If he wasn’t pitching for Boston these last two years, he’d have been an overpriced, fungible bullpen arm.
And don’t give me this “versatility” crap. Every failed started would take the ball, work in middle relief, and make spot starts when necessary. And do so without posting an ERA lower than 4. Scott Elarton can do what Julian has done the last three years, and it’s not costing $3.5M per season.
Between 2006-2008: 246IP, 279H, 104BB/136K ratio, 4.94ERA. And he’s about to be 35 years old. If Colorado offers anything of value for him, Colorado is a joke.

Actually, Elarton was making $4 million per season, and his ERA was over 7.

Some say Colorado’s still interested, some say they’re not, but everyone agrees he’ll come cheap. You’re right that Tavarez is a spare part at this point. Elarton has even worse numbers the past couple of years, but he’s a bit younger and hasn’t pitched badly this year at Buffalo. Neither is likely to be a difference maker.
