Yeah, club option for 2009, $2.5 million, or a 150K buyout.

Hm, maybe. I could see Marte gets the starting gig, and they keep both Barfield and Carroll for the bench. Not a very useful bench for hitting, but you could do a lot worse.

by Jay on Apr 30, 2008 9:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Should have mentioned this before when we were discussing the trade for Sean Smith. The contract is pretty club friendly, Shapiro understandably loves the one-year deal with a club option when it comes to role players, and that’s basically what we traded for.

If I’m an MLB scout, just about the easiest thing I can do right now is to diagnose a hitter like Hafner or Ortiz with “slower bat speed.”

That story reeked of scared-shitless. They wanted to say the juiciest stuff, but they knew they didn’t have it. But why not just obscure the real story with a tabloid piece of *$#?

by tabler84 on Apr 30, 2008 9:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I imagine if your analysis on why Hafner and Ortiz are declining faster than a popped balloon was limited to suggesting they may have lost bat speed, you wouldn’t want to give your name, either.

by maledicta on Apr 30, 2008 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions

And steroids.

And buckets of fried chicken to sacrifice.

I love how they can’t get the scouts to go on record with this. It’s like, shhh, don’t tell anyone I said this, because it’s a secret and I could get fired … but I think Hafner has lost some bat speed.

Whatever the total absence of gasping sounds like, I’m making that sound now.

by fleerdon on Apr 30, 2008 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions

by Julie on Apr 30, 2008 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably, kind of, whatever.

No real reporting in sports, I guess.

by Jay on Apr 30, 2008 9:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I was thinking the same thing. What do they lose by using their names? Wouldn’t that give them more cred if they were actually right?

by supermarioelia on Apr 30, 2008 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions

First of all, LOL at the last line.

Second, I understand why GMs have to stay off the record when assessing other teams’ players.

But I have never understood what is up with scouts and this code.

by tabler84 on Apr 30, 2008 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, there is a competitive element there, not revealing what a certain team might be thinking about a certain player. If they hype a player, for example, you wouldn’t want that to get out because it would hurt leverage in a trade.

by Jay on Apr 30, 2008 9:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Fair enough, but there has to be SOMEONE who knows SOMETHING about scouting - a retired scout who watches a bunch of tape, maybe? - who can have the balls to go on record.

It’s not only weak, but it drips with false profundity. Bat speed! Only a scout could figure that!

by zempf on Apr 30, 2008 10:06 PM EDT up reply actions

You’ll think I’m nuts, but that team broke my heart.

Started off 16-4. Cool! Finally, a really good team!

Then they went 1-9. Oh, well, of course, that makes more sense.

But then they went 13-3, and then 6-5, so they’re at 36-21. This was a good team!

Keep in mind, this was early June, right around my high school graduation. I know i don’t have to tell anyone how bad the Indians were in the years leading up to 1988, but just to be clear, the last time they’d finished better than 5th place was in 1976, when I was six years old. 5th, 6th, 7th place—this was all I could ever remember. I was genuinely excited that finally, my Indians might be a good team, and, foreshadowing the LGT experience, I was pretty wasted that whole summer anyway.

Then they went 5-16, but they were still over .500 by a few games and still in third place. And while I know this will make no sense to younger fans, I remained genuinely excited that they were in third place, and for them to finish in 3rd seemed almost as good as winning the division. I know, it’s crazy, it’s actually stupid, but that’s what it was like being an 18-year-old Indians fan in 1988.

They won 4 out of the next 6. A little rebound. Stabilizing again. Maybe even the start of another big run, back into 1st place.

But no. They next went 2-9 to dive under .500 for the season and, incredibly, crushingly, back to their traditional 6th place position.

Leaving nothing to chance, they lost 14 of their next 20 games to fall 16 games back on August 11. They spent the entire final two months of the season in 6th place, and it was just like, feh, this is no use, this is never gonna be any use.

In retrospect, they were not that bad at 78-84, but the AL East had five teams that finished with 85-89 wins that year. But I didn’t know that, because by that point I had already left for college in Philadelphia, and I essentially wrote off not only the 1988 Indians, but baseball entirely for the next four years.

by Jay on Apr 30, 2008 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Just checked the box score and Holy Crap – note new, improved family friendly expletive – and Lee’s ERA has gone up by a factor or almost for to what?

Lee’s ERA jumped to 0.96.

If C.C. pitches 25 complete game shutouts … it will still be a little higher than that.
