I’m not in Cleveland but from a glance at the Doppler, I’d guess this one isn’t getting played.

Gonna be tough, looks like it’s supposed to rain most of tomorrow too. These aren’t games I want to be rescheduled…these Jays look dead in the water right now.

Especially with Tyner, who’s a monster at the Prog:
Tyner spent the entire 2007 season in the big leagues with the Twins and hit his first Major League homer last July at Progressive Field.
off of ‘me’.
The Disabled List just called ... it was trying to unload Joe Borowski. I offered a bagel but balked at giving up a ham sandwich. It wanted to keep Westbrook.
I’m sure someone could look this up, but I don’t need to. Has anyone else ever noticed that when Jake gives up homers, it’s usually to guys who don’t hit them?

Not so much this year, but in past years

Two straight days off for Gutierrez, anybody have a quote on that?
by NickFantana on May 11, 2008 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions
Someone (Jay?) predicted that Francisco would take AB’s away from Gutierrez. They’re obviously going by “the book”—Francisco is supposed to be the better hitter against right-handed pitching, so he plays. I like Francisco well enough, but I hope they don’t reduce Gutierrez to a guy who only plays against lefties. Who knows, maybe they really are showcasing Francisco and plan to try to trade him before the league adjusts to him.
Yes, Wedge in effect said so. He indicated that Francisco wouldn’t play every day, but he would get AB’s at the expense of Gutz. I think he used the word ‘proect.’ By this he means that Gutz likely won’t play against any right-hander with an average or better breaking ball. This was a good lineup for today, Gutz would’ve had very little chance against Burnett.
And though Wedge said that Ben Fran wouldn’t play everday, if he hits, he will play every day. Especially with the way this team has started out. Then we’ll have a Dellucci/Gutz platoon. I speculated about this in ST when I wondered if Ben Fran would play well enough in Winter Haven to take a job and force a trade of Michaels and a platoon of DD/Gutz. I was just a month-and-a-half early in my speculation.
As you can tell, I think this is going to happen. I also picked up Ben Fran on my fantasy team and dumped Gutz.
Call me crazy, but although Gootz may well still have some struggles ahead, I doubt that Cisco will hit that much better (for very long) to outweigh the very significant difference in range, and a smaller difference in arm.
not crazy

I disagree with you a bit, Crazy. :)
I can tell that Gutz is improving, he’s having better AB’s against RHP…but he’s still got a ways to go since he was so awful to begin with. I still think Gutz has the higher ceiling, because if he can continue his improvement against RHP he could well have 30 HR power. But I think Francisco will likely be significantly better against RHP in 2008.
The weather forecast says showers (not steady rain), so I’ll bet they try to play the game today. It’s not raining (hard, anyway) right now. Just miserable, that’s all. The radar shows a lot of rain out by Toledo, but I don’t know if it’s supposed to head here or will go North or South of the city. I think the forecast for tomorrow is actually not as bad (at least the last one I saw was more positive). No snow, anyway.
Man…I finally am in at a time when I can watch a game and its delayed…at least our weather is better than yours for once…

AND with no off days soon, we’d run into the same problem with the rotation that gave Sowers a start earlier this season.
The Disabled List just called ... it was trying to unload Joe Borowski. I offered a bagel but balked at giving up a ham sandwich. It wanted to keep Westbrook.
Meh…Laffey will pitch on the 15th against OAK, get sent down, and Sowers gets called up to start on the 16th in CIN. Sucks for Laffey, but it’ll have to happen.
damn

