This Blue Jays lineup is amazing. Outside of Hill and Rios, its pretty much the lineup for the fictional 2008 expansion Portland Pioneers.

I’ll take it. Seriously, bring Portland baseball. Damned Florida teams will probably make the playoffs just to spite us.

So today’s doubleheader is kind of big, yeah? Chance to go 2 games above .500 and possibly into first place, or fall 2 games below .500 and fall 2.5 games out of first…

by APV on May 12, 2008 3:31 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

So I guess we see Peralta, Gutierrez and Marte in game 2? Or - gasp - Jason Tyner?

by peter m on May 12, 2008 3:33 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

if we see Tyner, he better be wielding a pie…

by APV on May 12, 2008 3:34 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   1 recs

I propose that “Gasp – Jason Tyner” should be used every time we refer to him on this site for the next week or so while he is with the team.

Game 1 is big…the lineup for game two will most likely be…

CF – Grady Sizemore
LF – David Dellucci/Ben Francisco/Jason Tyner
RF – Franklin Guitierrez
3B – Andy Marte
SS – Jhonny Peralta
2B – Jamey Carroll/Asdrubal Cabrera
1B – Ryan Garko/Casey Blake/Victor Martinez
C – Kelly Shoppach
DH – Travis Hafner/extra 1B

Basically, 4 positions up for grabs…

Thoughts?

by Tribe Alive on May 12, 2008 3:35 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Marcum’s a righty, so it’s got to be Dellucci. And we’ll see Marte, and Peralta/Cabrera. And then I would think Travis sits for Victor.

I’m starting to get nervous about Cabrera at short…..no matter how much Peralta struggles he’s one of our best hitters and a really good power threat. I hate to see him lose playing time.

by NickFantana on May 12, 2008 3:42 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don’t think they’re going to replace Peralta at short any time soon. He’s been hitting poorly of late (although he had a good series in NY) so they’re resting him a bit. Plus, it’s a doubleheader, and Carmona is an extreme ground ball pitcher, so it makes sense to play Cabrera at short in this game rather than the second one.

by peter m on May 12, 2008 3:45 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Should have clarified irrationally nervous…..I just like home runs too damn much.

Peralta’s best defensive skill is his arm strength (his one defensive skill unquestionably above average). That skill gets wasted on the right side of the infield.

But I’m not buying it. Arm strength (with more of a short-arm motion, I’ll grant you) is what a 2b needs to turn the double play. That and quick feet carried Mazeroski to the H of F.

None of this makes sense. Who’d play 2B? If someone suggested Jhonny at 2B, that might fly (I think Jay has been pushing that, mildly). But, I think our infield defense is actually adequate, at worst, at the moment. It’s the hitting that’s awful (from all of the infielders, in varying degrees).

I’m no Joe Inglett apologist – okay, maybe I am – but he was pretty damn good as an Indians minor leaguer. He was never a real prospect, but the guy was an OBP machine who could play passably everywhere but pitcher and catcher.

Of course, there’s a difference between being a good minor league utilityman and a player that can help an MLB team. But as a minor leaguer, Inglett was rock solid.

I seem to recall that I read that somewhere, yeah. Maybe not, though.

Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.

Hawai’i has a new coach this year; June Jones is gone to SMU.

Brennan will wind up starting after getting some experience sitting for a little whhile. And you can hold me to that.

The Disabled List just called ... it was trying to unload Joe Borowski. I offered a bagel but balked at giving up a ham sandwich. It wanted to keep Westbrook.

Underwood hangs with Inglett and Johnny Mac in the offseason? Man, Westlake is like the epicenter of mediocrity in the Winter.

Does Larry get a windfall from the Newsday purchase? Maybe we can re-sign CC with that

3 outs. Pitch count starting to rise, though.

65 pitches through 5? I’ll take this every time.

Seriously, 13 pitches/inning is not bad at all.

Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.

True. I just meant he wasn’t going to pitch a complete game at this point.

was that a spectacular play by BenFran, or a “why’d he make it that hard?” play?

by aufrank on May 12, 2008 5:17 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

tw’eener. pulled by wilkerson, slicing away, with top-spin. not an all-out dive. probably should have just kept running.

Somewhere in between. He did what he had to to make the play on a ball tailing towards the corner. Not sure I’d call it “spectacular,” though.

This makes me so sad.

Due Up: T. Hafner (.213, 0-for-1), R. Garko (.237, 0-for-1), A. Cabrera (.192, 0-for-1)

Game is half over and we have yet to even look like we are interested in making Burnett work … one baserunner .. .and 5 Ks. At least Toronot has had 6 baserunners.

Three walks, an infield single, and a bloop hit. One hard hit ball (Stairs’ single) that found a hole.

Burnett’s pitch count is pretty similar to Carmona’s, though (despite the walks). Neither team is channelling the Red Sox, let’s put it that way.

We have absolutely torched Burnett every other time he’s appeared in Cleveland. Sad.

My bachelor party was during that game. I watched baseball…everyone else partied. And then I bitched out my best man for scheduling a bachelor party during something as important as an Indians playoff game.

I had my best plan plan my bach party around an Indians game (of course it wasn’t the playoffs). Started drinking at 11AM for a 1PM day game, partied unit 2AM .. .great day.
