On an unrelated note, Jason Michaels is batting in the 3-hole for the Pirates tonight. Even with all of our offensive struggles, we were never forced to do that.

When did Delichaels officially separate? When we DFA’d Michaels or before? Cause our half of the platoon has hit in the three hole for about over a week now

Vernon Wells will not be in the lineup tonight, or tomorrow, or any other time in May or (probably) June. He broke his wrist last night and is out 6-8 weeks. Jeremy Accardo also joins the ever-expanding Toronto DL, with Super Joe Inglett and Armando Benitez getting the call-ups.

I saw Scutaro again called “former Indians farmhand Marco Scutaro” in the paper today. That clumsy nickname has stuck to him as well as “former Panamanian strongman Manel Noriega.”

someone pointed this out before, and its manifestly obvious, but it is absolutely incredible that aaron laffey is our number 6 starter. our starting rotation is so good that laffey sowers and miller are in the minors if everyone is healthy.

what good would he be in the pen with a rotation like that? we already have 2 guys out there who never get to pitch.
if jake comes back and is healthy, byrd’s vest value to us might be as a trade piece. but i doubt that happens. most likely they give laffey a pat on the back, send him down and say “great job kid, you’ll be up here to stay next year”

I think in fact he’ll be going back to the minors. Keep in mind that our entire rotation has injury questions. I think they would have to really like a trade in order to give up a piece of that depth.
If they’re going to make a trade, making a more substantial one, for a non-rental player, generally will make more sense. Sowers is the likely target in that deal, it seems to me. As for shipping Byrd off in a lesser deal, I think depends not only on the return but on the continued health of Miller and progress of Huff.

I wonder if Fausto would have turned out differently if he had actually been forced to pitch a game in the minors after his send-down last year.

If Laffey turns into a lefty Carmona, I am just going to freak out. Guys with low strikeout numbers are not supposed to succeed. It’s against nature!
Laffey is 16 months younger than Carmona, by the way, so he’s on a very similar path so far. He’s the youngest guy on the roster except for his personal catcher, AbaCab.

If we really had all three of those guys in our starting rotation on a regular basis I would really want to the FO to make an effort to move ‘drub to short and get a slick-fielding 2B into our lineup, even if they’ve got a subpar bat. But then again, maybe I’m overestimating the synergistic value of great infield defense and a ridiculously ground-ball focused pitching staff.

I was talking in the offseason about moving Peralta to 2B long-term for exactly this reason, but there is a need for AbaCab to prove he can stay in the majors first.
On the other hand, if 3/5 of our rotation is going to stay lefthanded, does it really matter all that much to swap them?

We said the same thing last year, I remember the conversations distinctly. And then Lee followed Westbrook to the DL, and the rest is history. It would be fine with me if Byrd had to visit the DL and then Laffey has more time to make himself too good not to keep on the big league roster.

IIRC it was a squibber; 3B charged in, fielded, bobbled, fell over, broke his wrist, dropped the ball and kicked it towards first base, and still beat Garko by a step. Well, anyway, it was a squibber, which allowed the runners to advance.

does that mean asdrubal is just a superstar defender? bc i remember looking at a bunch of different defensive metrics in the offseason that never had JP lower than just below the middle. a few even had him in the top 3rd i think. the problem might be that there are no perfect ways to measure defense, which might be illustrated by the fact that jhonny looks like he sucks, some numbers say he does, and some say he doesn’t

I think you may not be looking at some of the most refined metrics. Jhonny scores solid-average on some and terrible on others. AbaCab is something like a 70-75 on the 20-80 scale.

Wow, I’d never realized that, but the NY Times says it’s true:
Shapiro wanted a player from the major league roster along with Phillips and Cliff Lee, a left-handed pitcher. Neither general manager identified the player, but he was Brad Wilkerson, the Expos’ rookie center fielder. ’’We realized they’re trying to win this year and they couldn’t do it,’’ Shapiro said. He agreed to take Grady Sizemore, a minor league outfielder and another top prospect, instead of Wilkerson.
Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.

A little something from an answers.com article
The FutureIn spite of manufacturers’ assurances that the supply of ash trees is not decreasing, the development of composite and aluminum bats continues. The wood composite bat typically consists of a plastic foam core surrounded by woven layers of resin-impregnated synthetic fibers. One of the newest innovations is a bat made of “lanxide,” a ceramic-enforced material. Proponents of non-wood bats point to their resistance to breakage. These bats also greatly alter hitting power: a player’s batting average increases markedly with an aluminum bat.
Although the composite and aluminum bats are popular with amateur and college base-ball players, they are required to use all-wood bats if they advance to the major leagues. It is doubtful that Major League Baseball will ever allow anything but pure wood for bats. The sport is steeped in tradition, and the use of aluminum or composite materials would alter the record books dramatically.

I think the fear that someone will be killed by a rocket launched by a major leaguer swinging an aluminum bat exceeds the fear that someone will be impaled by a shattered maple bat, so that’s no solution. Go back to ash bats, or some other wood, or maybe a less lively aluminum, or something. But the way those maple bats fly apart, they’ve gotta go.

you figure? im not sure how much danger anyone in the field is of sustaining any sort of trauma. the losses the bat takes in breaking – plus air resistance – make them, im guessing here, essentially harmless. i was at a game last year, however, with my brother, and someone (opposing team) let go of his bat mid-swing. it flew into the stands and nailed this mom in her stomach. she was totally hurt, had the wind knocked out of her and everything.

wait. you didnt get it – the point is the bat didnt shatter. all that plastic deformation when the bat shatters takes away a lot of kinetic energy. if you just let go of a whole bat, however, without breaking it, then it packs a punch. but that is independent of bat material, obviously.

Some coach got hit in the dugout the other day, and it was one of those “if he’d been an inch to the left, he’d have lost an eye” things. The problem is that the potential victims (pitcher and infielders, but primarily coaches, dugout personnel, camerapersons and fans) are not likely to be watching the bat shards, focusing instead on the ball. So while there may be time to duck, not everyone will—like this coach. I’ll see if I can find the link.

So, now that we know Wedge is willing to start backups, why won’t he play Marte?
