Westbrook to the DL, Francisco called up
The Indians are calling this a "intercostal strain" [edited to remove comment regarding abdominal muscles]. Somewhat worrisome is that an abdominal injury was what sidelined Lee last year and had lingering effects throughout the season. Good news is that this temproarily creates a spot for Francisco, I would imagine that Laffey will be up within a week or so to make a start for Jake.

Would it be foolish to hope that Ben can spark this offense? If so, I am a complete fool

Would it be foolish to believe that Francisco will actually play?

Intercostals aren’t abdominal muscles, they’re the muscles which run between your ribs. So it’s more of a rib cage strain than an abdominal strain.

Blech. I was hoping that if anyone got sent to the DL, it was CC. I’m curious to hear more details about how/when this happened—he didn’t come out of his last start in pain or anything, right?
Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.

The FanShot speculated that this was something that could have happened/been discovered throwing between starts.

Hooray for two threads! It immediately becomes a battle to see which thread gets more comments. The FS has a head start but this one is SO much more visible. Yay!!!

APV – so this is different from the injury Lee suffered last year?
by millionairesrow on Apr 22, 2008 2:48 PM EDT 0 recs
yeah….Lee suffered an oblique strain (if I remember, right), one of the group of muscles which comprise your abdomen. The intercostal muscles are higher, but are similar in that they form several thin layers of muscles, but in this case connecting between your ribs. I would tend to think intercostal strains would be less severe if only because a lot less motion is associated with the intercostals than the abdominals. But I’ll refer to one of our M.D.s (“money doctors”) on that point…

I assume they will throw Laffey at KC on his normal start day Thursday rather than hold him over to Friday or Saturday (on FOX) vs. the Yankees.

The usual recovery time for this thing is 4-6 weeks (according to medical websites).
