Game Thread: April 2, 2008

Chicago White Sox @ Cleveland Indians

Gametime: 7:05 (STO)

The gametime temperature is going to be in the low 40s, which means we'll probably be seeing a lot of pulled grounders from Chicago hitters. Last year, the White Sox gave Fausto a lot of trouble, posting the highest OPS (.790) against among AL Central teams.

The Indians haven't made a move regarding Victor Martinez, but I seriously doubt he's playing tonight, especially with it being this cold [Ryan].

Looks like Detroit is going to go 160-2 this season.

by crazymoloh on Apr 2, 2008 4:06 PM EDT   0 recs

They have to play the Royals 16 more times though .. so I am predicting 144-18.

Can't wait for tonight, man. Good friends, girlfriend, brats with Bertman's mustard, and nice frosty case of FAUSTO.

LET'S GO TRIBE!!!

Burn on, big river, burn on...

Moms gave me a whole bunch of Bertman's the other week, and a couple bottles of this salad dressing I've only found at Heinens. It's called Garlic Expressions; it goes great with mashed potatoes and buns, and salad of course.

God I love food.

Dude, Garlic expressions ROCKS. What time you gonna be over?

I realize very well that I could regress to the mean.

Cool article .... so now can we get the SABR guys to calculate BABIP per pitch count? That would be some cool information to have.

If Detroit is going to score 1000 runs, how many do they still need with the *cough* 2 runs per game they've started with?

Sports writers are starting to jump off the Detroit train and to blast their pitching staff. I don't know if I should be happy or angered that they might be trying to jinx the Tribe.

As long as Steve "Kryptonie" Phillips doesn't jump on our bandwagon, we're fine.

by crazymoloh on Apr 2, 2008 4:45 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I still get a kick of the Broadcasting paragraph on wikipedia. I wouldn't be surprised if he still predicts the Kitties will win the AL Central in November.

by kova on Apr 2, 2008 5:42 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I did this for both playoff series, and I'll do it whenever I have time during the regular season.

I think one of the best predictive stats is how an individual pitcher has done against an individual hitter (Thome crushing CC Monday notwithstanding). Here are the notables for tonight (I arbitrarily decided that anything under 10 ABs is too small of a sample size, even though we are dealing with outrageously small samples as is):

vs. Vazquez

Blake: 5-20; 1 2B; 2 BB; 10 Ks
Dellucci: 7-21; 1 3B; 1 HR; 3 BB; 3 Ks
Garko: 6-15; 1 2B; 1 HR; 4 Ks
Hafner: 2-16; 1 3B; 2 BB; 4Ks
Martinez: 3-18; 1 2B; 3 BB; 2Ks
Peralta: 3-17; 1 BB
Sizemore: 5-24; 2 2B; 1 3B; 4 BB; 10 Ks

Vs. Carmona

Dye: 5-12; 2 2B; 1 HR; 5 Ks
Pierzynski: 4-11; 2 2B; 1 K
Thome: 3-12; 1 2B; 4BB; 2Ks

by DaytonDogg on Apr 2, 2008 4:41 PM EDT   0 recs

I'm surprised. So you think, for example, that Dye's 5 for 12 (.417) against Carmona better represents his probability of getting a hit than his 2007 average against righties (91 for 378 .241)? Not that batting average would even be the best predictor, but seems to me better than small face to face averages. I always laugh to myself when I hear announcers give those.

by FranklinScott on Apr 2, 2008 5:16 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Actually yes. And I think it proves itself as sample sizes grow. For example, Peralta can hit lefties pretty well (.831 OPS), but he has no chance against Santana (3-28; 22 Ks). The lefty/righty thing is good for generalities, but as a logical and practical matter, it presupposes that a lefty sees all lefties equally bad, but some guys just don't pick up the ball as well versus others.

Also, so much of a pitcher versus hitter is a mental game, and once you got a guy in your head and can keep you guessing wrong, you are going to have a more difficult approach.

I know the sample size is always a problem, especially with young guys, but I think it is as good as anything, and at least underrated as a stat by some stat guys.

Mauichuck,

Is there any truth to the rumor of Foy Choo heading to Hawaii to play football at UH?

by Sockalexis on Apr 2, 2008 5:41 PM EDT   0 recs

I've read that in the Maui News but I haven't heard anything about him enrolling and he would have to enroll by May, I think, to be eligible to play this year.

"the most vehement Yankee-hating guy I know" - Jay

by mauichuck on Apr 2, 2008 5:51 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I'll be watching Dellucci closely tonight, because I'm not sure he got a fair shake last year. I'll also be watching Gutz and Hafner who I believe could be our two best sluggers...

I wake up in the morning and look at the clock only to find that it's "Tribe Time"

by Justin Higgins on Apr 2, 2008 5:54 PM EDT   0 recs

Hafner is definitely our best wind generator.

by Gradysmanldy on Apr 2, 2008 5:57 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm watching All Bets Are Off and I agree with Drennan; Hafner had the 2nd most RBIs of all American League DHs last year. You're going to complain about that? Really?

I wake up in the morning and look at the clock only to find that it's "Tribe Time"

"the most vehement Yankee-hating guy I know" - Jay

by mauichuck on Apr 2, 2008 6:00 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

You still didn't address my point. Are you going to complain about 100 RBIs on an OFF YEAR?

I wake up in the morning and look at the clock only to find that it's "Tribe Time"

by Justin Higgins on Apr 2, 2008 6:02 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

He's mainly complaing because the contract we gave him is for 130+ RBIs, not 100.

I agree he had an ok year, just not a Pronk year. It is what it is ....

by talonk on Apr 2, 2008 6:04 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

If he can drive in 100 runs no. But then again he didn't look that hot in the play-offs and didn't look to good in ST. I'm thinking Vic, Garko and Gutz - not sure what order - would look pretty good in the middle of the line-up and bat Hafner in the lower half and then only against righties.

"the most vehement Yankee-hating guy I know" - Jay

by mauichuck on Apr 2, 2008 6:05 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Don't hold your breath with Hafner. If he comes back great, but I don't think that the season is gonna depend on him.

Gutz is gonna flat tear it up this year. Dellucci is, in my opinion, just too damn fragile.

I'm lookin' for Garko to get some power and Astro to keep it up - maybe even improve by the end of the season.
