This Blue Jays lineup is amazing. Outside of Hill and Rios, its pretty much the lineup for the fictional 2008 expansion Portland Pioneers.

I’ll take it. Seriously, bring Portland baseball. Damned Florida teams will probably make the playoffs just to spite us.

So today’s doubleheader is kind of big, yeah? Chance to go 2 games above .500 and possibly into first place, or fall 2 games below .500 and fall 2.5 games out of first…

So I guess we see Peralta, Gutierrez and Marte in game 2? Or - gasp - Jason Tyner?

I propose that “Gasp – Jason Tyner” should be used every time we refer to him on this site for the next week or so while he is with the team.

Game 1 is big…the lineup for game two will most likely be…

CF – Grady Sizemore
LF – David Dellucci/Ben Francisco/Jason Tyner
RF – Franklin Guitierrez
3B – Andy Marte
SS – Jhonny Peralta
2B – Jamey Carroll/Asdrubal Cabrera
1B – Ryan Garko/Casey Blake/Victor Martinez
C – Kelly Shoppach
DH – Travis Hafner/extra 1B

Basically, 4 positions up for grabs…

Thoughts?

by Tribe Alive on May 12, 2008 3:35 PM EDT reply actions

Marcum’s a righty, so it’s got to be Dellucci. And we’ll see Marte, and Peralta/Cabrera. And then I would think Travis sits for Victor.

I’m starting to get nervous about Cabrera at short…..no matter how much Peralta struggles he’s one of our best hitters and a really good power threat. I hate to see him lose playing time.

by NickFantana on May 12, 2008 3:42 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t think they’re going to replace Peralta at short any time soon. He’s been hitting poorly of late (although he had a good series in NY) so they’re resting him a bit. Plus, it’s a doubleheader, and Carmona is an extreme ground ball pitcher, so it makes sense to play Cabrera at short in this game rather than the second one.

Peralta’s best defensive skill is his arm strength (his one defensive skill unquestionably above average). That skill gets wasted on the right side of the infield.

by Roger Dorn on May 12, 2008 4:32 PM EDT up reply actions

None of this makes sense. Who’d play 2B? If someone suggested Jhonny at 2B, that might fly (I think Jay has been pushing that, mildly). But, I think our infield defense is actually adequate, at worst, at the moment. It’s the hitting that’s awful (from all of the infielders, in varying degrees).

I’m no Joe Inglett apologist – okay, maybe I am – but he was pretty damn good as an Indians minor leaguer. He was never a real prospect, but the guy was an OBP machine who could play passably everywhere but pitcher and catcher.

Of course, there’s a difference between being a good minor league utilityman and a player that can help an MLB team. But as a minor leaguer, Inglett was rock solid.

I’m posing this question, for those who have been to Wrigley Field -

I was at the game yesterday and argued with my friend that you could easily hit the manual scoreboard with a throw from center field.

Google Earth has the distance from CF to scoreboard at 150 feet. Scoreboard is probably 50 feet off the ground.

As a reference point, the distance between home plate and 2nd base is 127 feet.

So do you think it’s easy (my opinion) or impossible (my friends opinion) to hit the scoreboard?

Rick Ankiel could do it.

I think of gamethreads as “life threads.” Whatever’s going on, thats what I’m going to talk about. This band just came on my player.

by afh4 on May 12, 2008 5:49 PM EDT up reply actions

DeVotchKa is a four piece multi-instrumental and vocal ensemble that fuses Romani, Greek, Slavic, Bolero, Mariachi (and many more styles) music with American punk and folk roots. They take their name from Anthony Burgess’ Nadsat word for “young girl,” which is itself derived from the Russian word (девочка) of the same meaning. Based in Denver, Colorado, the quartet is made up of Nick Urata, who sings and plays theremin, guitar, bouzouki, piano, and trumpet; Tom Hagerman, who plays violin, accordion, and piano; Jeanie Schroder, who sings and plays sousaphone and double bass; and Shawn King, who plays percussion and trumpet.

Originally a backing band for burlesque shows, in their early years DeVotchKa also toured with fetish model Dita von Teese. Numerous nationwide tours in support of self released records earned the band an underground following. Their song “How It Ends” was featured on the trailer for the film Everything Is Illuminated, introducing the band to a widening audience. Their performance at the 2006 Bonnaroo music festival was considered a breakout event. In between tours, the band was picked by first time film directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris to score Little Miss Sunshine, a 2006 film that would go on to garner four Academy Award nominations. DeVotchKa, along with composer Mychael Danna, composed and performed the majority of the music for the film’s soundtrack and were nominated for a 2006 Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack.

Arcade Fire singer Win Butler suggested to DeVotchka that they cover the Siouxsie and the Banshees song “The Last Beat of My Heart”.

Nice guess, at least.

Wait, so you’re saying that someone might wander onto the web and think “Poor white minority group”

by dgcambridge on May 12, 2008 6:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it’s more the thought that someone might read it & think it’s written by a non-white trying to poke fun at white people instead of white people poking fun at other white people, which I’m about 99% sure it is.

Despite all of my best intentions, I have not, in fact, grown up to be a debaser.

by zempf on May 12, 2008 6:07 PM EDT up reply actions

No. I am made uncomfortable by the a blog by a bunch of white hipsters that could be easily interpreted as written by or representing the views of someone else. Just because white people in cool glasses think they’re hilarious and liberal doesn’t necessarily give them the right to take a POV they don’t have a claim to.

Then again, I’m probably the only one worried about this.

I’m not sure we’ll see Fausto put it together year to year in terms of control, and I’m not sure it will matter. When he does put it together he’ll have years like last year and when he doesn’t he’ll probably live in the high 3’s (where he’ll end up this year if he doesn’t get it worked out).

I think it’s just a product of his stuff. It’s too insane to have good to great control every year.
