. But if we work from the place that pens are the truest test of a team’s farm depth, then there’s really no conceivable way to have a good pen with no farm right? And Steinbrenner morgatged the farm.
I mean, the Orioles made every effort to buy a pen. It just didn’t work.
But I guess the Red Sox have been sort of ok at buying a pen. Though, at this point with Delcarmen and Papelbon it’s sort of homegrown.
Hmm. I’m wondering how closely we could correlate pen success to good farm systems. Think there’s an r-value there?
Didn’t just mortgage the farm, he screwed up the whole development program by prioritizing putting a winning team in Tampa every year.
Yeah. And I’m thinking maybe farm = bullpen. I’m obviously having my opinion heavily influenced by the Indians of the past few years, though.
farm = bullpen when one of the core strategies is to grab up every quality arm you can find without relent, every week of every year after year after year. When you do that … some of them become good relievers, yes.
O hai, I figured it out.
CC is giving Fausto a head start for the CY young award this year, since he stole votes from him last year.

What the consensus (assuming one exists) here on what’s causing C.C’s troubles?
NBR (No Borowski Run): Refers to that run which puts the Indians up by 4 over an opponent, thereby drastically reducing the chances of Joe Borowski pitching in a game.
oh noez. Are you doing that just to bother me?

i love that vic is putting together an at bat like this when the team is up 9 runs in the 7th inning.
has there been an indian in my 27 years who has been more the heart and soul of his team than martinez?
Good pick. I had a terrible mancrush on Omar Vizquel, myself.
--
Right now, I'll take .500 and run. I'm a cheap happy.
I loved Omar, but I can’t give him a leadership position after the way he tried to negotiate his contract through the media. A team leader would never, ever do that, and Omar wasn’t one.
I was pretty unimpressed with him about that, too. Seemed like he daydreamed to a reporter about what it might be like to play in some other town practically every day of the 2007 season. Classless.
In like 2005. I guess Hunter actually tried to punch him.
From this Strib article.
Morneau’s achievement capped a season that saw him erase many of the doubts that surfaced in 2005.That year, he hit .239 with 22 home runs and 79 RBI, as the Twins missed the playoffs for the first time since 2001. Hunter was so disappointed with Morneau’s attitude, he threw a punch at him toward the end of that frustrating season.
I’d back Alomar, but he spent too much time off the team, on the DL, to be its irreplaceable core the way that Victor has been.
FWIW, Bobby Jenks just blew a save in Baltimore. 5-5, Orioles still batting, running on first, 2 out, bottom of the 9th. Orioles have scored two in the 9th so far.
poll: Orioles, for real or not?

OK, I admit it: I don’t know who Catfish Whosawhatsit is. Anyone want to let me know what the radio fellas are talking about?
For the record: thank you to all of the people in self-imposed exile, whose absence made this game possible.
Yes. No hesitation.
