Sheffield Tears Tendon in Ring Finger; Status Unclear
It appears as though getting swept by the Royals may not have been the worst news of the day for the Tigers. According to the Detroit Free Press, Sheffield tore a tendon in his ring finger while sliding into second base during the eighth inning of today's game. According to the article, his near-term status remains unclear. Nevertheless, this kind of injury can't be a good thing.
Figured this news deserved its own FanShot, especially as updates become available.

I guess it all depends on how you define a "good thing."

Sounds like mallet finger to me with the extensor tendon damaged. Possible 6-8 week recovery in a splint I believe to restore it....and that's assuming there isn't bony involvement.

I should also say though that he might be able to play with the splint on, or even take the splint off to bat.

Wow - didn't take long for the injury bug to hit the Tigers, eh? Rodney in ST, Granderson, Miggy, and now Sheffield? They are lovin' that there were no takers on Brandon Inge right now.
The interesting thing is that I figured the injuries would come, but that they would hit the "over 30" crowd (Sheff, Pudge, Renteria, Maggs, Jacques). Up 'til now, it's been all the younger guys, which doesn't reduce the higher likelihood of the older players getting hurt throughout the season Once again, the depth of the Indians feels like a warm and fuzzy security blanket.

I thought Cabera played today. Sure he DHed, but bat is still in the lineup.

Update here - Looks like Sheffield will be back in their lineup soon. The bigger question will be whether, and to what extent, his swing is affected . . . .
