Sizemore out of the lineup. Dellucci leading off. Gutz in CF.

What? Isn’t his consecutive game streak on the line?

He did seem to pull/hyper extend something in the 9th inning yesterday. Would a Sizemore injury explain the Snyder call up? I don’t see how, but that’s all I have.
NBR (No Borowski Run): Refers to that run which puts the Indians up by 4 over an opponent, thereby drastically reducing the chances of Joe Borowski pitching in a game.

Yea, it is. But keeping him healthy is more important than some streak. He turned his ankle yesterday, and it must be sore. Explains the Snyder callup…

He still stayed in the game. Let’s hope it’s not that serious.
As for the Snyder callup… that’s just weird. Even if you needed an emergency OF, you’ve got the Blake/Marte/Carroll switcheroo

is it me or have Wedge and Shap seemingly forgotten Blake can play the OF?
The Disabled List just called ... it was trying to unload Joe Borowski. I offered a bagel but balked at giving up a ham sandwich. It wanted to keep Westbrook.

Well, I imagine playing the field (at a major league level) isn’t exactly like riding a bike. Blake had to do A LOT of work in the offseason before he played OF. Now that he was penciled in for the year at 3B, he didn’t see ANY time in the OF during spring training.

I can only hope that there’s something about Blake in the OF we don’t know, because if there isn’t, then it seems like a huge and stupid mistake not to have him ready to play there.

You know, I looked at Blake’s career splits by month yesterday. He seems to peak in April and June and fall off pretty dramatically from there. So might this support your theory that Marte is going to start seeing regular time in the early summer; i.e., the Indians figured they’d only need a few months of Casey Blake anyway? No? Grasping?

I know, I know. And that’s why Grady’s out… he’s not selfish. Just saying it’s cool to have guys that are that durable, but not to the point where it gets detrimental to the team (Ripken).

Wow, didn’t expect people to jump on me for an innocent statement about his games played streak. How would anyone know if the streak has affected his playing? He’s had rests here and there with occasional pinch-hit appearances. But seriously, who would know if/how that has affected his play?

Ah, my bad. Don’t know why I’m being such a baby. Apologies all around.
Anyway, though, it would be difficult to tell if it had affected him. For a guy as young and healthy as Sizemore, I’d say no, but I’ve got nothing to really base that on. What’s your take on it?

My take is, we don’t really know.
April was his best month last season, especially in terms of power, and he lost a lot of power in September.
HR by month … 5, 4, 4, 5, 5, 1.
He stole 17 bases in April/May, 16 the rest of the way.
It doesn’t probably mean anything, but it’s enough to bug me a little.

Power numbers are pretty striking, but how much of the base stealing dropoff was Wedge being more conservative, though?
It’s funny, I’ve never really thought about how these consecutive games streaks can affect teams. I hadn’t heard until a couple of days ago that the consensus on Ripken was that he hurt the team quite a bit in his later years.
Also!
Did ya get my e-mail about Philly?

Yeah, I did, I just have no idea what I’m doing.
I doubt Wedge had much to do with it, but again, it means nothing statistically, just an inference.

Ouch at the CS numbers. Interesting. Do you know, in general with a guy like Sizemore, how often is it the player’s choice to steal and how often does the manager call for it?
As for Philly, no worries. Just drop me a line if you think you’d be up for it.

Man what a great weekend up in Cleveland. Was at the game yesterday… absolutely perfect. Best taunt of the night came from my friend Soko:
(as Jeter came to bat): “Hey Jeter, your defense is below average!”

OT: Pittsburgh released Matt Morris today and the ESPN headline was ‘Pirates make struggling vet Morris walk the plank’. Awesome.

The wire story says that releasing Morris costs the Pirates $10 million.
This is simply false. Releasing Morris costs the Pirates nothing.

Sigh. Can we for once call up a guy and just say, whatever, you’re playing. Just for fun, maybe? This seems pretty egregious to me. Michaels, in right field, against a right-handed sinkerballer, with a left-handed premium defender on the bench?

is it just my TV or does it sound like the TBS guys are broadcasting from inside a cave?
by ASP on Apr 27, 2008 1:02 PM EDT 0 recs
Actually they are inside a cave – the NORAD complex to be precise. That way they’re insulated from contact with anybody who actually knows anything at all about baseball. Can’t you tell from their broadcasts?

Anyone think they’re playing Michaels a lot in the hope that he’ll make himself trade-able again? It hasn’t worked well, obviously, but it would at least be rational to try that (and would help me understand why he’s on the field today against Wang).
by peter m on Apr 27, 2008 1:12 PM EDT 0 recs
no…the potential value of anything we could get for Michaels wouldn’t make up for playing him now if the Indians truly think we’ve got a better internal option
