Great question from the previous thread: does Iron stay in to face Ichiro san?

by macasson on May 1, 2008 9:08 PM EDT reply actions

I would, but Wedge probably won’t.

by gte619n on May 1, 2008 9:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Perez is Steel, not Iron.

And the answer is no.

by Jay on May 1, 2008 9:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Dang. On both counts.

by macasson on May 1, 2008 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, he does get a unique line in the box score … 0.1 IP, 0 batters faced.

by Jay on May 1, 2008 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions

What’s the logic for having Iron start the inning – and shit, as i type this Ichiro with a single – is it that if Steel does NOT retire the lead-off batter, Iron has to come in with men on base? Is Wedge married to the closer-starts-an-inning philosophy even though Iron routinely went 4 or more outs last year?

by macasson on May 1, 2008 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I imagine he’s married to the Iron-starts-the-9th philosophy but might put him in there early, to get more than four outs.

by Jay on May 1, 2008 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, i did a poor job of separating the 4-out save from the (more rare) 2-out save, which may have been the move here. hindsight rocks.

It’s all good. The Mariner comeback – I was on Johnston Island at the time – saw us down by 17-18 and kinda gave up and went to the gym. I’m workin’ out and onnna the guys says, “hey Chuck, you’re boyz look like they might come back” and I figure he’s bustin’ my balls, right? But I look at the TV in the Stair Master Room and “Holy Tris Speaker!” They’re commin’ back right? So I call my bro in DC – the one with the Maryland plates that say “GOTRIBE” and we’re both freakin’ out – good times!

I’ve been out and about but it’s nice to come back and see that Paul Byrd had another great outing. Almost eight innings? Absurd!

Need more bats, though. What a silly sport this is when Hafner gets a day off to shake the slump, Indians have a seemingly so-so lineup and go off for eight runs, then the next day Hafner is back, everyone else for the most part is sleeping and Hafner will probably be responsible for this win. Good stuff.

As awful as that was, I would not advocate using Marte as a defensive sub. He looks great out there in general, but he hasn’t demonstrated the surehanded consistency that you should start putting him in there just for defense.

That’s what I’m saying, I don’t think you make someone a defensive sub unless the difference is clear.

Qualification: In the 10th, Gutierrez got a really big opposite field hit that set up the bases loaded situation when Cabrera walked. He did look awful in the 11th, though. 50/50.

Forget Marte .. let’s just make Carroll our everyday 3b.

“We lost more slowly”? “They’ll come around”? It’s like the anti-Mountains of Change thread in here.

Nobody’s going to go off about Fultz, or say we should have signed Fukudome? Nobody?

by fleerdon on May 1, 2008 10:59 PM EDT reply actions

Fultz should be our new third base coach.

Who’s the equipment manager? He should be fired for not tightening the strings on Casey Blake’s glove. We need a new pinata to beat upon .. Shelton and Skinner are becoming old hat.

by Toxicadam on May 1, 2008 11:10 PM EDT reply actions

Hell yes. I’m just … sick of all of it, to tell you the truth. I don’t want to complain anymore, I don’t want a piñata. I want this team to go out and win 20 of 22 like I know they can.

Just read the recap … Skinner sent Hafner … on Ichiro? What the hell? Was he not there last night?

It was pretty much wall to wall ugly ball, save for The Cobra.

As good as our starting pitching has been, White Sox have allowed fewest runs in AL, third best in majors. And that’s with Jose Contreras in the rotation.

by odradek on May 2, 2008 2:18 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah well, CC had a coupla clunkers in there as well as Byrd. Now that our SP is firin’ on all cylinders we’ll blow past those stiffs – no problem.

How is that run in the 9th off Betancourt an earned run?

by macasson on May 2, 2008 4:11 AM EDT reply actions

Can’t assume the out and it was followed by a hit, so in their minds Ichiro is standing at 3rd when that hit happens and it doesn’t matter about the throw.

Winning Formula: Long fly ball... Deep ______ Field... Awaaaayyyy back! Gone!

by Justin Higgins on May 2, 2008 7:06 AM EDT up reply actions

yes, but wasn’t there a wild pitch involved as well . . . or do only passed balls lead to unearned runs. i feel like i should know this.

by macasson on May 2, 2008 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s right, runs on wild pitches are earned, but Betancourt’s wild pitch was before all of that, it advanced Ichiro to 2B.

I don’t know if CS are ever assumed for the purpose of earned runs.

Jay/Ryan, its early hours of Saturday morning and I’ve had plenty following a dinner out, last two games while at work I’ve been unable to access SB Nation because it says it is down for routine maintenance, yet I get home and find there has been a game thread. Is this some sort of site problem or my work blocking it? Do you know? Following the game via ESPN Gamecast is hard work. Whilst I might not comment much it was interesting to share the same emotions albeit 10 hours late reading the game thread!!! Droooooobs yeah!!!

One day I'll get over to watch the Tribe play

It may be that your office or their access provider is doing some kind of caching to boost performance. I assume you’ve tried every possible way to reload? It may be embarrassing to report this to your tech staff at work, but it’s the kind of thing they should want to know about, as I’m sure it doesn’t affect only this site.
