Minor Action: 4/3
The Tribe lost yesterday, but the minor league season got started for 3 of the Indians clubs with some strong opening performances.
Buffalo 9, Norfolk 4
WP: Aaron Laffey (1-0, 0.00), LP: Hayden Penn (0-1, 12.46)
Buffalo put together two big innings against Penn and had a nice performance from Laffey to start the season off right. Laffey allowed just a single unearned run, walked one and struck out 5 in 5 innings. His sinker wasn't Carmona/Westbrook dominant (6-4 GO/FO), but I'll take it with a K per inning. Mastny (2IP,4H,1R,1BB,1K) and Santos (1IP,3H,2R,0BB,1K( followed with ho-hum performances before Bauer finished it off with a strong 9th (1IP,1H,0BB,2K).
Josh Barfield was slotted into the leadoff spot and responded with a 4-5 effort including a double. Jordan Brown, hitting out of the 3-spot and playing first base, was 3-5 with a stolen base. Ryan Mulhern was 2-4 with a double and a walk and Aaron Herr was 2-4 with a triple. Some sloppy fielding with a misplay by Francisco, two from Herr at 3B and a passed ball from Toregas.
Sowers goes tonight at 7:15.
Akron 5, Harrisburg 5 (suspended due to rain in the 10th)
Akron's game got stopped and will be picked up this afternoon, but we still have a boxscore. The bad news here comes from Chuck Lofgren. He had struggles with control last year and granted, it's only his first start, but those control problems still seem to be present. His final line (3.1IP,7H,2R,5BB,1K) wasn't pretty. The good news is that Jeff Stevens relieved him and pitched 3.2 perfect innings (3.2IP,0H,0R,0BB,4K). The legend grows...
Offensively, some familiar names show up. Trevor Crowe finished the night 1-4 with a triple and a walk (and 2 Ks). Matt Whitney, playing DH and hitting 3rd, went 2-3 with a double and a walk. Michael Aubrey, hitting cleanup and playing first, had a 3-run HR in 4 ABs.
Lake County 4, Lakewood 0
WP: Kelvin De La Cruz (1-0, 0.00) LP: D. Naylor (0-1. 5.40)
Speaking of legends, Lord Kelvin's (aka Absolute Zero) might just be emerging. The 6'5", 20-year old Dominican pitched 5 shutout innings while striking out 6 (5IP,5H,0R,2BB,6K). He was followed up by 2 shutout innings from Mike Pontius (w/3Ks) and 2 shutout innings from Dallas Cawiezell.
Big first baseman Chris Nash led the offense with two hits and two RBI. Third baseman Jeff Hehr made his full-season debut, going 3-4 with a double.
Kinston opens their season tonight...

I think I'll go ahead and make Chris Nash my totally unrealistic, absolutely crazy Prospect that most likely Won't Matter mancrush, if that's good with everybody else. I enjoy rooting against all hope.
Hello Nick,
Chris Nash intrigues me even more than Todd Martin does, probably because Nash is only 21-YO (just turned it in Feb.,) compared to Martin being 24-YO. But Nash seems to me like the long-term lower-level 1B prospect that really bears watching, no offense to Martin. Martin will really have to have a stellar year in 2008 across several levels to really factor into the Indians' noted prospects, whereas I think Nash is already knocking on that "noted prospect" door, especially if he has another solid to good season in 2008, preferably at both Lake County and Kinston, at least.

I know he was used in long relief yesterday but do they plan on pitching Stevens late in games as well? Who's closing in Akron?
Hello ASP,
Yes, I think Stevens will get more looks in late-inning situations, being that his command and stuff has really come around and the fact his K/IP ratio is so good.
Tony Lastoria of TheClevelandFan.com reports that Stevens' fastball, (regularly at 92-93, and can reach 95,) gets in on batters quickly, much like Betancourt's, and several seem to think that Betancourt could be the future closer in waiting for the Indians after JoeBo, so it would seem likely Stevens will get more late-inning and even closing opportunities this season, since I think he would project to be part of a late-inning bullpen group (a.k.a. "Circle of Trust." :-)
Just my 2 cents.

Here are the rosters for Buffalo and Akron
http://www.akronaeros.com/press-roster.html
http://buffalo.bisons.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?t=t_ros&cid=422&stn=true&sid=t422
Looks like Indiansfan was right in a previous diary about the Bisons when he predicted Crowe would get at least a taste of AA before seeing AAA action. Keeping Tyner around in AAA made that pretty much a formality.
It was remarked how stacked Buffalo would be this year, but look at Akron! Lofgren, Martin, Newsom, Stevens, Aubrey, Crowe, Gimenez, Goleski...these are all guys that have been mentioned in debates here about whether they will be in AAA or not.
And looking at the age of the Bisons roster...does it look a little...I dunno....old? A lot of guys on there look to be quite expendable and possibly on their last chances with the organization. Which makes it more likely I guess that success by the AA guys can result in a quick promotion.
And a quick question, how do I put links within a single word like we could with the old site?

I really want Pontius to do well, but I'm biased terribly in favor of guys who throw hard.
Adam, if you had to guess, how much longer is Ryan Mulhern's window open? At this point, he'd had to Kouzmanoff his way out of AAA, no?

