Mastny being sent down?

In the notes to tonite's AP recap of the game:

After the game, Indians RHP Tom Mastny was seen shaking hands with teammates. The reliever said he will be sent to Buffalo on Sunday, but the Indians did not announce a move.

Since Wedge doesn't like to run with an 11 man staff ....

Am assuming Westbrook and Browski are not ready to come off the DL yet.

Non 40 man roster options could be Elarton, Stanford, Rick Bauer, Matt Ginter or Jeff Harris from Buffalo.

If I had to guess, it will be Elarton or Bauer.

Canton Repository says it will be a position player – leading candidates Barfield and Gonzalez

by palcal on May 11, 2008 12:55 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ok, thanks … guess this post is superfluous then. I still don’t thin kthey keep a position player longterm since Wedge hates to have an 11 man staff.

by talonk on May 11, 2008 12:57 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Indians are far from needing a 12th pitcher; if they do start to run short, they have a long list of guys to choose from as evidenced by this list

by palcal on May 11, 2008 12:58 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

with Michaels gone and only 39 on the 40-man roster, it does open up the possibility of adding Gonzalez without dropping someone

by palcal on May 11, 2008 1:01 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Guys who weren’t in the lineup last night at Buffalo:

Ryan Mulhern
Jason Cooper

Don’t see either of those two getting much facetime in Cleveland. This sounds to me a little like a recognition that Mastny might need to pitch once in awhile to, you know, be a decent pitcher. Now that they have a 40-man roster spot open they could conceivably shuttle him down to Buffalo and bring up someone negligble to serve as a temporary filler…

About 4 days ago Lastoria posted that the Indians were considering bringing up Michael Aubrey (I guess to spell a struggling Garko).

Seems out of the blue, but possible.

by Toxicadam on May 11, 2008 1:37 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Michael Aubrey in the majors?...that doesn’t even seem possible. Like walking uphill to and from school…

by APV on May 11, 2008 1:50 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Having read through the gamethread, I see that Garko took one in the hand. So maybe the call is going to Aubrey.

by APV on May 11, 2008 2:12 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Gark did stay in the game though. And my goodness if Gark going down still doesn’t mean Marte gets playing time….then I give up.

by supermarioelia on May 11, 2008 9:20 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It doesn’t necessarily mean that, it could just mean they want an extra option at that position.

Brad Snyder got called up when Sizemore was day-to-day, but he didn’t get used.

by Jay on May 11, 2008 9:53 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ocker is reporting that its likely Jason Tyner, for his defense and ability to steal a base. They’d have to clear a spot on the 40-man for him. Scott Lewis is out 2-3 months, so he could be called up and put on the 60-day DL retroactively to make room, I guess. Is there a limit on how far back you can date an injury like that?

by Fundamentals on May 11, 2008 9:56 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

They shouldn’t have to open up a 40-man spot. They already did by jettisoning J-Mike. Looking at their 40-man on the Indians website…I count 39 with 1 open spot.

by APV on May 11, 2008 10:02 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Good call. I just assumed the spot was taken, but you are correct.

by Fundamentals on May 11, 2008 10:14 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

But I still don’t want Jason Tyner on this team.

by Fundamentals on May 11, 2008 10:14 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Indians website reporting it is Tyner.

Isn’t Choo on the 60 day DL? If so, when he is ready they would need to clear another spot – this gives it to them. There wouldn’t be any issue with DFA’ing Tyner and he could probably still end up back in Buffalo.

by IndyDave on May 11, 2008 11:16 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I was thinking about that, too….although I’m really not terribly excited about Jason Tyner in Cleveland.

by APV on May 11, 2008 11:19 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

choo is on the 15 day. where did the notion that he was ever on the 60 day come from?

by Brick. on May 11, 2008 11:29 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Here.

and tyner is already on there.

by Brick. on May 11, 2008 11:31 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And here’s the story

Hoping for a quote from Shapiro or Wedge, but nothing yet

by APV on May 11, 2008 11:47 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

“We feel that, like Michaels, Tyner can suck in the AL, but thrive in the middle of any NL lineup. We want to give him the chance to fulfil the former part of that equation and are confident that he will.”

by Brick. on May 11, 2008 11:51 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   1 recs

Michaels did go 3 for 4 yesterday, I think. Perhaps the theory has merit!

by peter m on May 11, 2008 12:31 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Michaels was hitting .275 for the past month prior to the trade. His incredibly bad start doomed him.

by emd2k3 on May 12, 2008 9:59 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Let’s take a look at Aubrey. He’s the one plausible internal candidate to replace, or at least spell, Garko or Hafner. And he’s already on the 40-man.

by ken from alexandria on May 11, 2008 10:40 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

aubrey is the most exciting to me, tybner or gonzalez – not so much. elarton if it’s a pitcher, i guess.

by Brick. on May 11, 2008 11:02 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

so, just when the offense gets going, we bring up a piranha. glad it’s not gonzalez. probably would have just taken more time away from marte.

by Brick. on May 11, 2008 11:32 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

somehow this move makes sense. i just have no idea how.

i think it’s just. “man, we never need that extra pitcher so we might as well have another pinch runner or something going into interleague play”

by Brick. on May 11, 2008 11:35 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i’m just going to be really, really upset if he ever has a bat in his hand

as long as it involves something regarding the pitcher’s spot in the batting order, i’m fine with it. if he starts today or something….. tyner make gfp angry.

by Brick. on May 11, 2008 11:49 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

maybe shapiro decided we need a gritty outfielder to cover pie duties after all.

by nomar363 on May 11, 2008 11:51 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

tyner, the pie-er.

by Brick. on May 11, 2008 11:52 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

We’re probably just showcasing Tyner to the Jays. Ah silly Jays and their lack of good outfielders. Also, after BenFran’s past two games I’d like to think that they Jays would hilariously overpay for him too. I say let’s take advantage of JP the Gunslinger while he’s fighting for his life.

by supermarioelia on May 11, 2008 11:35 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, the Jays really love Lind, huh? He got 19 AB then they signed Wilkerson off the scrap heap and shipped him back to Syracuse. J.P. Bavasi is doing a mighty fine job up north.

by emd2k3 on May 12, 2008 10:01 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Right you are. But in truth I was just throwing out some raw meat hoping to attract a flurry of Paul Lynde activity.

by ken from alexandria on May 12, 2008 11:02 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Jays fans love Lind, and why he continues to get abused by their FO is craziness.

Also, JP Bavasi is pure gold. That’s becoming part of the lexicon.
