The Disabled List just called ... it was trying to unload Joe Borowski. I offered a bagel but balked at giving up a ham sandwich. It wanted to keep Westbrook.

Yeah, club option for 2009, $2.5 million, or a 150K buyout.
There are incentives to raise the option salary, but they aren’t reachable.

Mostly likely, yes, though having J-Barf, AbaCab and J-Honey under contract complicates things a little.

Just as unreachable. He needs 789 more plate appearances, or 175 more starts, by the end of this season.

Bear with me…I was 12/13 years old at the time.
I’ve seen the numbers. But give me the subjective view. When the Indians acquired Dave Burba in 1997, Burba was the modern-day equivalent of…?
By the way Caron Butler hopped about 4 times without dribbling before scoring the game winning basket. I wish they would play the sport by its original rules

And steroids.
And buckets of fried chicken to sacrifice.
I love how they can’t get the scouts to go on record with this. It’s like, shhh, don’t tell anyone I said this, because it’s a secret and I could get fired … but I think Hafner has lost some bat speed.
Whatever the total absence of gasping sounds like, I’m making that sound now.
I just farted contemptuously, if that helps.
by fleerdon on Apr 30, 2008 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions
I was thinking the same thing. What do they lose by using their names? Wouldn’t that give them more cred if they were actually right?
by supermarioelia on Apr 30, 2008 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions
First of all, LOL at the last line.
Second, I understand why GMs have to stay off the record when assessing other teams’ players.
But I have never understood what is up with scouts and this code.
Well, there is a competitive element there, not revealing what a certain team might be thinking about a certain player. If they hype a player, for example, you wouldn’t want that to get out because it would hurt leverage in a trade.
Fair enough, but there has to be SOMEONE who knows SOMETHING about scouting - a retired scout who watches a bunch of tape, maybe? - who can have the balls to go on record.
It’s not only weak, but it drips with false profundity. Bat speed! Only a scout could figure that!
....and then can we call Tabler Mary?

There does have to be that SOMEONE who knows SOMETHING and is willing to go on record.
However, there does not have to be a baseball writer who isn’t too lazy to find that guy.
If I was a baseball writer, I would make friends with a bunch of retired scouts. Hell, I might pay them to watch a bunch of games on the Package and e-mail me their notes.

I’ve never understood the hyphenated athlete name. You make millions. I think you’re in a safe position to tell one of your parents to f off for the sake of your poor trainer who has to sew that puppy on.
This is why I always rooted for William Van Landingham.
Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.
Also, why the hell do I remember shit like that? There are useful things that those brain cells could be applied to, but no, it’s some pitcher with a really long name whose career ended 10 years ago.

Can we create a list of questions that PD writers (or others) should be asking?

That’s a good sign, because we kicked ass in ‘88. Oh wait, shit.
Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.
Oh man, I just went & looked at that team. Mel Hall! Terry Francona! Scott Bailes!
Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.
You’ll think I’m nuts, but that team broke my heart.
Started off 16-4. Cool! Finally, a really good team!
Then they went 1-9. Oh, well, of course, that makes more sense.
But then they went 13-3, and then 6-5, so they’re at 36-21. This was a good team!
Keep in mind, this was early June, right around my high school graduation. I know i don’t have to tell anyone how bad the Indians were in the years leading up to 1988, but just to be clear, the last time they’d finished better than 5th place was in 1976, when I was six years old. 5th, 6th, 7th place—this was all I could ever remember. I was genuinely excited that finally, my Indians might be a good team, and, foreshadowing the LGT experience, I was pretty wasted that whole summer anyway.
Then they went 5-16, but they were still over .500 by a few games and still in third place. And while I know this will make no sense to younger fans, I remained genuinely excited that they were in third place, and for them to finish in 3rd seemed almost as good as winning the division. I know, it’s crazy, it’s actually stupid, but that’s what it was like being an 18-year-old Indians fan in 1988.
They won 4 out of the next 6. A little rebound. Stabilizing again. Maybe even the start of another big run, back into 1st place.
But no. They next went 2-9 to dive under .500 for the season and, incredibly, crushingly, back to their traditional 6th place position.
Leaving nothing to chance, they lost 14 of their next 20 games to fall 16 games back on August 11. They spent the entire final two months of the season in 6th place, and it was just like, feh, this is no use, this is never gonna be any use.
In retrospect, they were not that bad at 78-84, but the AL East had five teams that finished with 85-89 wins that year. But I didn’t know that, because by that point I had already left for college in Philadelphia, and I essentially wrote off not only the 1988 Indians, but baseball entirely for the next four years.
Frank and the B-squad put up a snowman. Lee was off, but not much.