Hello fleerdon,
As amazing as Mulhern's "long" tenure in the Indians' system has been, I'm more surprised that OF Jason Cooper (yes, that one who had that great season between Lake County and Kinston back in 2003) is still in the system. As small as Mulhern's window is (and it's pretty much non-existent, at least with the Indians,) Cooper's is even less.
Regarding Pontius, he's only 20-YO and the K rates are very nice! I keep thinking he's the one who also has the 3+ GB/1 FB ratio, but I think that's another reliever in our system whose name keeps escaping me. I think he also played at High-A Kinston last season, so I don't think it was Pontius.
Regardless, Pontius is very intriguing; he just needs to shore up that command, but he has time to do that! :-)
Just my 2 cents.

Barring several injuries on the major league roster this season (or a Babe Ruth-like season in Buffalo), Mulhern's window is probably closed in Cleveland. The odds were always stacked against him in that he debuted at an old age (22) and didn't distinguish himself at all during his first two seasons (.798 OPS in Mahoning Valley, .706 OPS in Lake County). He broke out big-time in 2005, putting up a 1.030 OPS between Kinston and Akron, opening up a very small window for himself. But he followed that up with two more unremarkable seasons at Buffalo, which coupled with his defensive position, pretty much sealed his fate. He's probably closer to the Ernie Young trajectory now than the Kevin Kouzmanoff.
Lord Kelvin - Lawd Kelvin - man I luv this guy already. All the cool - pun noted - nickname possibilities. I was looking at the Cleveland Spiders roster the other day with guys like Nig Cuppy, Cowboy Jones, Zeke Wilson, Cupid Childs, Ossee Schreckengost, Suter Sullivan, Tommy Tucker and Kid Carsey, and was bemoaning the lack of current great names. But Lord Kelvin would definitely make up for that.

Recommended! Thanks for the update!
That is a good looking lineup in Buffalo. Definitely better than what SF Giants are trotting out for offense.
Also, Akron has a few prospects I'm interested in - Hodges, Aubrey and Whitney. I'm waiting for Wes Hodges to break the curse of Travis Fryman - which deems that no Indians 3B prospect is allowed to make an impact in the majors!
Not going to do a full update, but Buffalo and Lake County both won again last night. Judge Judy got the victory for the Captains, pitching 2.1 innings of strong relief.
Sean Smith started for Buffalo, going 3 (2 ER, 6 H, 3 BB, 4K, 70 pitches), with the next three by Elarton (1 ER, 2 H, 0 BB, 1 K, 36 pitches). These look like "emergency spot start" numbers. I thought Sowers was supposed to start that game, but now I see that he's scheduled to go tonight. Is there something going on we should know about, or am I just mistaken?

I believe Lovullo said they wanted to split up Laffey and Sowers with a righty in between. That'll be the normal rotation, with Miller probably sliding into that spot when he returns.
Hello mcrose,
Thanks for confirming - I was suspecting that was the reason (splitting the two of them up, since they're a bit similar to each other,) but that's a good point about being able to fit Miller right inbetween the two when he returns!

Hello APV,
I was thinking the same thing - Archer probably was on a strict pitch count, so he wasn't likely to continue for the no-hit bid anyway.
In any event, it was a very solid start and good beginning to the 2008 season for Archer, who has a high ceiling - it will be interesting to see how he progresses, and as mentioned, he's only 19-YO.
Just my 2 cents. :-)

Hello APV,
Archer had very good stuff being drafted out of a NC high school, but he was very erratic with his command while he's been in the system. It's nice to see him start well here in 2008 - being that he's only 19-YO, he has time to work it all out.
Too bad the bullpen blew it, although Landis struck out 2 in 1.1 IP, but Campfield and Holt were not impressive at all.
Just my 2 cents. :-)

The Lakewood announcers were very impressed with Archer - he threw strikes, worked quickly and sat between 91-93 on his fastball until tiring a bit in the fifth.
I was a little surprised he made the LC rotation - I think he was a late add after an impressive ST. His big problem has been command, and it looks like he might have now found a groove with his mechanics. He's still a teenager for the rest of the year, and will be part of a very young rotation that has had a successful first turn - De La Cruz, Morris (drafted next to Archer in '06), and Miller all did quite well, with Santo Frias yet to toe the rubber.
Hello mcrose,
I think that's becoming an exciting trend, the fact that Lake County's pitching over the last few seasons is including a lot of young, projectable pitchers. That's why I think the Indians' farm system has more in it than many of the national media think is there - granted, they all likely won't turn out, but if even 1/3 to 1/2 of them turn out as or close to as expected, the Indians should be in very good shape going into the future in regards to the pitching staff (and they also have some nice young positional talent too, including Weglarz, Rivero, Cumberbatch, Mills, etc.) That's in addition to pitchers like Carmona, Miller, Lofgren, Stevens, Santos (presuming the last four make it, of course,) Perez, Lewis, Laffey, Sowers, etc. - very good depth in my opinion.
Just my 2 cents. :-)

Hello dgcambridge,
Whoops - sorry! :-) I wasn't looking "that" far ahead; Rosario will likely pitch at either the GCL Indians or with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, and none of the ones I've mentioned are lower than Low-A Lake County.
However, though, De La Cruz was at SS-A Mahoning Valley for a good part of last season, so Rosario might (and hopefully will) be mentioned by this time next season (and take a similar leap in 2009 like De La Cruz is doing early on in 2008. :-)
Just my 2 cents.
