That was quite hilarious. Grady has a nice dry sense of humor.

Yeah. I like him even more know. He’s a guy you’d like to hang out with-not just because he’d attract chicks, but, it seems like he’d be quoting Anchorman and Talladega Nights, just a lot of inside jokes and stuff.
It's the Arizona talking, really.

I would hope somebody running for president would have experience with bookstores.
The Disabled List just called ... it was trying to unload Joe Borowski. I offered a bagel but balked at giving up a ham sandwich. It wanted to keep Westbrook.

... or if not, at least some experience running an MLB team :)

Did anyone see in that same issue of ESPN the Steve Phillips recommendations on how to fix the Reds. Number 2 I believe was for Jocketty to call up Shapiro and trade Adam Dunn for Cliff Lee and 1 of Jeremy Sowers or Aaron Laffey.

Boy, while we’re fleecing Jocketty I wonder if he’d accept a straight up Sizemore for Corey Patterson swap, then we’d really have swindled him.

For what it’s worth, in his time with the Carindals, Jocketty took Finley, Selby and Belliard off our hands. There may have been others.

As far as projecting actual trades, this is a good point. Dunn would be a boost to our lineup….I wonder if he could be had straight up for Laffey/Sowers and a position player prospect?

It’s not clear to me that we should give up even Sowers straight-up by himself for 4.5 months of Dunn and $10 million added to the payroll.
Do people think that Dunn is amazing and Sowers isn’t worth much? If so, wrong on both counts.

I like it when players hit balls out of stadiums and into large geographical features, visible from space. It’s definitely a bias of mine.
In seriousness, I am at anyone’s mercy when it comes to assessing trade value from club to club. I mean, I agree that Sowers is worth a lot and I don’t think Dunn is amazing. But I don’t know how they compare to each other. I suppose it’s just a matter of adding up the ledger on each side.
If it’s not Sowers, then maybe Lofgren + a small piece? I’m fighting to tread water here.

What’s needed here is just a little perspective on each.
Dunn, even assuming he’s amazing, is strictly a rental player. He’ll be a free agent at the end of the year, and his salary, while not ridiculous, is substantial.
Sowers is a major-league pitcher — at the very least a National League pitcher — and while he struggled last season, his third as a pro, he dominated in his first two seasons and is doing well this year in his fourth. He’s under contract through 2013, which by the way probably covers his peak seasons, age 25-30.
Sowers’ total salaries for all of 2008-2011 will almost certainly be less than Dunn will make for the next five months, and Sowers’ salary will likely be well below-market for 2012 and 2013 as well.
Does that help make it more clear?

Yes, yes it does. Thanks. Of course, all of this probably flies out the window when dealing with Crazy Uncle Walt. Judging by the roster construction in St Louis over the past few years, I think he thinks players peak at 34.

But Sowers is something that we have a couple of - a young, middle to bottom of the rotation starting pitcher. Dunn represents something that we do not have at all - power from a corner OF. So you are not necessarily comparing Sowers’ value to Dunn’s. Part of the equation is comparing what you lose in Sowers (not so much in the next couple of years, because he has replacements), versus what you gain in Dunn for the rest of this year. I just do not think that you lose that much trading Sowers.
That being said, I’m not sure I’d trade Sowers or Laffey for Dunn straight up. I can see Dunn not doing so well adjusting to a new park and new pitchers. I think that I’m OK with the “pitching and defense and get all of your players from the minor leagues” model of this team. I just hope that some of the bats get hot.

Speaking of defense—have you seen Dunn in the outfield? And people think Dellucci is bad?

I’d be more inclined to trade Sowers than Laffey, but don’t think I would do it straight up for Dunn.

Just because you have Giles and need Rincon doesn’t mean you trade Giles for RIncon, unless Rincon is the only available player you really need and you cannot win without him. The obligation on the GM is to get as close to equal value as possible, even when dealing excess depth to fill a hole.

Yeah, that’s what Shapiro will do.
He’ll trade 2.75 years of Cliff Lee ($16.5 million) for 4.5 months of Adam Dunn ($10 million).
And throw in five years of Laffey or Sowers.
No doubt he’s silently thinking to himself, “This will work because Shapiro is one of those stupid GM’s who doesn’t think Dunn’s stirkeouts are a problem.”