Stuck at work. Bad baserunning by Drew?
by dgcambridge on May 11, 2008 11:13 PM EDT up reply actions
the double header changed what wedge decided for the lineup from yesterday:
INDIANS (18-18): CF Grady Sizemore, 2B Jamey Carroll, LF David Dellucci, C Victor Martinez, RF Ben Francisco, DH Travis Hafner, 1B Ryan Garko, SS Asdrubal Cabrera, 3B Casey Blake.
Castrovince has a good point about Byrd….Shapiro, while maybe not always the most aggressive at giving young guys opportunities to prove themselves, has been pretty consistent in keeping them up in the bigs once they do (Garko, Gutz, Cabrera, Fausto, Lewis, Perez….). I wonder if Laffey’s pitched well enough for Shapiro to think about keeping him there and bumping the next in line (Byrd).
I really don’t think Byrd is in jeopardy. The Indians clearly like having six or seven starters stacked up—replacing Byrd would eliminate some of their depth. Having a promising young pitcher won’t be enough to dislodge him just yet.
But doesn’t Laffey almost seem to be making the transition from “promising young pitcher” to “very good major league starter”?
Laffey’s been so good, it’s hard to imagine they’d keep Sowers over him. But, I guess if it’s just for one or two starts, they might go that route to minimize disruption until Westbrook returns.
I’m skeptical about the speculation about Byrd. I think the Indians want a veteran guy with broad experience on the staff, and he’s it. He’s pitched well enough, despite the homers, for them to stick with him for a while longer (all year, if he does what he’s been doing, I suspect). Laffey, in particular, is really young, so they may be content to let him wait until a rotation spot opens up.
Obviously, if they could get a good return for Byrd….but that disclaimer aside, I don’t see much argument for Sowers over Byrd. We don’t really think, over the course of this year, Sowers will be the better pitcher, do we? I don’t.
Now Laffey, that might be another story. It’s possible he could simply overtake Byrd.
By the way, how sweet will life be once Westbrook returns, assuming Lee is even half as good as he is now? I love discussing Byrd vs. Laffey in the 5th spot.
OOO OOOO OOO (in my Horshack voice)
If our starters are throwing so excellent, and Wedge really only likes using a 4-5 man bullpen …. I have the solution … A six-man rotation.
CC, Fausto, Lee, Westbrook, Byrd and Laffey. All but Byrd throw 6 innings plus. In a regular week there are 6 games. That leaves around 18 innings to be spread around RaffyB, RaffL, Jensen, Masa, Julio, and Breslow. That’s 3 innings each. Should work in theory.
[P.S. I know it won’t happen, but an intiguing idea to have]
Under very few circumstances does a 6-man rotation make sense. Think about it…by definition your 6th starter is not as good as your other 5. But by regularly pitching him, you’re basically giving their innings to him. Why would you want a less good pitcher to take those innings if you don’t have to?
wait i am so confused

this is actually outrageous . . . 2nd-tier ace with history of arm troubles is sent out to pitch the 8th on a 100 pitch count while his anemic team has 1 inning to make up a 3 run deficit.

Re: Fausto and the 9th, everyone seems to be forgetting about stress as a significant component with pitch count.
Fausto has faced only 30 batters. By my count, he faced 18 of them with the bases empty and only 2 of them with a man in scoring position. For the other 10, there was a man on first, usually with one or two outs. Not a very stressful game.
I think I might send him out on a one-baserunner limit.
But if the stress is low, the extra pitches essentially don’t mean anything, and we have more to be concerned about with the bullpen. You never know how many guys we’re going to need tonight, and over the next few weeks with just one off-day, and we’re already working with a short bullpen thanks to Tyner.

Garko is one of those guys who somehow inspires irrational enthusiasm, not just for what he’s going to do, but for what he’s already done. The way people talk about him, you’d think he was solidly a 900 OPS guy, but he never has been and may not ever be.
I was inspired watching him guzzle bud light last year after we beat the Yankees.
It's the Arizona talking, really.
Okay, I get it, chicks dig Garko. Kind of ruggedly handsome, two years away from making his first million, went to Stanford—he’s a catch. I’ll shut up then.
I think he’s kind of ugly. Attractively ugly. But ugly.

Kudos to Fausto for saving the bullpen. Doubleheader proves irrelevant after all, except for it’s impact on the rotation this Friday.

Carmona just jumped from 7th to 3rd in the league in ERA — imagine if he actually were pitching solidly.
One of the guys he passed was Marcum, bumped from 5th to 6th, whom we’ll be facing in just a few minutes.
It’s too bad we’re still stuck with the guy who’s last in the league, but at least he’ll be gone after this season.

It was originally 7:05, but the only official listing I’ve seen since gametime is 8:05. I think it will actually be around 7:20.
Both Hammy and STO said 7:05, both making reference to the remarkable coincidence. STO is now backing of that stance, but not giving a new time. Cliffy is warming in the pen.
