Tyner up, Mastny down
Huh? Speedy, light-hitting OF Jason Tyner gets Michaels' old 40-man roster spot and apparently half his old job — the pinch-running and defensive replacement parts. I guess.
Speculation has it that this situates the Indians better for interleague play, but aside from next weekend's trip to Cincinnati, the Indians' only games in National League parks are over a month away, June 17-22, when they'll visit the Rockies and Dodgers.
Now that he's on the 40-man, Tyner can't be sent back down to the minors unless he has an option remaining. That seems highly unlikely, as does the idea that the Indians will go with 14 position players and only 11 pitchers for very long.

how about….the pinch-running and defensive replacement part? though, i suppose having a lefty on the bench when dellucci starts is a good thing….or something.

Look at Tyner’s splits against righties and lefties…it’s a lose-lose proposition when it comes to his bat

i kind of want tyner to pinch hit for cc. i can see the gamethread now. it will make the calls for marte seem tame. “why would you pinch hit a lefty for cc who is a lefty with more power?!”, they’ll scream. “what does cc have to do to prove he deserves at bats?!”, they’ll plea. “fire, wedge!!”, they’ll demand….

I’ve got to defend Michaels here.
Career OPS vs. LHP
Michaels: .827
Tyner: .571
Career OBP vs LHP
Michaels: .378
Tyner: .301
Not even remotely similar…

MLB.com is reporting that Tyner had a bad April, but has hit .370 in his most recent 8 games. Knowing this, it seems that it’s another desperate move to inject some life into the offense. At the very least, it gives us a live bat off the bench, assuming Tyner has turned it around at the plate.

I really doubt this. If Tyner plays at all, it’ll be in a late-inning replacement mode, or as a pinch-hitter, pinch-runner. I can’t see them sitting Gutierrez or Francisco to play Tyner. That wouldn’t make any sense at all, unless both of them had a long stretch of horrible play.

Turned it around? To what?
638 career OPS, 706 in his best season?
If that’s considered a “live bat,” we’re dead.

I’m saying it’s an act of desperation. It’s time for a left handed pinch hitter and I look at my bench. I see a cold Proon and a hot Tyner, it gives a me a short term choice. Maybe in a month, Haf is looking more like a .260 hitter with power and Tyner isn’t hot anymore. Or maybe, in a month, the offense is rolling, and Tyner is a fifth wheel and can be DFAed. But Wedge is forced to deal with the here and now.

The only problem with this theory is that cold Proon is unlikely to be worse than a hot Tyner.
Whatever reason the Indians have added Tyner, it can’t possibly be for his bat.

Not sure I get this one at all. You’re telling me we had no idea a week ago that Mastny would eventually be sent down? And that since we’re paying most of Michaels salary anyway, that he isn’t a better option than Tyner? I really hope this isn’t anything more than a ceremonial “thanks for a few months of work, Tyner” callup followed by a quick DFA.

I am wondering if the Indians are concerned about Dellucci’s range, or perhaps even Francisco’s. Obviously, if Tyner later ends up replacing Francisco on the roster (with less playing time), that works out better for getting Marte at-bats. But it’s hard to believe that’s what they have in mind.

I am wondering if the Indians faced a deadline for getting Tyner on the 25-man and decided they’d rather have him as a bench option for the next five months than Michaels as a platoon option.

Well, it can’t be that, because Elarton isn’t on the 40-man, and there’s no more spots.

this is how I feel too. No way this guy gets a coveted 25-man spot for longer than two weeks.
The Disabled List just called ... it was trying to unload Joe Borowski. I offered a bagel but balked at giving up a ham sandwich. It wanted to keep Westbrook.

From the reports in the paper, it sounds as if they really wanted Mastny to pitch, so part of this move is about him - giving him regular work so he would be useful later on. So, whom could they call up instead? Makes little sense to call up Barfield - he hasn’t hit that well at AAA and would likely sit up here anyway. Another pitcher would just be in Mastny’s situation, although I’m a little surprised they didn’t take a flyer on Elarton, since I think he can opt out pretty soon if they don’t call him up. So, if it’s a hitter, it’s really Aubrey (on the 40-man) or “whatever.” I guess they don’t think Aubrey is ready to jump two levels in a couple of weeks, so it’s whatever—Tyner (or Gonzalez) by default. Seems like the pinch-runner/defense argument won out.
This might also give us a hint of what they’ll do when Choo becomes available. If the bullpen works out with only 5 guys, they might try, for a while, to replace Tyner with Choo (in this sense, calling up Tyner, not Gonzalez makes more sense, then, since Gonzalez is insurance at several infield positions—if they have to DFA the guy they call up, they may prefer to lose Tyner).
If Jay’s right about the deadline, then it’s possible they’re really serious about keeping him around all year. But, if not, I think this move actually says the opposite—that they’re perfectly happy to dump Tyner when Choo comes back and/or when they find they need additional pitching help and have to call someone up.

The bullpen is down to six guys, not five — Betancourt, Perez, Masa, Stomp, Breslow and Julio.
I agree that Tyner becomes essentially a placeholder for Choo (or Borowski), and your logic that they prefer to have to DFA Tyner rather than Gonzalez also makes sense.
For whatever hope they may be holding out for Aubrey, clearly Triple-A is the place for him for now.

Yes, it’s six. Hard to count those invisible guys, I guess.
I saw a reference in the San Diego paper to an impending trade for a reliever by the Padres. I wondered if the Indians might be the partner—do you think San Diego would want Elarton? It doesn’t seem that the Indians have any real plans for calling him up.

Ignore the San Diego trade thing. The Padres traded with the Red Sox for Brian Corey (?) for PTBNL/cash. Am I right that Elarton can opt out if he’s not called up in the next little while, or am I imagining that? I thought I read that somewhere, but can’t find it.

I think if it was solely about JoBo, they could have waited until JoBo is activated to send Mastny down. This now creates a situation where someone must leave the island upon JoBo’s return. Either Tyner’s contract has a deadline or someone else is leaving or both.

True, however, if it were only about Mastny, don’t you think we would have called up a player who can be sent back down when JoBo is ready to activate? That is unless you think we are keeping Tyner and DFAing someobody else.

This goes to peter m’s point above, i.e., that Tyner has been promoted precisely because we’re less concerned about losing him than Andy Gonzalez.

Most boring call-up ever. Our starters have been too good, our pen is fine, with Carroll, Marte, Francisco, Shoppach we’ve got our positions covered. Never has the 25 spot been less necessary. I think we should have signed Canseco for two weeks, just for the stories from the bench.

More speculation- but it seems like we’ll need Sowers or another starter sometime this week (Friday?) with the doubleheader today. Someone is getting sent down or DFA. With Francisco playing really well, it has to be Tyner, doesn’t it?

Yeah, there doesn’t seem to be a better way to play it. The Indians only have a handful of option-able players on the 25-man now — aside from absurd choices (Sizemore, Carmona, Peralta, Betancourt), it’s basically down to Cisco, AbaCab, Perez, Lewis, Garko and Laffey. And of course, anybody they send down can’t be recalled for ten days.
I guess this would be an interesting moment to option AbaCab or Lewis, who both have three remaining option years, but either move would leave the team shorthanded. I think the Indians would strongly optioning Perez, whose one remaining option should be saved for a potential future moment when he badly needs a minor league tune-up. This is already an option year for Cisco and Laffey, so those are cost-free in a sense, and Garko has two options left, in case anybody was curious.
Anyway, much detail about nothing … it’ll be Laffey, and Sowers gets at least the next two starts to demonstrate that he’s just as good.
